How anonymous is my vote?

I'll make this super-simple: how anonymous is your vote in the United States? I'm currently working for a progressive-oriented group that does lot of work with Democratic politicians/figures - but I'm considering voting third-party in this year's presidential election. [more inside]

Voting turnout in different countries

“A citizen of America will cross the ocean to fight for democracy but won't cross the street to vote in a national election” Why is there an apparent apathy of political participation in America, and to extend it a bit, how come voting turn-out is higher in some countries in others even if the countries in comparison are both recognized liberal democracies?

Why was I not allowed to vote my choice?

I thought it was more a less a given right to write in a candidate. I have before. The sample ballot indicated that one could do so. After standing in line 2 hours I see that, nope, I have to vote for whoever is printed on the ticket. everything else, from senator to dog catcher had write-in options. The poll workers, a young and friendly lot, were clueless, God bless em. So, when voting in a presidential election, must one vote for the names printed on the ballot, or not participate at all? I realize a write in vote is a 'throwaway', that's not the question. I am not from SC, but had to vote there this year if that matters which it shouldn't.

What can I do to win the election for my candidate?

To the undecideds, or those who believe they can put themselves in the undecided's shoes: What might persuade you towards a particular candidate, particularly in the form of anything a volunteer might be able to do? Would someone coming to your door help, or hurt? Phone calls? Voter registration campaigns, or offers of rides to the polls? Signs in yards and clever bumper stickers? Blog posts? Emailing everyone I know with video clips and transcripts? What can be done to positively affect your decision in the presidential election? In short, how might I, as a volunteer, most effectively turn you into decided for my candidate. [more inside]

US citizen voting from Australia?

How do Americans vote when they are overseas? I live in Australia and my husband works with a young guy who is a US citizen. He'd like to vote in the upcoming election, but has never voted before and has no idea how to do an absentee vote from overseas. Where do we look to find this info, and has anyone had problems doing this before? Do you need to sort it out ahead of time?

Voting Parties

In Wisconsin, you don't have to declare a party in order to vote in the primary, which has me wondering, since George W. Bush is a lock on the republican side, why don't republicans vote in the democratic party for the person they think is the least likely to win?
