Because my job is a big pile of awesomesauce, I get to help put together an escape room for a one-off event. The theme is ancient Egyptian, and I need some help figuring out to do a couple of the props on the cheap (if possible). [more inside]
I'm off to Cairo in a couple of weeks and would appreciate any tips for looking at the art scene there, from museums and galleries to events and people of interest. I'm no expert but have found post 40's art to be a growing interest of mine.
I would appreciate any help in identifying the man in the white hat inspecting troops (RAF) in Egypt c.1942/3. In other photographs taken on the same day he is seen holding a horsehair fly swat and has a binocular case over his shoulder. He must have been either a visiting Head of State, politician, diplomat or high profile entertainer. Thanks in advance.
Just got back from Hurghada and recorded a snippet of a track in a shop. We asked a local DJ to ID it but he wasn't able to (-it's old, like 2 years - all that stuff sounds the same) so I'm turning to the hive. [more inside]
Ben Carson stated his belief that the Pyramids of Giza were originally used to store grain, rather than royal corpses. I've never heard this hypothesis. Is there any archeological evidence to support this?

I am planning on going to Turkey at the end of November for just shy of two weeks and am looking for a couple of pieces of advice: Is a side trip to Cairo alone for two days a terrible decision? And are there lodgings in Istanbul where it is easy to meet other travelers that don't involve giant dorms and drunken twenty somethings? [more inside]
Recently I watched the comedy "Terrorism and Kebab" (Al-irhab wal kabab) on YouTube and fell in love with Adel Imam's acting. I desperately want to watch "The Terrorist" (El Irhabi) but I can't find it with English subtitles. Where can I find it? (I'd be happy to buy it). Also, I'd love to hear recommendations on other Adel Imam movies (or similar comedy films) that are readily available with subtitles. Thanks!

Help! I need to know what high society Cairo looks like in the 1920s - the sophisticated, opulent, and fashionable - people and settings. More parties and interiors than architecture. It's really important that the references be of Egyptian people, not travelers visiting from abroad bringing their own style with them. But, if it was fashionable for the well-heeled to import furniture and clothing styles from Europe, that's important too. What does a party look like, and how would it differ from a party set in Paris or London? The things that are different are the things that are important. My best resource so far is the Egyptian Royalty pool on Flickr. That and Indiana Jones is all I've got. It's for a painting. Thanks!
I saw a poster showing a photo of a protest in Egypt. This image of an Egyptian flag was featured prominently. Why does it have numbers (0128648788) under the central bird motif? Is it a date? A phone number? The image is probably from an Al Jazeera website. The bird doesn't look quite like the official one, either. Is this the flag of some group other than the Egyptian state/
I'm looking for solid histories of Alexandria (Egypt, not Virginia). Overviews are good, as are works more specifically social, intellectual, military, or economic. I'm particularly interested in ancient and Napoleonic information, but all suggestions are welcome! Web resources are welcome as well as print works; I have access to ILL and an academic library.

My dear Egyptian friend calls me "Yah Soosah" and "Yah Habibti." What does this mean? I'm pretty sure these are terms of endearment, but what do they mean? She said "yah soosah" is an old Egyptian word. Help me figure out the meaning of my new pet names. Thank you!!! : )
Where is the best place in Cairo to purchase spices in bulk, assuming I can't speak Arabic and want a few hundred grams of, say, dukkah, saffron, sumac, anise, za'atar, or ras el hanout? Happy to go to a supermarket or something, but I'm also happy to attempt to bargain! [more inside]

All this revolution stuff is making me curious about this whole middle east and north africa place I hear so much about. So much so I'm half thinking of learning Arabic, or at least trying and failing. Oh God's of Mefi which dialect should I go for? Egypt has apparently "shut down" their Internet. This says that they shut down DNS, which suggests that "shut down the Internet" is a bit of an overstatement and that such a thing might not be possible. Who knows more about how this "shutdown" is working and, more importantly, how can we help these people communicate?
I had been planning a vacation to Egypt this year. The news of protests has me a bit spooked; is it unwise to travel to Egypt this April/May? If so, any suggestions for other international destinations as a good alternative? [more inside]

My girlfriend and I are considering a trip to Egypt this November. The conventional wisdom seems to be that a visitor to Egypt is more likely to be bitten by a camel than be the victim of any violence. Is there any reason for special concern in light of the threatened boycotts of an election for Mubarak's successor or the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, etc.? I just received a job offer, for a senior architect position in a very known contracting firm in Cairo. FYI, I have 8 years of experience as an architect and an M.Arch degree. However, I was shocked to see the figures associated, they are so low, and there are a lot of other concerns about rent fees and work hours, etc.. I will list some of the things below, please advise, if you have worked in Egypt, or familiar with the work law there. [more inside]
