I'm looking for solid histories of Alexandria (Egypt, not Virginia). Overviews are good, as are works more specifically social, intellectual, military, or economic. I'm particularly interested in ancient and Napoleonic information, but all suggestions are welcome! Web resources are welcome as well as print works; I have access to ILL and an academic library.

My dear Egyptian friend calls me "Yah Soosah" and "Yah Habibti." What does this mean? I'm pretty sure these are terms of endearment, but what do they mean? She said "yah soosah" is an old Egyptian word. Help me figure out the meaning of my new pet names. Thank you!!! : )

Where is the best place in Cairo to purchase spices in bulk, assuming I can't speak Arabic and want a few hundred grams of, say, dukkah, saffron, sumac, anise, za'atar, or ras el hanout? Happy to go to a supermarket or something, but I'm also happy to attempt to bargain!

Egypt has apparently "shut down" their Internet.
This says that they shut down DNS, which suggests that "shut down the Internet" is a bit of an overstatement and that such a thing might not be possible.
Who knows more about how this "shutdown" is working and, more importantly, how can we help these people communicate?

My girlfriend and I are considering a trip to Egypt this November. The conventional wisdom seems to be that a visitor to Egypt is more likely to be bitten by a camel than be the victim of any violence. Is there any reason for special concern in light of the threatened boycotts of an election for Mubarak's successor or the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, etc.? We're a white unmarried couple traveling on U.S. passports.

I just received a job offer, for a senior architect position in a very known contracting firm in Cairo. FYI, I have 8 years of experience as an architect and an M.Arch degree.
However, I was shocked to see the figures associated, they are so low, and there are a lot of other concerns about rent fees and work hours, etc.. I will list some of the things below, please advise, if you have worked in Egypt, or familiar with the work law there.

"Obama - The New Tutankahamen of the World" shirts in Egypt?
What's the story here? I saw lots of pictures of shirts, etc, with that on it. I'm kind of curious who would buy a shirt like that? Was it meant for American tourists? What does King Tut mean to the average egyptian (who I'd assume would be Muslim?) I'm interested especially in hearing what native Egyptians or people who spent some time living there think about it. Is "The New Tutenkhaman" a common idiom there like "A new caesar"?

A dear friend of mine desperately wants to improve his life and follow his dreams. I live in a far freer country so I'm unsure of exactly how best to show him support sometimes. I want to tell him not to give up hope and to work hard towards his goals, that it's the only way they'll happen. Sometimes I wonder if maybe I'm just being an overly optimistic American, though. I want to help him in any way I can, but we take for granted the possibilities we have here. Things are far different in his country than in mine and I know that. So I feel a bit useless as support. Insights, please...
