Venting boiler out the side of a building.

I am doing a renovation and I'd prefer to move the boiler to a location where I have to vent horizontally, under a porch that is 7' wide. Do I have boiler options that allow this. I currently understand that a regular boiler must vent straight up. A high efficiency boiler can vent out the side wall. However, I don't know if you can vent a high efficiency boiler out 8' horizontally.

Air Conditioning Efficiency (Coefficient of Performance) Questions

I have come to understand that a typical modern window or residential-central air conditioner (which I believe is referred to in the industry as a "Direct Expansion" or DX unit) has a coefficient of performance which typically ranges between 3.0 and 3.5. That is to say, for every unit of energy consumed, the air conditioner removes between 3 and 3.5 units of heat from the conditioned space. I have a few questions regarding this, inside. [more inside]

Speech recognition software recs for sprawly writing on a Mac

I'm a rambling woman...

Lately I've noticed it takes me a looong time to write emails- with a lot of time spent re-reading, editing, taking words out and putting them back in. I am self-conscious that my first pass is heavy on text - not good for conveying information efficiently to coworkers and supervisors. It's really getting in the way of my ability to be efficient at work and starting to show in my performance. What can I do to work on this? [more inside]

Stock Oversaving?

Settle an argument about making stock for cooking. One half says that you should save every odd and end from vegetables and keep them in a big ziploc bag in the freezer for when you make stock so it can get the most varied amount of flavor possible and "recycle" kitchen waste. Other half says that since we're not making vegetable stock and only ever make stock with left over bones you should just keep to the basic recipie ( carrots, onion, celery, etc) and not introduce all these unknown cauliflower ends and parsnip bits and it's a false economy anyway. Who is right? Is anyone right? Are they both right?

How can I automate my new year's resolutions?

I have a number of goals, not quite new year's resolutions exactly, but the new year is getting me going on implementing them. They include reading more, running more, staying on top of current events, continuing to study French, listening to more new-to-me music, things like that. None of these are measurable or "SMART" goals, and that's the way I want it--I want this stuff to become a habit, not a chore. How can I automate these goals so that they are more likely to just happen? [more inside]

Glass Block or Insulated Replacement Window

So I have been working on my house and making it energy efficient. It is now time to replace the basement windows in my split level. One double wide window needs to be replaced with one that opens to meet code, but the other three single wide windows do not. Would I be better installing glass blocks in those three, not vented, or installing either a picture, slider, or another type of insulated vinyl replacement window? If I should do a replacement window, which type should I use? [more inside]

Space heaters vs turning up the heat?

I live in a drafty old farmhouse. My roommates and I are currently waging a thermostat war--one says it's cheaper to to have the heat for the whole house at 70 than it is for him to heat his room with a space heater. I maintain that its probably way more expensive to heat the entire drafty house. Who's right? We have electric heat. [more inside]

My New Smartphone Seems Less Smart

On my last smartphone, I could push a button, say "Find pizza" and the phone would bring up a map showing all the local pizzerias. Or "Find 300 Commonwealth Avenue" and it would show me a map with my destination and where I was. Now when I say "Find pizza" my phone instead does an internet search for pizza. If it is a more specific command, often the internet search will lead me to an option to find the selected item using Google Maps instead. But it's still a little annoying that I have to choose things with my finger instead of my voice. [more inside]

Solar window treatment options

I have a bunch of thin, old, south- & west-facing windows that need energy-efficiency treatment.
