LifePlansFilter: I’m currently enrolled in graduate school in a masters of secondary education in art program. I enrolled as a way to explore my creativity in studio classes, and also as something to do during unusual life circumstances. Being in this program will continue to be an option for me for a limited time. Should I take the requisite courses I need to complete the program or should I keep taking whatever classes I want and drop out of the program when I leave? Many details within.

After years of mulling about, I've come to realize that I want to to go to university and gain a proper liberal arts education. For the first time in what feels like eons, I feel enthusiastic and motivated. Trouble is, my first attempt at doing so was three years ago and under much different and more trying circumstances. It seems that the consequences of my halfhearted younger self have severely damaged my future possibilities. What can this 21-year-old do to demonstrate his new-found ardor for all pursuits academic?

I was reading a book to my son (
Face to face with Lions from National Geographic) and found a very interesting statement about male lions that our ousted from their Pride.
According to this book, a male lion averages only 3-4 years as a leader of a pride, before a younger lion comes in and kicks out the old guard. The book says that the old pride leader then tends to lose his mane, making him look more feminine, which helps him be able to stick around with his pride, without confusing anyone as to who the real leader is now.

I manage a classroom of about 30 laptops. Because we we have no funding for upgrades it is up to me to keeps these things running. Everything my students do is web based, so a bootable CD running some form of kiosk type OS that serves up only a browser seems like a perfect choice. Can someone recommend a solution or even suggest another way to manage the lab?

I have a friend in his mid 20s who has, I would guess, a 9th-grade literacy level. I'd like to help him bring that up a bit, so he is more successful in school (he just started at a community college taking business classes). I don't know where to begin! There's soooo much information on the net, I'm having a hard time processing it. Can you suggest a good place to start?

I am going to be teaching a short course on "Teaching and Presenting in English" to some Spanish postgraduate students (in Spain). They will be going on in the future to present at international conferences or maybe teaching in English speaking universities.
Please help me hive-mind... especially those of you who have taught/presented/been taught/presented at in a second language. What do you wish you had known beforehand? What advice would you give someone about to present in English? Is there anything an English speaking audience would expect that, say, a Spanish speaking audience wouldn't?

Boy brought home this ancient science book from the school library. I mean, so ancient that it was just flat out false. (It was about global warming, and had been written in the 80's and 90's. It was hopelessly out of date.)
When I talked to the librarian about it, she said that they had almost no books newer than 10 years old, and that more than half the collection was over 25 years old. It is one of the oldest library collection in North Texas schools.

I am working on a piece of writing set in a women's college. Having never attended a single-sex institution myself, I'm curious about the little ways in which day-to-day life might be different. . . . standards of grooming, dress, delicacy or lack thereof in conversations about sex/bodily functions, competitiveness in the classroom, etc. I am sure there are a lot of facets I haven't considered. If you've attended a single-sex institution, or know a lot about the experience, can you help me in my research?

I've been given a mythology class to teach, mostly to juniors and seniors (at a public high school in California). Yay! However, the previous teacher won't let me borrow her material, and my mythological education was taking one class in college and a lot self-teaching (thus, there are gaping holes in my knowledge). And so, mefites, hope me figure out the best way to teach this class!
