How to share a short clip from a DVD with others.

How can I get a short clip from a DVD and save it to use in the classroom? Say I was teaching a lesson and a film had a short clip that was perfect at demonstrating something or at getting a point across and I wanted to save it and let other teachers use it in their lessons what would I have to do? Obviously I would look to getting the right clearance in terms of copyright - but how would I do this? Is there a really quick and easy way? Thanking you.

How hard to become adjunct teacher of philosophy?

My formal educational background/profession is in a different area, but I would be interested in teaching a seminar on spirituality, comparative religion, and philosophy at a university. I've studied these areas informally. Anyway, I want it to be mostly a participatory, discussion-oriented class, not one where I pass down my knowledge from on high. How hard would this be to do and how should I go about doing it -- esp. at a well-known university like, say, NYU? I don't need much if any compensation.

Savings plan for primary school?

My child will be switching to a very expensive private elementary school. I have already prepaid the tuition for next year, but what is my best strategy to pay for the following years? Specifically, what is the best way to invest about $2K/month so that I can withdraw the needed lump sum once a year? 529 plans are for college expenses only, and Coverdell education-savings account maxes out at $2k/year.

Extra Culture

I am looking for information about a program I heard about on NPR, years ago. It is something like this: a gentleman in NYC (I think it was Harlem) started a special school for high school drop outs. The school focused on learning about culture (art, music, literature, etc) rather than the typical reading, writing, arithmetic model. The graduates had a much higher rate of getting out of the cycle of poverty than the traditional school system. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Help me pick a path

LifeFilter: Now What? Sometimes great ideas come from unexpected sources. MeFi, I'm looking at you. So, this is my dilemma: I was not accepted to OHSU's Accelerated Bachelor of Science to Masters Program to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and while I am disappointed, I'm taking that as indication that maybe the traditional medical model approach to mental health is not the right path for me. I am very interested in psychology, sociology, social justice, mental health, human rights... I've considered naturopathic medicine, graduate school (psychology, interdisciplinary...), and giving up. Math for pre-schoolers

My cousin's four year old son is obsessed with things like quarks and infinity. He insists to his mother that infinity is the last number. She isn't so sure, and wants to know more about things like strangeness. I don't want to determine this kid's future, but it seems fun to feed his curiosity. And since my wife's babysitter was Murray Gell-Mann, the responsibility has fallen partially on my shoulders to help answer his questions. What kinds of information can you recommend that I give to his mother so that she, an attorney and not a mathematician, and her son can learn more about this information. In particular, what kinds of books, games, and projects would introduce him to other neat ideas in mathematics and physics?
