I tried to find a source from the claim made on Reddit below. Is it currently illegal, or at least being discussed, that it is illegal to charge university students for online quizzing that factors into their final grade? [more inside]

Grad school application question help: Does this answer seem odd?

I am currently in the process of applying to The University of the Pacific's Master of Arts in Intercultural Relations. To answer one of the application questions I used part of a previous paper I wrote a few years back which I think answers the question well. I did cut and paste it with a few revisions and have been told it appears that way. A few other questions about it inside. [more inside]

What is the basic cultural literacy and knowledge a post-collegiate adult "should" have in 2014? Familiarity with a bunch of poetry, drama, novels, sociological texts, art, music? None of that? [more inside]

Help me find this oneoff comic about college/grad school w/superpowers

Has anyone heard of a degree in "strategic intelligence"?

So I've now had two young people in the last month ask me for career advice who told me they were planning to major in "strategic intelligence." Has anyone heard of such a thing? I hadn't, and had to look it up. From what I can gather it seems to be basically a hybrid history/poli-sci degree. Is that accurate? And more than that, is such a degree worth the paper it's printed on? [more inside]

Goes by several names: Master of Studies in Law, Master of Legal Studies, Master of Science in Law. How to decide between 2 Grad Programs: Chicago vs Boston

Hey All, I would love some advice. I am not sure what to do. So I am going to grad school in health policy. Option A is to attend a University in Boston. I have applied and been accepted. Now Boston is twice as expensive as the local university in Chicago. However, I plan to apply for a scholarship to attend Boston. I will not find out if I am awarded this scholarship until the summer. If I am a recipient of the scholarship it comes with a 50% tuition waiver. One of the benefits of the scholarship is that there is a leadership development component and you are assigned a mentor, who is a leader in the field, in the Boston area. To apply for the scholarship, I have to commit and accept the offer to attend the school. However, if I do not get the scholarship, I would financially not be able to attend the school. So you might be able to see where this is going. On the one hand, I would like to start looking for housing and a roommate in Boston (I understand cost of living is much higher than Chicago, so I am a little freaked about that) right now, but how can I do this if I do not know if I will be attending the program? Would you teach a really old but really good textbook?

I've already taught this college course on media literacy for one semester, with results that frustrated me (here's my postmortem of my syllabus, including what students did and didn't get). Specifically, my students don't seem to understand how advertising influences the content of the media. I've been trying to remember where it was I developed the foundational ideas I have on the subject... and I realized, they're in a textbook I read in high school. In 1991. In a book which had its last edition that year. [more inside]
