I need a software recommendation. A small group of people want to be able to edit a document and receive email or RSS notification when one of the other members has edited the document. Further reqs: only one person can edit at a time, so some kind of check in/out feature would be good. We'd also like to be able to export easily to a printable format at the end.

Digital video workflow question: I'm editing a greenscreened music video, and wish to do a rough cut in Final Cut, then move the project into After Effects to do compositing. However, the only automated means of conversion the project is Automatic Duck's plugin, the price of which exceeds my budget. What's the best workflow for moving a sequence between the two applications under these conditions?

A co-worker of mine is the librarian at the publishing house where I work. She found some librarian "career girl" novels on the net and showed them to me for a laugh. I suggested she take a cover image to a T-shirt shop and have a shirt made. She loved the idea and is going to do it
with this image, and put the hilarious excerpt from the book on the back. Now I'm jealous and want a similar shirt that relates to my job. I'm an editor. I doubt they had "career girl" pulp novels about editing back in the day, so what equally cool/kitschy images could I put on my front that relate to editing?

I'm in need of expert video equipment and editing software recommendations. I need to purchase a videocam primarily for recording tutorials. 50% of the shooting will be in an office setup focused mainly on the speaker sitting at a desk, 50% will be in a shop filming welding type machinery.

I'm interested in becoming certified by the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences. Their
Web site is rather cryptic: apparently they only send you the particulars of what the exam entails once you have applied to take it. Has anyone taken this exam or known someone who has? What's it like? Moreover, do you have a sense of how professionally useful the certification is at all?

Can you think of any examples of "disjointed" writing -- writing with abrupt transitions -- that works? Faulkners Sound and Fury is a good example but shorter pieces are better for my purposes. Can be fiction or non-fiction.

I'm applying for a part-time copy editing position at a local paper. They're asking for ten work samples, but the thing is, I haven't really done anything professionally. Even better, I don't have all that much experience in journalism. (A little bit of work with the high school paper is it.) What can I do to overcome my lack of experience and get this job?

Aside from price, are there any other reasons why I should not buy a Mac Mini for video editing? I want to learn how to edit video and maybe put together some short films. I can spend $1000-$1300. I've heard the defacto standard is Final Cut Pro. I probably don't need that immediately but if it's the standard i'd like to work up to it. I have two old PCs but no Mac experience.
