Despite being a great fan of Connie Willis, I had to give up on Blackout/All Clear
when I was barely a hundred pages into All Clear
because it had been such a meandering, repetitive read. (Others
have been able to finish it, but share my frustration). Two brief, related questions: 1) Can someone please summarize what happened in the rest of the book? (Yes, SPOILERS!) and 2) What the hell is happening to Willis' editors, given that her novels have been getting more lengthy and repetitive? The Doomsday Book
(1993) was perfectly sized for its story. Bellwether
(1997) was a little repetitive, but it was relatively short and funny, and I enjoyed it overall. Her 2002 novel Passage
, although a satisfying book in the end, was a maze of twisty little passages, all alike, for the first chunk as well. And then she delivered bouncing baby Buicks in the form of Blackout/All Clear
this past year. Why? [more inside]

I am looking for an app for my iPad that allows me to save word documents from the Internet, open them and edit them preferably with a handwriting ability, on the iPad without having to filter them through googledocs or convert them to PDFs. I am basically looking to eliminate having to go through another normal computer from the process so that I can download, view and edit my class note outlines right in class on my iPad. Any app suggestions? I am willing to invest a bit of money in an app if it does what I want.

This is a Final Cut question:
I would like to show an image with a video inside it. More specifically, so the question is clear, I would like to show (in my video) a fake website that has an embedded video. So, "the website" will be a still image, but there is video within it. I hope that's clear. Would really appreciate any help!

I have a friend who has asked me for help editing a Wikipedia entry. Well... not so much editing as a complete re-write. He is probably the foremost expert on the topic, which is fairly obscure. It's been years since I participated in Wikipedia, and I am not sure of the current culture and best practices. [more inside]

After searching and coming up empty, does anyone know the best method and software for editing video into a four way split screen?
I admit I am just starting to get my feet wet to editing so if it will be tricky thanks for the pre warning.
Could it be done in Premiere Pro 5? Also might have access to Final Cut Pro if it calls for it.

Back in the '90s there used to be a "music video" style recording mode on Sony camcorders that created a low frame-rate, slightly blurred or dreamy look - perhaps something to do with using fewer frames per second and blending the intermediary frames. Does anyone remember this and know how to recreate that look in post-production, e.g. using final cut pro, etc.?

Currently using VideoPad (on Vista) which keeps outputting video with out-of-sync audio. Suggested software should work on Vista or Windows 7. Any ideas? (besides Movie Maker)

Help Me Be A Good Web Editor! Please? Hi! The media outlet where I work has recently started a news web site, and I'm the editor. I have a vague idea of what I'm doing, but the actual copyediting-type-stuff I've been doing to AP print standards. I don't have a specific question, but generally, I'd really like to get some of the "official" basics of web editing down. I looked on mediabistro and they don't seem to have a class for this, and I looked on Amazon but I'm not sure about those books. Any suggestions for resources? I'd love either a class or a book that's as useful as the AP Guide, but for print. Your thoughts, hivemind?

I have several lengthy documents I'm editing for a book. The author scanned his hard copy and ran the result through an OCR program. The OCR omitted most of the periods. Is there a way to make Microsoft Word 2000 or OpenOffice Writer 3 put the periods where they go, or am I doomed to putting them in as I edit?
