MS Word: chapters and subheadings

Microsoft Word with chapters and numbered subsections: I was a good boy and wrote my dissertation draft with well-organized hierarchical headings. Now that I am going back to fine-tune the format, the numbering has gone completely haywire, the spacing is off, and I am literally pulling out my hair trying to fix it. I don't even know where to look for help. [more inside]

Any Microsoft Word wizards interested in helping out with a little find/replace question?

Any Microsoft Word wizards interested in helping out with a little find/replace question? I have a document with hundreds of lines of text that begin like this: "101 0 Music player..... 102 0 The interim... 103 0 Beneath the..." I need to keep the first group of digits but remove that 0, so that the result looks like this: "101 Music player..... 102 The interim... 103 Beneath the..." One added dimension: that second digit is not always a 0; sometimes it's another digit. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Help me prepare for a possible job switch when I don't know where I'll be living.

My s.o. is applying for a medical residency in the US. We'll know where we're going to be placed in mid-March and chances are good that we'll end up in Baltimore, New Haven or Providence. I work in a field with very limited options in these three places and I'm wondering what I can do over the next few months, if anything, to prepare in case I have to move and get a new job. A good opening and a good ending make for a good film provide they come close together. Federico Fellini, [Recipe for a Good Film], a Fellini Lexicon, (1992)

When did certain film makers/producers start placing the title of the film at the very end of their film? I've noticed this tends to happen with independant/art-house style films? The film just begins and at the very end of the movie, the screen will flash the title of the film and then the credits will roll. Does someone know who started this?

Hey, it's the new Connie Willis novel -- get the forklift!

Despite being a great fan of Connie Willis, I had to give up on Blackout/All Clear when I was barely a hundred pages into All Clear because it had been such a meandering, repetitive read. (Others have been able to finish it, but share my frustration). Two brief, related questions: 1) Can someone please summarize what happened in the rest of the book? (Yes, SPOILERS!) and 2) What the hell is happening to Willis' editors, given that her novels have been getting more lengthy and repetitive? The Doomsday Book (1993) was perfectly sized for its story. Bellwether (1997) was a little repetitive, but it was relatively short and funny, and I enjoyed it overall. Her 2002 novel Passage, although a satisfying book in the end, was a maze of twisty little passages, all alike, for the first chunk as well. And then she delivered bouncing baby Buicks in the form of Blackout/All Clear this past year. Why? [more inside]

Best apps for saving and editing word docs on iPad?

I am looking for an app for my iPad that allows me to save word documents from the Internet, open them and edit them preferably with a handwriting ability, on the iPad without having to filter them through googledocs or convert them to PDFs. I am basically looking to eliminate having to go through another normal computer from the process so that I can download, view and edit my class note outlines right in class on my iPad. Any app suggestions? I am willing to invest a bit of money in an app if it does what I want.
