Authors Of AskMe, has this happened to you? During my self-imposed creative hiatus over the last year or so I conducted a lot of research into what would be my dream project. A project I could be passionate about, the kind of book I'd really want to exist. So I made a list of every thing, character, concept, idea, sudden kind of twist I'd like. I have three notebooks of this stuff. I cross-indexed it and included all my references. I have an astounding about of detail on what I want to put in and touch on but no actual story. I keep staring at it, like it's a list of SCP entries, and I can't think of a damn thing for anyone to do with these collected items, places, motifs, themes, and people. It's frustrating cause I can come up with quick pulp narratives on the fly for stuff I'm not working as hard on but every attempt to break and outline a rising action for these people results in rapid breathing and complete brain fume-lock. I keep asking "What does the main character want?" and coming up with nothing. Is this common? Is there a resource for this? Can I pay someone to go through these ideas and find something that other people might want to read? [more inside]
I'd like to donate some of my time to a charitable organization. The skill I have to offer is copywriting and editing. I can, obviously, do this remotely so the organization could be located anywhere in the world. What's the best way to locate organizations that might be interested in free writing and editing? Is this even a thing?
I wrote a novel (hooray!). I got an agent (hooray!) The book went out to lots of great publishers (hooray!) who all rejected it (tears, sobbing, and gnashing of teeth). And now I'm flailing. Can you help me get my head straight and figure out a plan? [more inside]
I am an English PhD who now works as a researcher in the private sector. For some time now I have been editing things (for free) for friends and family members. What do I need to know and do if I want to make a few bucks here and there doing this for others? [more inside]
Hi everyone. You may or may not have seen this popular "vine," called Turning Juice Into Candy. Here are a few more short clips by the same guy, using the same method: Time Change, Throwing Things Through Computers, Making Real Goldfish. I'm basically familiar with video editing software (I assume these were edited with Final Cut Pro or After Effects), but I can't quite figure out how the guy did this. He obviously filmed each shot twice (at least) and blended them together somehow, but the camera *seems* to be both moving and handheld in each shot, which *should* make the shots "unmatchable." But even when I slow them down and watch them frame-by-frame, the match seems exact and I can't figure out precisely how he did it. Can anyone who's familiar with video editing explain this? Thanks!
My sister's birthday is coming up and I want to ask her friends and other family to send me short videos of them saying happy birthday or whatever for me to compile into one full video to present to her on her birthday. What is the EASIEST way to go about this that a techophobe can handle? [more inside]

I (project manager) work together with my wife (film editor) in a shared office. I like music while I work and she doesn't. One of us needs to be able to hear and respond to the real world, while the other needs not know it even exists. What headphones would be best placed to provide a high level of audio isolation, given the nature of sound in film editing (sometimes quiet), be comfortable for long periods and have a good audio range?
I have two Sony Digital Handycams, each one has Firewire / iLink DV output. It strikes me that I could get a big 2x6 piece of wood and mount both cameras onto it, and record on both simultaneously and from two different eye viewpoints. [more inside]
I have previous tutoring experience (as well as being an Ontario Certified Teacher). I'd like to get back into some tutoring/editing work on the side, but I'm not sure how to charge for what I'm hoping to do. I don't really have the time or the flexibility to offer one-on-one tutoring, so I was hoping to offer "editing online" types of services where someone would email me their work and I'd send it back in x amount of time with corrections, editing suggestions, etc. I've done this in the past for journalists, law students, etc. and it seemed to work well. Here's the problem: how do I set up a reasonable and attractive fee structure for this? [more inside]
O hai! I'm a Google avoider. I've managed to not use Gmail, and to stop using Google as a search engine. I do have a Google account, but I use a separate browser to log into that, and log out and close the browser when I'm done. My online Google-avoiding life would be complete if only I could find a good replacement for Googledocs, preferrably free. [more inside]

When I edit a document in Word 2010, I use Track Changes and insert comments (using balloons to call them out). 90% of the time, authors and I work back and forth without having to print these documents, but occasionally, printing them with the comments visible (i.e., with the balloons appearing in the right margin) is necessary. This has never been a problem. UNTIL NOW. [more inside]
I've been writing short fiction. I've got my process down pretty well, to the point that I am not getting stuck in writer's block hell or any other common pitfalls. I have ideas, and I'm capable of getting them down on paper. I revise them, I produce new drafts, etc. My problem comes in the last phase of the process. I don't know when to say something is done. I applied for a job in my field recently at company B and just noticed that I left in a sentence from a previous application in my cover letter that mentions the name of the company I'd previously applied to (company A). Whoops. I'm in a fairly small field and company A is one that people have mixed feelings about mainly because they have lots and lots of money and publicity. Should I drop the company I'm currently applying to an email acknowledging my error or not? If I do, any suggestions on how to phrase it other than "I'm an idiot, please forgive me.) [more inside]
It's been almost 10 years since I last changed jobs and it's also been that long since I've written a resume. I'd like to get some (hopefully) expert opinion and editing to bring my resume up to date, both to reflect the skills/experience I've gained and ensure that it is in a format that will be acceptable to recruiters/companies. Has anyone used a resume service recently that you've been pleased with? (I'm located in the NYC metro area if that makes a difference).

I need to copy text between a commercial text editor (TextPad 6.1.3 by Helios) and a home brew program used by my company. I'm using PowerDirector 11 to make a fan edit of a movie on DVD (not for anyone else, just for myself). The first few VOB files were a dream to work with, no problems whatsoever. However, when I added the third VOB file it's only playing the DVD's commentary audio, not the actual film audio. Is there some clip setting in PowerDirector to change that? Many thanks!
Editorial Manuscript Evaluation. What does it cost? How do you find a good match? Any advice for getting value out of the service? I'm looking for a professional that can help me turn a thoroughly polished and "good as I can get it" novel length draft into something publishable. I'd love advice, because I don't want to waste my time or money on this, and I really do want it to work out. Help? Thanks!
I use WordStarter 2010. I'm editing footnotes in a manuscript for a client, and have discovered to my great dismay that WordStarter 2010 doesn't have footnotes enabled — I can change the wording in existing notes, or delete them, but not add new ones or renumber existing ones. Does anyone have any suggestions for a work around that won't involve my having to buy Microsoft Office?

During the past year, I have inadvertently become a freelance editor. I was wondering if any of you have some advice for me about getting disability and extended health insurance (I live in Toronto, Canada so I basically just need to worry about "extras" like dental and vision care, medications, etc.), and if you've got any other tips for me about finding work/promoting myself and managing what is in effect my own business. I've been working as an (in-house) editor for over 18 years, so I'm looking for advice on a more esoteric level than "set up a work schedule and stick to it" and "keep the receipts for your Post-its, because you can claim them at tax time".
