I'm an experienced editor (of all sorts) and writer (primarily journalism but also have had short gigs writing copy for social media and for a mobil app interface). Long ago I analysed a client's website to see if it was user-friendly or hostile. I'm really good at understanding customer perspectives and advocating for users. Also, I'm an old. How might I go about getting such a job? And would such a job, in the Bay Area, be lucrative? [more inside]
I watched this Clinton ad today that used footage from James Comey's testimony to Congress yesterday. How long did this take to make? There aren't many edits, or anything, but it's professionally put together and very concisely argued. I'm just curious, from conception to completion, how many person hours would something like this take?
Curious to know if there exists a film in which two songs (ideally not score material) are essentially mixed as though they were selected by a DJ. One or both of the music sources can be visible on screen (band, radio, etc.), but stuff like a live band segue or DJ set doesn't really qualify as what I'm looking for. Or maybe this is super common, and I just never realized it?
I know somewhere in the past I had seen a story about the devices/programs used to create video logos like the DIC outro seen here. Any idea what it was?

Hi everyone! Not looking to copy or plagiarize - but I am just getting ready to launch a YouTube channel and I don't know what software I'm going to use to edit videos or much about how to get going. I really like the type of introductions used by YouTuber Marzia. Do you know what tools she uses to make them? More in post. [more inside]
I'm returning to freelance copyediting after 10 years on the writing side of nonprofit operations. Educational, business and technical content interest me the most, and that’s where I want to start (I also enjoy research, but how to fit that in?). Can the hive mind help steer me in the right direction? Another challenge: I must do it remotely. Where do I start? [more inside]

I'm trying to e-mail a couple of .mp4 videos to my girlfriend's LG G3 Android phone. The first one worked fine, but both of my attempts of the second video are apparently an "unsupported file type." I encoded the videos myself from QuickTime .mov source videos using Avidemux, and I'm at a loss as to why one works but the others don't. (technical info inside) [more inside]
I stumbled my way into an associate editor position a year ago with no previous media experience, and have now been promoted to managing editor at the site. I'm successfully doing the job, but I constantly run into places where I wish I knew how "proper" newsrooms handled things. How do I learn? [more inside]
I'm trying to make a 24x36" poster from some Excel tables. They're somewhat complex -- half-finished example here (Flickr link). I exported PDFs from Excel and used Inkscape to arrange them. But Inkscape can't handle this much stuff at one time without becoming unusably slow. How can I arrange the layout while keeping everything vector? [more inside]

I (project manager) work together with my wife (film editor) in a shared office. I like music while I work and she doesn't. One of us needs to be able to hear and respond to the real world, while the other needs not know it even exists. What headphones would be best placed to provide a high level of audio isolation, given the nature of sound in film editing (sometimes quiet), be comfortable for long periods and have a good audio range?
O hai! I'm a Google avoider. I've managed to not use Gmail, and to stop using Google as a search engine. I do have a Google account, but I use a separate browser to log into that, and log out and close the browser when I'm done. My online Google-avoiding life would be complete if only I could find a good replacement for Googledocs, preferrably free. [more inside]

Sometimes I have to edit a document that contains many instances of the same proper name, such as a story about a person named Scheindler. Is there an easy way to get Word (or another program that I could paste the document into) to indicate any instances that are clearly trying to be Scheindler, but aren't (Schindler or Schiendler or Sheindler)? [more inside]
When I edit a document in Word 2010, I use Track Changes and insert comments (using balloons to call them out). 90% of the time, authors and I work back and forth without having to print these documents, but occasionally, printing them with the comments visible (i.e., with the balloons appearing in the right margin) is necessary. This has never been a problem. UNTIL NOW. [more inside]
I applied for a job in my field recently at company B and just noticed that I left in a sentence from a previous application in my cover letter that mentions the name of the company I'd previously applied to (company A). Whoops. I'm in a fairly small field and company A is one that people have mixed feelings about mainly because they have lots and lots of money and publicity. Should I drop the company I'm currently applying to an email acknowledging my error or not? If I do, any suggestions on how to phrase it other than "I'm an idiot, please forgive me.) [more inside]

I need to copy text between a commercial text editor (TextPad 6.1.3 by Helios) and a home brew program used by my company. When I try to do this now, the highlighted text is moved/cut rather than copied. Is there a Windows 7 or TextPad setting I can use to force the behavior to copy rather than cut the text? I'm using PowerDirector 11 to make a fan edit of a movie on DVD (not for anyone else, just for myself). The first few VOB files were a dream to work with, no problems whatsoever. However, when I added the third VOB file it's only playing the DVD's commentary audio, not the actual film audio. Is there some clip setting in PowerDirector to change that? Many thanks!
Editorial Manuscript Evaluation. What does it cost? How do you find a good match? Any advice for getting value out of the service? I'm looking for a professional that can help me turn a thoroughly polished and "good as I can get it" novel length draft into something publishable. I'd love advice, because I don't want to waste my time or money on this, and I really do want it to work out. Help? Thanks!
I use WordStarter 2010. I'm editing footnotes in a manuscript for a client, and have discovered to my great dismay that WordStarter 2010 doesn't have footnotes enabled — I can change the wording in existing notes, or delete them, but not add new ones or renumber existing ones. Does anyone have any suggestions for a work around that won't involve my having to buy Microsoft Office?

CHALLENGE TIME! You are lent some expensive, professional grade video equipment for 18 hours and told that you may use it as you see fit in the time you have. Assuming little to no preparation beforehand, what do you do and/or film with it? Ideally you'd like the owner (or anyone else who sees your work) to be mildly impressed, knowing that you have no actual solo film making experience whatsoever. [more inside]

When did certain film makers/producers start placing the title of the film at the very end of their film? I've noticed this tends to happen with independant/art-house style films? The film just begins and at the very end of the movie, the screen will flash the title of the film and then the credits will roll. Does someone know who started this?

Help Me Be A Good Web Editor! Please? Hi! The media outlet where I work has recently started a news web site, and I'm the editor. I have a vague idea of what I'm doing, but the actual copyediting-type-stuff I've been doing to AP print standards. I don't have a specific question, but generally, I'd really like to get some of the "official" basics of web editing down. I looked on mediabistro and they don't seem to have a class for this, and I looked on Amazon but I'm not sure about those books. Any suggestions for resources? I'd love either a class or a book that's as useful as the AP Guide, but for print. Your thoughts, hivemind?
I have several lengthy documents I'm editing for a book. The author scanned his hard copy and ran the result through an OCR program. The OCR omitted most of the periods. Is there a way to make Microsoft Word 2000 or OpenOffice Writer 3 put the periods where they go, or am I doomed to putting them in as I edit?
