Eclipse as a Code Browser

How do I use Eclipse as a code browser and indexer and not as a build tool? I'm dealing with a large codebase (C, not Java) that's not an Eclipse project, and I'd like to use Eclipse to navigate the code. The build is custom and complex and I have no fantasies of converting this over to a true Eclipse project. I've installed CDT, which has an indexing feature.

What I'd like to do is this: create a project in a different directory and have the original directory be part of the project. I can't write to the directory with the existing code, and I don't want to copy all the code to a different place. Is this possible?

Suggestions for new keyboard?

I need a new keyboard...suggestions? My old, cheap "Trust Compact Keyboard KB-1120" recently went all HAL on me and started typing messages by itself (ok, after I spilt a drink on it).

Now I was close to buying another from Komplett.co.uk, but I stopped myself.

What other options are out there?

Das Keyboard looks cool, and would be pretty interesting to use, but it says that it clicks... now it struck me that might get annoying...wouldn't you want a silent keyboard? What are your thoughts on this?

Next I looked at the Saitek Eclipse II. This lights up! How cool is that? But is it a bit garish? And will I really use it? On the plus side, it says it's quiet and it seems solid, although it looks like it might take up quite a lot of space on my desk.

I don't do any gaming anymore, so I'm not really interested in a G15. And wireless? Well I've never felt the need for it and it seems like an extra hassle to have to change the battery, but like everything else I've mentioned in this post, I'm open to suggestions.

The only real caveats I have is that the keyboard should be available in the UK, and my budget is around £50, although less would be great!!

So let's hear your opinions please!

Help my wrists deal with Eclipse

My hands hurt; is there an Eclipse IDE plugin that does text completion like NetBeans' ctrl-K or pressing escape in TextMate? In my current job I have to use the Eclipse IDE for standardisation reasons. I previously used NetBeans and came to completely rely on the ctrl-K / ctrl-L shortcuts, which search the text before/ahead for words that match the word you're currently writing.

Example: I write

System.out.println("I am Nathanael van Bendensteck. Like all Bend

and then want a command that completes that "Bend" to "Bendensteck". Which is different from normal code completion. It doesn't understand about Java, but simply searches back through the text till it finds a matching token.

In NetBeans, this is ctrl-K, in TextMate it's the escape key. In Eclipse it doesn't exist. My wrists hurt, and since I don't know what the feature would be called, I can't search for an Eclipse plugin that provides it.

Do you know of such a thing? My wrists would be very grateful.

How do I manage a big Java project?

How do I manage the source code for a big Java program? Back in the olden days, I did a lot of programming in Fortran, Pascal and such. More recently I've developed a good general understanding of OOP and now I'm learning Java. I want to write a pretty big program in Java. It'll probably have 100-200 classes.

What development tool(s) should I use? I'm aware that there are things called "CVS", "Eclipse", and "Ant", although I don't have a good understanding of what they are.

I would strongly prefer to work in OS X, but Windows is also an option.

Need J2EE/Java Training

JavaTrainingFilter - Boston, MA - I would like to find an instructor/consultant to come into my work and teach/train J2EE programming to me and a colleague in approximately a two full-day course. I am currently located in Waltham, MA working for a software company doing non-programming work. Our manager has offered to pay for us to take a Java course since the majority of our product/products deal heavily with Java and the use of the Eclipse IDE. Most courses we've researched are spread out over a couple weeks. We would like an instructor/consultant to come to our company and teach/train us Java with Eclipse in two full-days. Both of us have general programming knowledge (if/else statements, variable types, classes etc). Anyone know of a company that offers this or a list of certified private instructors/consultants they could recommend?

Looking for an Eclipse theme for GeSHI (syntax highlighting)

With Eclipse being such a popular IDE I'm sure someone has created such a theme for GeSHi, but alas my attempts to find one have failed. Anyone have any tips/direction for me?
Subclipse icons

I'm using Eclipse with Subclipse. Until recently, in Eclipse's Navigator window, there were little icons on each folder and file telling you if they had been changed since the last commit. The icons have gone. How do I get them back? Subclipse seems to be working fine aside from this. The 'Team' submenu on the context menu in the Navigator panel is still there, and committing and updating still works fine. Have tried reinstalling Eclipse and plugins &mdash — no joy.

Eclipse 3.2.1 on XP; Subclipse 1.0.4; PyDev 1.2.5.

Effects of solar eclipse spanning decades?

Any ideas on the effects of a prolonged solar eclipse, say 10-30 years? We are trying to theorise the possible effects a prolonged solar eclipse would have on the world if it spanned several decades: ie the biological/organic changes that may occur, as well as any immediate effects it may have to human society.

A few ideas/thoughts we had were.

- 'How quickly would the earths natural energy resources deplete without the aid of the sun?'
- 'Would this create an acceleration in certain organic forms evolving/adapting at an increased rate in order to survive?'
- 'How would this initially effect the human biological clock, ie the adjustment from night and day to one constant state.'
- 'Also what would the world look like when the eclipse was over?'
- 'Looking at the current state of quickly using up fossil fuels, if this eclipse was to occur what would be the alternatives for creating new energy sources? ie solar panels dont work with the sun'
- 'Would this bring on an ice age?'

Thank you for your time.

Eclipsing constructors?

EclipseFilter: I'm trying to switch over to eclipse (for java), but one little thing is bothering me. For some reason, constructor parameters don't pop up and auto complete the way regular function calls do. I can live without the auto complete, but I'm not even getting a listing of the possible constructors and their parameters! Why is this? Every other IDE I've used in the past few years has this feature why not eclipse? And why only on constructors?

What is going on, and is there any way to fix it? This is with eclipse 3.2

Eclipse under Windows Terminal Services

What is the best way to install / configure Eclipse 3.2 under Windows Terminal Services? Eclipse does not have an installer.. all you have to do is unzip it into a folder, click the icon and it starts up. The issue is under Windows Terminal Services is that all users you involve the Eclipse icon get directed to a 'shared' workspace instead of their own.

Is there anyway to install Eclipse so user get their own 'workspace' by default?

Are there any reasonable scientific explanations for the fact that the width of the moon as viewed from the surface of the Earth is precisely the right width to match the apparent width of the sun, and give us total eclipses? It does seem spectacularly unlikely that it turned out that way by mere chance.
