Ebooks Writers

Hi I am starting a ebooks community site where people can submit their books and then we will publish and sell the books for the authors. I was wondering if anyone knew a good way to reach independent authors and how to market our site to them? We are looking for writers of self help, recipes, novels, and anything else. We really want to empower writers to get their stuff out their and to help them make some money in the process. Any help on how to find people like that would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Reseller Rights for Ebooks

There are numerous web sites reselling ebooks or even offering memberships for unlimited downloads (generally for a seemingly nominal fee). One example of a site like this is http://www.thereadingsite.com/join.html So assuming any of these sites are legally doing this, how do they get the rites to resell the ebooks? How would someone go about getting similar rights?

There can only be one ring to rule them all. Or not.

Kindle3 or Color Nook or Samsung Tab or just sticking with dead trees? I've been reading so many reviews, forums, tech support, askme posts, that my head is spinning and I don't know what to think. The new Kindle and Nook are supposedly vastly better than their predecessors, so I'm hoping mefites with new holiday toys might be able to shed some light. [more inside]

The Novel Network site--any good?

Has anyone ever used "The Novel Network"? There is a one time fee of $49 to download as many eBooks, news papers, etc. in any eReader format. I have the Kindle 3 and I download a lot of free eBooks. This site looks like it might be worth it to get access to many publications for a small-ish fee.

PDF Filter: How can I split a 100 page PDF document, where each PDF page has two book pages, into a 200 page PDF document?

I have many scans of books in PDF format. The problem is that each PDF page has two side-by-side book pages and I want to optimize them for reading on a kindle. Because the scans are pretty regular, I am hoping it would be easy to automate the slicing of one page into two and then recompiling the halfpages into a single document. Does anyone know of any open source programs to do this? Perhaps a python library? A feature of Adobe Acrobat?

Best book publication methods?

I have a web site. I want to write a book based on the topic. I have publishers/agents asking to talk to me, but I don't know if I'm ready. For one thing, I'm not convinced traditional publication is best — I'm intrigued by self-publishing and e-books. I'm looking for general advice: What are the pros and cons of each method? It seems that unless I'm lucky, traditional publishing offers the lowest dollar return. But are there other, intangible benefits I'm missing? Exposure? Having somebody who knows what they're doing guide me along? And how do I approach a discussion with agents/publishers so as to get the best deal? [more inside]

Ebook sites that don't suck?

I am working with a client who is convinced this e-book web site is awesome. I am trying to convince him that a long page of text (not to mention the annoying popup) is boring, unprofessional, and no potential customer would bother reading it all. In his defense, he points to the Alexa rankings, which are indeed impressive. Does anyone have any examples, preferably with a better Alexa ranking than that site, of a web site selling an ebook that has a few short convincing paragraphs that sum up why the book is worthy of purchase and has a professional design that doesn't look so awful?
