I have a question about the psychology and ethics of auctions. I have only participated in a handful of online auctions, but the other day I got caught up in an eBay auction that has got me thinking about the nature of auctions ... and curious about whether my actions were ethical. [more inside]

PublishingAuctionFilter: I'm looking for online, eBay-like auction companies/sites that allow: a) writers to auction articles/books to publishers (of books, magazines, newspapers, websites, whatever); b) publishers to auction licensed articles/books to other publishers (ditto); c) publishers to auction ad space to advertisers (“media buyers,” as they say). I've got one so far: eBay is setting up a system to do C. Anyone have A or B? Thanx.

I have a question about bidding on eBay. Take a look at the bid history for this crazy auction to get a place on UK TV's Big Brother programme. Why are some bidders such as ceo_of_crazy_thursdays, puppy_sandwich and robthecricketer posting multiple bids in a row which often add thousands onto the price? Why not post just one big bid? Even stranger, why put up the price so much with sucessive bids before waiting to see who outbids you? The actions of these people appear to only serve to help the seller as it'll massivily boost the final price - so is this some sort of scam?

Cleaning house, looking to sell books, CDs, toys etc., and I'm LOST. Need advice both specific and general. Is eBay best for books and CDs, or are there other places to get better value? With the 'Net awash in Star Wars paraphernalia, how do I find a price for this elaborate 1998 14" talking Darth Vader? (I've checked books and they're mostly about "vintage" SW toys.) How do I value odd things for my uncle, like this pipe from Germany circa 1890 or earlier, or some Xmas cards circa WWII made by Chinese Xtian nuns in Tsing Tao? Is there a market for historical magazines and newspapers, for example with headlines about the first moon walk? [more inside]

Every once in a while, when clicking on an item up for auction at eBay, I get a page with generic message saying "Unfortunately, access to this particular category or item has been blocked due to legal restrictions in your home country..." and cannot see the item. But I'm in the US using a US IP address; why would there be a legal restriction? Going by the most recent incident, from what little I could see of the item's information--basically, the title--it didn't seem to be anything remotely offensive or illegal. Why and how does eBay block certain auctions from certain countries or IP addresses? Is the US one of those countries? How can I view these items? I don't even necessarily want to bid on them, but my curiosity is piqued.

Recently on eBay, I put up for auction something I think is an obvious joke. Naturally, I've already received a question asking me something that, if answered honestly, I feel would give the joke away. Sort of. You know, it's the whole power-in-myth thing. The only way I can describe it short of posting the URL is that it's something I've created (I thought that was obvious in the picture), but given certain current zeitgeist, the impression is that it happened naturally or under strange circumstances. I checked eBay's policy page on this, but wasn't satisfied. I'm not trying to piss anyone off or get in trouble, I'm just trying to make some comedy (and maybe a little money). How creative can I get with my description?

Getting eBay to cancel someone else's auction. Anyone had any luck doing that? In the past, I've tried to get eBay to shut down bootleggers of items that I was trying to sell legitimate copies of (they devalue my sale). Never had any luck.
Today, I was notified that someone is selling a bootleg release of a band I'm affiliated with as if it's a legit release. Unfortunately the auction ends in less than 20 hours so I'm doubting eBay will do squat about it in time but I'd like to be prepared for the next time this happens. eBay's official means of reporting bootlegs is, put simply, useless. (They don't write you back, they don't kill the auction, your email just flies into the ether.) Anyone with any inside dope on doing this effectively?

Is it worth one hundred dollars to place a real estate ad on ebay? I looked over some of the ads and it looks like a lot of trash and scams with occasionaly legit properties. I am selling in a public auction in a little over a week and i want as many people as possible to bid on the property. However I am not rich, which i why i am having the auction, so if i am going to lay down $100 i would like to think it is worth it. Also does anyone know of a better online place to advertise that might attract bidders to a think like this?
