I have a huge, life-determining standardized test tomorrow. A bit of ear plug got stuck inside my ear this morning when half of it ripped out as I tried to remove my earplug. Now, my ear has started hurting a little, and I'm terrified! I'm highly prone to ear infections, and am fearful of waking up with one tomorrow. It would be a huge distraction during this 3 hour test that has required months of preparation! [more inside]

I have a nasty case of otitis externa (swimmers' ear) in both ears and am scheduled to fly in three days. The ears are being treated with antibiotics and I have some heavy-duty pain meds, but I can't imagine that it will be totally cleared up in a couple of days. Outer ear canals are swollen pretty much shut (though eardrum is fine). Can I still fly? How can I make it bearable, when just touching my outer ear makes me want to scream?

In the next two weeks, there will be a new addition to our household -- a baby. (Not mine.) And since it's not mine, I would prefer not to hear it. There are lots of AskMes about earplugs, but many (like the ETY ones) use as a selling point that they don't muffle speech. I want to muffle everything
. Best ear protection for the job, <$30?

My ear's not infected and my Eustachian tubes are not plugged at all. Why do I still have that "full" feeling in my ear and the accompanying echo-sensation when I speak? [more inside]

Hello, AskMefi, let's talk about my ears (again). I am currently in the midst of a severe ear infection. People keep telling me to go to the ER, but I'm not sure what that would accomplish. [more inside]

A few years ago I heard a popular scientist on the radio discussing the effects of listening to music via earbud headphones. He said that if someone can hear the music I'm listening to, I am doing permanent damage to my ears. Is this true?
I would appreciate reference to any peer-reviewed scientific research on this topic, if available.

I went scuba diving for the first time today-- I´m in Mexico, so it was at a resort. They gave us a pool training session and then took us out on the boat-- I believe our final dive was at 45 meters.
The trouble is, I had a hard time equalizing my ears on the descent, and at the bottom I still wasn´t entirely comfortable pressure-wise. I kept going though (maybe unwisely) and felt ok for the duration. [more inside]

Ears have evolved over many many years to be perfect for us to hear with. Why have I never seen an ear shaped microphone?

Can anyone help me find a source for otoliths, or the tiny stones found in the inner ear? Preferably mammalian, ideally primate or even human (I imagine that last one may be ethically way to far, no offense intended). [more inside]

Something is really wrong with my ear - It feels very clogged, very stuffed, and I can't hear out of it well at all - It isn't wax
, after a week of trying over the counter wax removal stuff, I went to a Doc who confirmed that my ears were clean and not waxy - so it must be stuffed up on the other side, and she gave me some prescription decongestant. She said it would clear in 24 hours or so - That was Saturday. It's very unpleasant, and with it not going away, it's actually really scary - and with my work hours, I can't get back to the doc until the weekend at the earliest. Anyone have thoughts, suggestions, anything? I'm really quite desperate at this point.
