Those pretentious Dyson vacuum cleaner commercials have me thinking about the potential inferiority of my trusty steed... I just sprinkled some hot chocolate powder onto a standard rug and brushed it in and my vacuum failed miserably at picking it up with the floor agitator even when I set the agitator lower a notch and it was definitely grinding into the carpet. I then switched over to the hose and picked the stuff up easily, and the suction on the hose didn't even seem that formidable. Is a floor vacuum supposed to be able to pick up stuff like that relatively easily with the agitator?
Is it true what the Dyson commercial is telling me about normal vacuum cleaners losing suction over time? What causes this besides the bag becoming more full?
Does my vacuum cleaner blow, and if so, what should I be looking for in the sucky variety?

Vacuumfilter

Vacuumfilter! Has your Dyson ever shocked you? Also, Dyson vs. Miele? I recently got married and my husband and I received the Dyson "the Ball" Animal as a gift (for which we had registered)... Problem is, I'm finding that it shocks me every time I'm vacuuming and it brushes against me. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Second question related to this--I began searching to see if others had had this shocking problem, and read a lot about Miele vacuums, which I had never heard of before this evening. Can users of both weigh-in here so I can make up my mind about what to do? So far, I've read that the shocking thing can be a problem when you use Dysons on carpet. We have a pretty large house and one cat--most of our house is carpeted (Berber). So far, it's doing a great job of cleaning up the dirt and cat hair, but I don't really like getting a jolt every time I want to clean up. Help!

I need a Dyson!

Help me find the best deal on a Dyson! Where in the Columbus, Ohio area will I get the lowest price on a new (preferably the yellow variety) Dyson vaccuum? Are there any sources of information that can provide this?

Or are Dysons rarely discounted? Do they even GO on sale for any sort of real discount, or must I steel myself to part with $400+ bucks?

I want a Dyson!

Dysonfilter: I know vacuum cleaner questions have been on here before, but mine is a bit more specific-mine's dead and after research my heart seems set on a Dyson... Do I need to wait till I can get a Dyson Animal or would a cheaper Dyson model still make me happy? (At this time I have no pets.)

Dinner with some nerd idols; what would you ask?

How can I make the most of my dinner with Greg Bear, Neal Stephenson, George Dyson, and Donna Shirley? I'm attending an event with those luminaries, and I'm sort of at a loss as to what kinds of intelligent questions to ask (if I have the courage to ask - I'm pretty shy around well-known people).

I've read most of Stephenson's books (though I never could get through the Baroque Cycle); I know a little about George Dyson (more about his father), have read many of Greg Bear's books, and know very little about Donna Shirley.

My question(s): what would you ask in this situation? What are some good resources on these folks that I might look at before the event? I feel like this a special opportunity and I don't want to waste it by asking something stupid. Thanks, MeFi!

Is there a better vacuum than the Dyson?

[VaccumFilter] My Wife wants a new vacuum for Xmas. Namely, she wants that bright yellow $400 vacuum that you see on TV all the time. That seems a bit excessive to me for our small house. Tell me mefities, what's the best vacuum for the money? Is it worth repairing an old vaccum instead?

Has anyone used a Dyson, or the DC07?

After living together for four years, my sig other and I are ready to take the plunge - and buy a good vacuum cleaner. We have a dog, she has allergies, I googled and quickly came up with the Dyson DC07 'Animal', which has 5 stars on Amazon but which costs $500. Simple? Well, other reviews, including some other Amazon reviews, say it's a bit of a dog, and one accuses Dyson of padding the reviews with their PR material. Has anyone used a Dyson, or the DC07? [More inside]
