Should I get a blu-ray player even though the TV is analog? And would it even work? [more inside]

I'm running my DVD player thru an RF modulator (my TV's fairly old, without RCA inputs). The problem: visual noise in the form of faint diagonal lines. Sometimes, repositioning the modulator will improve things somewhat but I'm never happy with the picture quality. How an I fix this? It's driving me nuts.

A little over a month ago, my home was broken into and you were all very helpful. I am slowly replacing items, and now I need to find a DVD player. It must allow playback of many different regions - we have (well, we had, and they were stolen too, but we will replace) a lot of non-US region DVDs. On Amazon, many of the items listed don't seem to support DVD-R - and since my powerbook superdrive can only burn DVD-R, I guess I need something that will support this format. Any recommendations? Advice on region free dvd players. I've checked Dvdoverseas.com and ZoneFreeDvd.com for a variety of players w/built-in video converters (which therefore obviate the need for a multi-system TV). Does anyone have experience with relatively low-end players? I'm trying to augment my system so that I can watch UK DVDs, rather than replace what I've currently got.
