"this dvd for non-modified region 1 players only". Being a techno-dunce, I've recently found out that my macbook won't play these types of restricted dvds. Is there a way to determine in advance which dvds are and are not restricted in this way?

More and more DVDs are coming encoded with Dolby surround sound and many don't have an alternate Dolby stereo option. The resulting sound has way too much background noise mixed in, making it hard to hear the dialogue. Usually, we turn down the volume and turn on the closed captions. Is there another way or am I forced to spend hundreds on a surround-sound system?

I'm moving around a lot. Tired of dragging movie DVD's around. Not looking to make an iso copy (i.e. DVDShrink). Too much disk space. ~750MB avi's would be more ideal, but even as a software developer the options I've Googled are confusing. Is there a simple (i.e.1-button) DVD to AVI converter?

During some insomnia nights, some years ago, I was lucky enough to come across with
Of Beauty and Consolation on the tv, which was an English translation of the dutch tv program
Van de Schoonheid en de Troost. The program is a series of interviews with intellectuals. The Richard Rorty interview is available
on-line.
Now I'm trying to get the DVD box, and it seems there is a
dutch version available, but since I don't know a word of dutch, I'm trying to find the English version.
Anyone can help this quest?

DVD question. First, a little background. At church we have mpeg dvds that we can rip to the computer and add to playlists in windows media player. This works great. The problem is that the Pastor buys other dvds which are not in this format.

I can rip movies to Xvid using Handbrake and it is all good....it rips the movie but no special features which is fine....But lately, when I tried John Adams (miniseries) or the TV show the 4400, it only took one chunk out of the whole disc and ignored the other episodes. Is there a way around this so I can get all the episodes even if they are lumped into one .avi file? (I really don't mind all the fast-forwarding). Thanks...and to all of those reading/responding...have a great weekend.

Two-part question about subtitles and DVD-to-AVI conversions:
1) How do I, using open-source software, "hard-burn" a subtitle file onto an AVI from a DVD source?
2) Even better, is there a video player that can load and display subtitle files to an avi format? What software & subtitle formatting should I be using?

I'll be teaching a film class in London this summer and I'm wondering--will I be able to play my American DVDs on English DVD players? Since I suspect the answer is no, will it work if I play them through my IBM laptop and plug this into an English computer projector? Or will I simply have to buy all new DVDs in the English standard?
