Gift Filter: Help me pick a present for my step-dad. He's Canadian, 65ish, living in Hawaii. He's a nurse, not a huge drinker or reader. He enjoys watching sports to relax, specifically baseball and football- but I wouldn't characterize him as a huge sports fan. Same goes for gadgets- he's got an iphone and some nice stuff, but he's not over the moon for them. He adores my mother and doesn't seem to have a ton of hobbies. He really enjoys watching the History Channel, so I've heard. He and my mother also enjoy meaty thriller serials (24, Alias, BSG).
He's a wonderful, caring man, and I'd like to get him something he'd really enjoy. I'm thinking about a boxed set of DVDs, but I need some advice:

To archive some work in a class I'm teaching, I would like to record a series of video clips, burning each student's clips to their own rewriteable DVD as we go. Then, on the last day of class, I'd like to quickly finalize a DVD for each person that constains only that person's clips.
What device do I want?

Why can't I find "32 Short Films About Glenn Gould" on DVD? I really loved that movie -- a drama/documentary about the brilliant, eccentric Canadian pianist who played the works of J.S. Bach like no one else. I haven't seen it in 10 years though, so I'm not sure how it has held up. I tried to find it recently and it doesn't seem to be available on DVD. There are some VHS tapes on eBay, but I don't want a VHS tape and don't want it bad enough to pay $100 for it (some copies were moving for over $300 on Amazon.) Does anyone know why it (presumably) hasn't been released on DVD? A poor money risk for a studio? Rights problems of some kind? Thanks.

If I wanted to watch Fringe, what episodes should I watch If I don;t want to watch a lot of boring monster-of-the-week stuff?
This list seems like a good starting point, though I'll happily include episodes that are watchable or good rather essential to the overall series mythology. For bonus points, which disks of the DVD library should I get from the video store to see the good episodes?

Help me preserve memories and save money... I have several old VHS home movies I'm trying to digitize so I can preserve them and edit together the good parts. I used a GoVideo machine to create DVDs that are playable.
But I can't copy the DVD files to my PC or otherwise rip them. I sent one of my tapes to a company and their DVD copies to my PC and into my movie editor without a hitch. What gives? Do I have to suck up the cost and send the rest in to the service? Anything I might be doing wrong?

I recently bought The Twilight Zone Season 2 box set on DVD. I'm wondering how to turn the set of DVDs into a nice TV show series in iTunes complete with episode titles and other information about each episode. I've tried using Handbrake, but all of the DVD chapters are of the same length and it looks really confusing. I have an iPad and would like it to look like other TV show seasons do that are purchased from the iTunes store. Anything super automated and created for this purpose?

Please help us decide: our home video arrangement is very old-tech and simple, with cable feeding a VCR/DVD combo, then into an older CRT TV. My wife programs the VCR to tape TV shows for single viewing, ala TiVo. The DVD player has been very temperamental for a couple of years, basically worthless by now. We have less than $100 to spend.
