I want to rip my TV Series DVD's and store the episodes on my computer (Windows 2003 or XP). Can someone tell me what hardware I need to do this? Just a DVD drive in the computer? I've found some software information, including this old AskMe thread, but updated recommendations would be helpful. [more inside]

My friend gave me a home-burned DVD of DIVX content that comes with SRT subtitles. My DVD player plays the media fine, except it seems to display the subtitles too large -- they line-break in odd places and then the second line of text doesn't appear on screen at all. But if I watch the files on my computer in VLC, everything is fine. [more inside]

I have a bunch of .mkv files, a Mac (10.3.9, Toast), and a DVD player that plays divx. How can I convert those dang .mkv files to a format readable by my DVD player? Thanks.

Burning DVDs: I want to get clips from (commercial and locked) DVDs and into a new DVD for class, with a menu system. I've seen this explanation, but I have a Mac (OS X, I could be convinced to upgrade to 10.4 if necessary). What's the easiest and/or best way to do this? [more inside]

I need a XP utility to convert some DivX files onto a DVD for my friends. Seeing that the quality is about the same as VHS, I would like to fit in as much as possible on a DVD without loosing even more quality.
Any cool tools out there?

I have a legit movie produced by my employer on DVD that I need to convert to mpeg (mpeg2 I'm guessing) to upload to the Internet Archive. All the l33t warez converters seem to do divx or vcd or vob. I can't seem to find anything on mac or windows that will do this simple task for me. I just want the 10 minute long movie at track 4 on the disc as a mpeg file. Sounds simple but after using half a dozen apps, I can't seem to get the job done.

What's good (free) software to rip my DVDs to a compressed format: Avi/DivX etc, for back-up/usability purposes? Ideally something that allows me to preserve widescreen and is 'user-friendly'.
