A young baby in our family is very alert, active and friendly and my sister and myself both found ourselves referring to her as 'canny'. But when we were asked what the word means, and why it applies to her, we couldn't quite explain it. Is there any one on here, probably from the North of England, who could have a go at explaining 'canny', meaning and usage (and possibly derivation?)
Can you recommend a female marriage counselor in Durham, NC? Or, failing that, any good female therapist who can help me make sense of my marriage?
We are going to Chapel Hill for a long weekend, starting 1/1, and are very seriously considering moving there from Brooklyn. I've read previous threads on the Research Triangle area, and we may have an appointment with a realtor set up, but we're not quite sure how to prioritize what areas/streets/towns we see, and, in particular, don't want to end up driving around aimlessly, especially with a 7 month old in the backseat. Mefites, please help us organize our time so we can make an itinerary! [more inside]
Every year our family gets together for a post-holiday dinner at a restaurant near our house, in Durham, NC. People are coming from all over the region, so a potluck would be difficult. We normally do this at Golden Corral, but they are booked at our preferred time, and my partner and I just really, really don't like Golden Corral. What are other restaurants that can handle our party? (Details within.) [more inside]
Sooner than any of us would like, we're going to have to put one of our cats to sleep. I've never done this before. Looking for a Durham, NC area vet who can come to our home, and for a pet cremation service. [more inside]
Artemis is an awesome cat in Durham/Chapel Hill, NC, who walks, runs, and jumps, but not as well as she should. One vet, in March, found nothing wrong; another, in June, saw she was walking oddly and said to wait a while to see if it got better on its own. Now I'm looking for a vet with expertise or interest in feline musculo-skeletal issues for the next steps. [more inside]
We are a couple in our mid-50's and are looking for some specific things in our next move; more temperate weather than the North East where we are now; progressive thinking people, good food and a thriving food scene, ability to buy a house for less than $350K, low property taxes ( less than $5K) within driving distance (45 minutes is the max) to a major airport and open-minded people. We are both entrepreneurial and active, love the outdoors and nature and want a small yard for a garden and to be near some kind of water be it a large lake, river or coast. We are considering Portland Ore. or Durham NC. We are still working and work for ourselves. Anyone have an opinion on either or both?

TherapyFilter: For a friend--I am looking for a lovely therapist in the Durham, North Carolina area (and reasonably nearby regions as well). The therapist would preferably be more interpersonal or psychodynamically/psychoanalytically oriented versus cognitive-behavioral or purely supportive, be queer-friendly, and also have some experience treating anxiety disorders. Feel free to MeMail or e-mail me if you do not want to post publicly. Thanks, MetaFilter!

The McTootsalot family has outgrown our home, and we’re looking to move this summer. We love our area (Durham, NC) so if we could we’d love to just move into a larger house down the street that could accommodate our growing clan. However, there is a caveat: schools. How much importance we should place on schools? [more inside]

MakeMyMindUpForMe-filter: If you were a not-so-young-anymore grad student to be, and had to choose between spending the next 6(ish) years of your life in Durham or Chicago, which would you choose on a purely lifestyle basis (academic/$$ considerations being relatively equal), and why? Best spas or resorts near Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill? Think "pampering." [more inside]
I want to go to there, but I need your advice on where "there" is. Starting point: Toronto. Range: any land within 100 km (60-ish miles) of High Park, but I can go further for something really special. Means of transport: my trusty steed. Time frame: now until November-ish. I'm looking for great routes or awesome destinations, urban, rural or suburban, like the best roti in Scarborough, a tiny potter's studio somewhere in Peel, or a gorgeous path by some body of water that isn't Lake Ontario. I want to go somewhere to do something neat, like picking apples or riding horses. And this is not Torontofilter or bikefilter. I'm looking for creative ideas from anyone, anywhere. [more inside]

What are some of the coolest/oddest things to photograph in the Chapel Hill / Durham / Carrboro, NC area? I'm looking to do a photography project with no human subjects, and want to highlight the weirdest stuff I can find in the area. Things like Clyde Jones's Critters, the old concrete hippo in Bolin Creek, the doll-head car, even the grout-pun men's room on campus... the more minute, obscure, and odd, the better. Ugly is A-OK. I'll photo landmarks, graffiti, vehicles, abandoned things, and maybe even Mark Jacobson, since I don't think he counts as a human subject. Nothing is too stupid to photograph, as long as it's reasonably accessible to the public. I'll head to Durham, Orange, and northern Chatham Co. in search of the bizarre, the off-center, and the just-plain-idiotic.

What do you think of Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill? [more inside]
Where should I go next weekend? I live in Durham, NC and would like to keep the drive under two hours. Key points would include: really great B&B or eco-hotel (treehouse? massive windows looking outside?), great walks or cute town nearby, a body of water (lake, ocean, inlet) or nice woods, clean lines rather than frilly, or luxurious rather than old-lady-B&B. It would be great if you could recommend a specific place (Asheville is too far away for this weekend), or better yet, a specific hotel/B&B/inn. Pretend that money is no object, but I'd like to keep this under $200 a night (less is better) if possible; if a really unique place came up, I'd splurge. [more inside]
What are some good neighborhoods around or in the Raleigh/Durham NC area ? (MI) [more inside]
Heading to the Raleigh/Durham area for 4th of July weekend to visit my brother. To (hopefully) avoid traffic, we'll be leaving pretty early in the morning, but it's a relatively short drive, and both my brother and my sister-in-law have to work that day, so we'll have a good 6 hours to kill before they get home. Any suggestions for a) a good place to get some lunch once we arrive and b) interesting places to visit, either in Raleigh/Durham or along the way? (I'd ask my brother, but he just moved there himself about 2 months ago.)
