Modem slowing down and stopping?

Modem question. I currently am connected to the Internet via Qwest using DSL, using two Mac computers (one using the modem's wireless signal, one plugged in with an ethernet cord). Over the past few years, our connection has been slowing down and breaking regularly, which can be fixed by turning the modem off and back on, but now it slows down and stops about every few minutes. The modem is almost five years old and Qwest tells me it's probably breaking down.

My question is bipartite: Firstly, does this sound like it is likely the problem? Secondly, if so, what modem do you recommend we purchase. I would want to get a new one tomorrow, so I am not looking to order one from Qwest and have to wait for it to be delivered.

Thanks!

Either I'm an idiot or they're idiots: help with Verizon DSL and outgoing mail please

My DSL-fu is failing me. How do I get Verizon DSL to let me send mail from my mac.com account? I've followed all of the recommended settings. Set my smtp to outgoing.verizon.net. Set it to authenticate. But it's rejecting my (otherwise working fine) password.

Any tricks to setting up Verizon DSL to work well with other mail services?

Thanks for any clues.

Help me fix my iMac!

iMacFilter. I'm attempting to connect my slot-loading iMac to a SBC DSL router. I can't get the iMac to recognize the DSL connection or locate the modem.

In my attempts to rectify this, I reorganized the hard drive using Discwarrior. Now the computer somehow boots up with MacOS 9.2, even after an OSX re-install. Help!
