Please explain to me how Drupal's API works

I'm trying to build a form in Drupal 7 using examples like this but all I've been able to figure out is that I make my own module and... then what? How does the module actually become a form? I feel like I'm missing some huge part of the concept here and Drupal's documentation is either too simple or too advanced. What am I not getting? Thanks MeFi! [more inside]

Which CMS for building a social networking website?

I've been brought onboard by a startup company to fix up their social networking website, which was built for them in Joomla and is a complete glitch-filled mess, both front and back end. After upgrading to the latest Joomla version, the site has more or less broken (does not function at all at the front end). Should I attempt to patch up and rebuild this mess in Joomla, or start over with a better choice of CMS? [more inside]

Should I use wiki or blog software for my simple database?

I'd like to build a publicly editable online database. Each record of the database will consist of images and a few bits of meta data and maybe some Flickr-style tags. I don't have the skills to build a custom database nor the money to pay someone to build it. Is a wiki the way to go? If so, which free (or cheap) wiki software do you recommend for someone with very little programming knowledge? If I remove the "publicly editable" requirement, would a plain ol' WordPress blog with tags be the cleanest option?
