Is there a word for these types of web-based tools, and a widely-used way to make them? One: a way make a web-based reference guide / glossary / help centre. Two: a tool that will generate a custom 20-page PDF based on complex user inputs, complete with table of contents. Are there open-source, well-supported solutions for building these things? Maybe a way to combine some plugins for Drupal or Wordpress? I really have no idea how to tackle this.

I'm interested in using a Ruby CMS as a substitute for the usual Wordpress or Drupal. Although I know my way around Rails, I am not sure whether there might be a good off-the-shelf way to make the control panel as easy to use for regular folks who are not programmers.

I'm looking for some guidance in my quest to enter a moderate amount of information into a database, and then choose an appropriate front-end to display that data with a small array of filters and search options. The project is not complicated; I mostly want to avoid wasting time learning things the hard way (in contrast to my usual style).

I like the idea of a content management system for an elementary school, so students can write and publish in a clean system with a back-end database. Help me understand the dimensions of the idea.

I've been brought onboard by a startup company to fix up their social networking website, which was built for them in Joomla and is a complete glitch-filled mess, both front and back end. After upgrading to the latest Joomla version, the site has more or less broken (does not function at all at the front end). Should I attempt to patch up and rebuild this mess in Joomla, or start over with a better choice of CMS?

I'm going to be helping a friend set up a small web store. I'm already pretty comfortable with Wordpress, somewhat comfortable with Drupal, so I'd prefer to use one of those plus a shopping-cart plugin. I've got some particular requirements.

I'd like to build a publicly editable online database. Each record of the database will consist of images and a few bits of meta data and maybe some Flickr-style tags. I don't have the skills to build a custom database nor the money to pay someone to build it.
Is a wiki the way to go? If so, which free (or cheap) wiki software do you recommend for someone with very little programming knowledge?
If I remove the "publicly editable" requirement, would a plain ol' WordPress blog with tags be the cleanest option?
