IANAMusician: The Libertines' song "Last Post on the Bugle" (in the intro) and "Pull Shapes" by the Pipettes (in the first verse) are examples of this beatbeat-beat rhythm that I keep hearing in songs that I like. My Google-fu has failed me; is there a name for this kind of beat? What other songs have it?

Name-that-song-filter: I watched a high school play yesterday where a song I've heard before was used as the main theme music. I may have heard it previously in the context of binaural beats or "mind songs" or whatnot. It's entirely instrumental, although it is probably synthesized. Drums and a xylophone are used heavily, I think. I'd use words such as jungle and trippy to describe it. Thanks very much in advance!

How does percussion work in rock & pop music? I can listen to the drum part in a song and appreciate that it sounds great, but I haven't got the slightest idea how they decide which bangy things to bang on and when. [more inside]

I saw a really cool ad for Fight Club featured on the awesome channel G4. What I am after is the soundtrack to that ad, does anyone know what it was? Or possibly where there are scores like it? It was basically a 30 second really intense drum beat. I know this is vague, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

My music theory professor challenged our class to identify a married couple where one plays the violin and the other the trumpet. His theory is that the personalities of violin and trumpet players clash. Can anyone name a prominent musical couple where one plays a bowed instrument and the other brass? I would imagine that a saxophone player or drummer would be equally incompatible with a string player.

I've seen some drummers lay small cymbals over their snare drums to get a loud, rich 'PANG!' sound. I like that, which leads me to my two-part question: 1. What's the best size/type of cymbal for this effect, and 2. what other ways can I manipulate my drums (preferably without damaging the shells) to get unique sounds?

My son mentioned last night that he would really like a pair of drumsticks like those Meg White uses from time to time. He says they have small tambourines and shakers on the ends of them but they are otherwise regular sticks. Is there a formal name for these? I'd really like to purchase a pair for him for Christmas. Is there a commerical version of something like this eDrum project? I've found severa "drum modules" that take input from drum trigger devices and turn them into MIDI, but most of them are quite expensive. I'm hoping this is because they include built in sound generation. I am simply looking for a box that will take trigger inputs and produce MIDI output for as little as possible.

Any drummers out there? I've been wanting to learn to play the drums for a long time. I have a solid musical background - years of piano, saxophone, and guitar - and a good sense of timing. Without much spare cash for lessons, I'm wondering if it's possible to teach yourself to play. If so, any good instructional books/CDs/techniques? And what about a starter kit - features, brands, models, price range?
