My 13 year old son has expressed an interest in learning to play jazz drums. While I'm thrilled that he's showing an interest in such an accomplished and challenging field, I have no idea how to proceed. Should he take lessons or just pick up some stix and put on some Gene Krupa? If lessons are the way to start, how do I find someone who can give him what he's going to need? The teachers in my area all seem to be self-taught rockers, making it difficult to know if they're worth the commitment. Is there a way to identify a good drum teacher? All advice is appreciated.

I found a used
darbuka on craigslist (yay!) and have been wanting to pick up a hand drum for a while. It's 12" wide and 18" tall according to the ad, and the current owner says he thinks it is made out of aluminum. It has a sticker on it that says "World Beat Percussion" out of Pakistan, and he wants $65 for it, which I can afford. How can I know whether this a good drum at a good price? What am I looking for?

I'm a drummer in an indie-rock band with a 5-piece kit who is looking to expand my setup to include a drum sampling pad. I want something that has unique percussion sounds (not just cheesy electronic beats), built-in effects, plenty of storage space to upload my own samples, and the ability to record and loop live drumbeats. Any advice?

I'm looking for a video documentary from a couple years ago tracing the history of the Roland
TR-808 drum machine. Released only on the web, it's similar in tone to the
Everything is a Remix series; dry delivery, well researched, touches on remix culture. The
Newcleus track
Jam On It is prominently featured as a signifier of the 808's transition from a not-so-hot replacement for a drummer to being used for the sounds unique to it. If I recall correctly, it's about 8 minutes in length. It's not The Shape of Things That Hum.

In the early 90's I saw a band at the Limelight in New York. The band was made up entirely of percussion instruments. There were maybe 10 people playing and they were all painted gold. I cannot for the life of me remember what they were called and it's driving me nuts. Does sound familiar to anyone?

I'd like to spend $100 buying my teenage cousin some
drumsticks. He loves Green Day and KISS, and already asked for
these. I'll get him some of those, but thought instead of just buying him
tons it might be cool to pick up a pair of mallets/brushes as well? Can anyone recommend some higher-end brushes/mallets for a fan of that Eric Singer series?

how does one go about isolating drum tracks from a recording? i'm trying and have been trying to sample and isolate drum hits from recordings (as in no other instruments on the sample). i know it's possible (mostly cause hip hop reminds me so), i just don't know how. i've tried to avoid the problem by just sampling from drum solos, but that usually only get's me so far. please, if anyone with experience in sampling is out there in filterland, speak now!

SOUND QUESTION - What are best drum machines, analog preferred, for about one hundred or two hundred dollars new/used? Alesis? earlier versions of the Groovebox? What about great old vintage ones? I know nothing about this topic and would love some guidance. Glitchy sound or authentic drum sounding, preferably with no midi, just straight knobs and buttons with RCA out - thank you for your nerding!

Working on a project dealing with the drum (that is, skin stretched over a frame) as a technology. I need to name all the applications of a drum I can think of, and their humanistic implications. I've got Drum as Music and Drum as Communication. But I mentioned exploring the fact that you can *feel* drums before other instruments, that they have a very physical aspect, and the prof said there are tons of applications in this category alone. WTF? Something about separating wheat from chaff with drums? Anyway, I have to turn in a proposal by 1 pm tomorrow, and I would love your help. Ideas on other applications?

This Friday, my daughter and I are hosting a drum circle. This will be the first one in our small Midwestern town (that I know of, anyway). We are both still very much beginners; we know some rhythms, but aren't adept soloists. (So we're not really qualified, but we're not letting that stop us.) Please share your favorite strategies for a fun drum circle that gets everyone in the groove.
