Insurance is good and I'd like to keep it.

Is filing too many claims always a death knell for your insurance? Our neigborhood has been going through a crime wave that is rather unprecented and ongoing. We've been broken into twice in the last three years and filed claims both times. The claim for both adds up to around $6,000. Great.

Then some schuck injured himself on a used tool he bought from us on Craiglist. Insurance company provided a lawyer who says "they have no case, surprised they had the balls to try and file this."

Yet, of course, we all still have to go through the requisite motions. We have been with this insurance company for home and auto for 10 years or so, but everything online I've read indicates that they are about to drop us like a hot potato. Do individual agents have the ability to protect us from whatever algorithm wants to dump us? Can we raise our deductibles, add some coverage something to get us some leverage?

Anyone have any experience with this? What did you do? What insurance company did you find to take your high risk butt?

My toe continuously keeps threatening to drop out of joint causing much distress and pain - any ideas about what's going on?

My toe continuously keeps threatening to drop out of joint causing much distress and pain - any ideas about what's going on? Back in February while out walking, the second toe of my right foot popped right out of joint with no prior warning. After much pain and clutching with both hands, did the toe go back into joint and, while the foot was incredibly tender and sore for the rest of the day, I was up walking fine the next day and... fine also for the two months since. So I just wrote it off as one of those things.

However in the past week, foot-matters have seriously deteriorated - rapidly and out of the blue. What began as the odd niggling 'uh oh here we go again' sensation has now become quite debilitating. It's gotten to the point where if I walk for longer than 5-10 minutes, it feels as if that second toe is going to drop right out of is socket! I get a weird, heavy feeling in the toe, accompanied by a 'knot' of pain in the front/top of the foot or the occasional weakness in the inner side of my right knee. To look at it, the toe doesn't seem swollen or sticking out at a weird angle, nor is it discoloured. When I'm walking, I get the feeling that I shouldn't lift my foot too high [or the toe, you know, drop out] and also the overwhelming urge to scrunch up my toes or grab my foot to keep everything in place. If I DO scrunch my toes, I have to be very, very careful because the dislocation feels like it's going to happen again.

The real weird part is, I can walk around and manage fine if I'm just puttering about the office or house, but the other morning I couldn't complete my usual 30min walk to work and today just walking by the end of the day is making me pause and gasp every few steps, wincing at the pain and what *might* happen. But I've no numbness anywhere and after rest the foot is fine for a while.

I've finally going to the doctor in the morning, I'm just wondering if what's wrong with me will get dismissed as a mere sprain or something trivial [considering I can walk on the foot after resting for a bit and the toe itself isn't, you know, black and swollen], when honestly it feels so much worse. I know what a sprain is like and this is so removed from that. But if it was a break - since February? - I'd certainly know about it before now.

Does anybody have any experience with random dislocation and might know what it is/causes? Or what treatment is ahead of me tomorrow with the doc?

Emails, Domains and the Drop

Domains, Email Addresses, and The Drop: Following an earlier question on MeFi, I'd quite like a unique professional email address, but my name is common and almost all ".com" variants have been snapped. Lend me your kind ears and your valuable hive experiences and advice. The situation is this, firstnamelastname.com is taken up and registered till August 2010 on EasySpace, firstinitiallastname.com is registered till July 2015 on GoDaddy.

Short of that for the meanwhile, I'll settle for the ".tv" domains, specifically, option A: firstnamelastname.tv or Option B: firstinitiallastname.tv domains.

Now here comes the first question, how realistic would getting firstinitiallastname.com be? I've been reading this article, but still can't gauge...would firstnamelastname.com be any better?

Eventually, i'd like to move to ".com" domains as well, and so in light of ".com" 'get-ability', here's the second question: What would you think is the better choice to settle down on, A or B (see above of options)?

If I want to drop into college courses, should I ask the professor for permission or should I just sit in?

If I want to drop into college courses, should I ask the professor for permission or should I just sit in? I'm trying to decide my path in life and have been spending the past 2 years a local community college. I've recently realized I want to take more courses then I would have time to complete. The way I've decided to try and fight this is simple, become a drop in. I go into any class that I'm somewhat interested in and act as any other student. I won't get credit, but thats not what I'm there for. I tried it out last year for a few classes with the teachers permission and all was well, except those were near the end of the semester and the teachers were part time. I've actually contacted 2 of my old professors to see if I can drop into their classes, no problem. I'm worried that If I just go into a class with a teacher I don't know there will be more of a problem.

iPhone + Warranty + Messed up screen = Free Replacement?

iPhone still under warranty... screens acting crazy... what should I do? I've had an iPhone since about March 2008. I am sort of clumsy compared to the average person, and the iPhone has hit the floor a few times but nothing too serious.

Tragedy struck though a couple weeks ago. The phone hadn't been dropped in several weeks, but the screen started acting funny. At first it just had 3 thin lines running down it on the left side. As each day went by, more and more lines started showing up. They move around, sometimes blocking the entire left quarter of the screen, sometimes showing parts that were previously covered up. There is a small ding on the side of the phone NOT showing the lines. As the glass is not broken, I firmly believe this is an issue unrelated to dropping and I want it covered by the warranty.

Anyways, I want it fixed and I really don't want to have to pay more per month for the new data plan if I replace it with the 3g version. What can I do/say to the Apple Store employees to get them to fix or replace my phone? I'm not above fudging the details if it can get the job done. I'm okay paying some money to get it repaired if necessary.

Dry out moist fertilizer for drop spreader?

How do I dry out an old bag of weed and feed for use with a drop spreader? I have a big bag of Scott's Weed and Feed I bought last year. I used about 1/4. I did not seal the bag, it has been soaking up moisture all year. According to everything I could find it should still be effective, but it clogs up my drop spreader.

Is there a safe way to dry this out so it will function? It's moist enough to stick to my gloves, and I can form it into a loose ball. Sure I can get a new bag, but I'd rather use it up.

Is Iphone insurance worth it?

Are there are good Iphone insurance policies or discreet cases that would protect from drops? I decided to get an iphone after my current phone stopped working due to rain. It was a Audiovox Smt 5600 and it was a great phone and I'm surprised it worked as long as it did. It managed to survive many drops but I'm nervous the iphone might not be so resilient... So I was wondering if anyone could suggest some sort of insurance for the iphone. I found one from SquareTrade that seemed like a pretty good deal at first. It is only 10% of the purchase price to extend the warranty 3 years. However it is an additional 50 dollars for the Accidental Damage Protection and then another 50 dollars deductible if you have to use it. Do you think that would be worth it? Has anyone dealt with this company? Also, can anyone suggest a protective skin that might save it from a drop? Thanks!

Who's the best Icarus?

What are your favourite failed flight inventions? I'm doing research for an article on failed flight inventions, and I'm looking for stories of fantastic failures (specifically from the 19th and 20th centuries, but if it's really great and earlier, I might include mention of it).

Franz Reichelt, The Flying Tailor, was my inspiration, and while I've been reading up on albatross machines and early gliders, I'm most interested in flying apparatus which was meant to be worn (like Reichelt's overcoat).

So what are your favourite failed flying inventions/books about failed flying inventions? Help me include the most obscure, outlandish, and intrepid inventions (and consequently feel sad that they didn't work and I'm stuck with walking).

I need to be universal baby :)

Can you help me recode one part of my blog / website so that it works in all browsers? (I think its an easy fix that I am over looking) I have a blog at www.mentaldribble.com. I love the new theme I found but there’s one problem. On the upper right hand corner where it says PAGES, CATEGORIES, ARCHIVES, when you mouse over it there is suppose to be a drop down list. It works in IE 7 but not 6, and I believe it works correctly in Firefox too but I would like it to work in all the browsers.

What can I change so the code works in IE 6?

Also - I recently added a few more categories and the drop down is interfering with the links on the left of the page and I cant seem to select any of the categories that overlap those permanent links on the left. Namely "virgin islands" category on the drop down overlaps the search box, and when I try to select that link the drop down list just disappears..

If you can suggest a better way to accomplish this drop down list, or can just fix the way it currently works, that would be AWESOME.

Thanks hive mind.

Drag and drop across browser windows?

Web dev Q: Is there a way to figure out what has been dragged and dropped from one browser window to another? Suppose I have 2 Firefox windows. Window 1 contains an HTML page with an image on it. If I drag+drop the image from window 1 to window 2, Firefox knows that it should open the image in window 2. If the image was linked to a webpage, then it instead opens the linked page in window 2.

I'd like to be able to do the "window 2" part in my own web app. The user could drag and drop any image from any website onto my web app's page. My web app would then figure out what has just been dropped (image URL or linked page URL) and act on it, without the event propagating to Firefox's default behavior.

Is this possible? I've looked online, and it looks like the only way to do it is to have a signed Java applet, as box.net does. Any other way you can think of, using Javascript, Flash, etc.? Would a Firefox extension perhaps be an answer? Thanks for your help.

What causes intermittent browser stalls?

What causes intermittent browser stalls? They happen on every web browser ever. I click a hyperlink and my browser reports something like "Waiting for domain.com" or "Connecting..." on its status line, but nothing happens. I re-click the link and the web site loads fine. It happens maybe one time in 500 clicks, and it's happened on every version of every browser on every platform that I've used in the last 10 years.

I polled some friends, and the ones I'd categorize as computer-savvy all reported this phenomenon (the others didn't, but would probably not distinguish this from their big list of Things Computers Do Mysteriously).

I distinguish these lost requests from the typical case of a slashdotted webserver or obviously broken network setup by the fact that re-clicking the link works and there is no apparent further degradation of speed or connectivity.

So what happens to these lost requests?

That fresh feeling

GuyFilter : preventing that last drop. We've all had this (I guess) : no matter how long you wait, or even how hard you shake (or even twist!) it, always you will leave the bathroom knowing that one last drop of urine is gonna soil your pretty underwear - generally when you sit back at your desk, getting that "hu ho" moment.
So, on to my question : has anyone among you found a way to prevent this last drop to happen at random, or the perfect way to "get rid of it" ? How do some of you keep "that fresh feeling" ?

I was over at their house last night and they remarked that they couldn’t drag and drop. I took a look at the machine and sure enough, using explorer in any of its incarnations (My Computer or the Windows Explorer) they cannot drag and drop. If I try to drag a file from the desktop to the recycle bin or a desktop folder I get the windows icon of the circle with a slash through it telling me I can’t do that. If I try to drag from folder to folder inside the explorer, it just doesn’t do anything. They had GaoBot virus which I removed with the tool from Symantec’s website, but still no drag and drop. My Google-Fu has left me high and dry this AM. Any suggestions?
