Baby you can't drive my car... yet.

NJ 16 year old wants his permit, has met household requirements for driving (grades, behavior). Now it's time for me to hold up my end of the bargain. Driving schools I've contacted cost $300+ for the mandatory 6 hours of training. Does anyone have experience with a less expensive alternative? Here in NJ they have graduated drivers licenses for teenagers. When you're 16 you can get your permit after passing a written test and taking 6 hours of behind the wheel training with a driving school registered with the state. After that, you drive with a licensed driver for at least 6 months, then can test for your Cinderella license (in by midnight, etc)

I have called all of the driving schools in my local area and have serious sticker-shock. Do they really mean a 16 year old can't drive unless he or his parents plunk down $300+???

'Refresher' driving lessons in or near DC?

DC-area driving lessons: I'm a qualified UK driver, and I want to organize a few hours of "refresher" driving instruction to build confidence on US roads. But I'm finding it strangely difficult to arrange. Suggestions for specific DC-area instructors, or advice on where to look and what to ask for? As far as I can tell, there isn't any equivalent to the British School of Motoring — a national franchise that might not always have the best instructors but is basically reliable. I've found endless lists of driving schools in DC, MD and VA, of course, but no way of distinguishing between them. Several I emailed didn't respond, and the two I called seemed a bit baffled by the idea of refresher lessons: perhaps I'm using the wrong phrasing? The US system seems to involve a lot of desk-based safety instruction, which I'm pretty sure is not what I need. I'd be very grateful for specific recommendations, or any other thoughts.

Baby, I can't drive your car

Anybody know a good, credible adult driving school in the Minneapolis area? I'm 22 and looking to learn how to drive. Unfortunately, as a relatively recent transplant, I don't know anyone willing to teach me on their own car. I'm not an especially nervous person, but if I'm going to be paying for lessons, I'd like it to not be a scam. Does anybody know any good driving schools in the Minneapolis area?

i will, now, drive 55

I got an extremely expensive traffic ticket (my first! and $632!) for doing 97 in a 75 on a lonely stretch of road outside of Lovelock, Nevada. I paid the ticket, and asked the court (and the ticketing officer, at that point) about traffic school; they both said that the points wouldn't transfer to California or go on my record, but as far as traffic school to lower insurance went, it was between me and my insurance company, and they'd get in touch with me. However, can't I do something pre-emptively to keep this from going on my insurance record? Or am I screwed? I paid the fine in mid-June, just before it was due (took a little while to save the money); the ticket was issued in mid-May.

I need a License to Drive

What's the best driving school in Chicago for me? I'm 29 and need to get a driver's licence. I don't have a car to practice with, and my work/school schedule limits when I can take classes. I'm a fast learner, and have been behind the wheel before briefly; I'm looking for a place that will let me progress at my own pace as opposed to having to sit through boring class sessions. Does anyone have experience with any driving schools in Chicago (preferably the Humboldt Park/Logan Square/Wicker Park area); or should I just study for the written test, and then take the practical test over and over again until I figure it out? Thanks!
