I use Macs. I use a flash drive to carry powerpoint presentations and other documents that I need to access on PC's running various flavours of Windows, which are not mine and I will not have administrator access to. Is there a way that I can protect/encrypt the drive in a way that will let me use it on both systems, without having to pre-install software on the Windows system? I do not need government-grade encryption, just something that will stop casual snoopers accessing the data if I lose the drive.
I have had three flash drives recently, and they keep failing. This is why I am buying more. When I used the newest one tonight (not for the first time) I got a balloon message saying, "Your drive has malfunctioned and is no longer recognized by the computer." (I got that message or similar on the first two.) [more inside]

It's fund drive time, and I have been a contributor and a host promoting fund drives for public and community radio. But a common complaint I hear from people is public radio encourages them to do their part, meaning contribute. The promise is the sooner you do, the sooner the drive will end. [more inside]
I’m finally signing up for an unlimited Crashplan package this weekend. This is my first time using web storage for any of my backup needs. Can you let me know if I’m thinking correctly about 1) what I back up online and 2) what makes sense for backing up in the future? [more inside]

What's the story with Windows and big disks? Specifically, Windows 7 and a 3tb drive. I've read what Microsoft and others say about using large drives with Windows 7. I gather it works. However, I haven't found a how-to guide that actually spells out how to get the thing done. In my case, it would not be the boot drive. I'd boot off an SSD and use the 3tb drive for storage. How can I do a clean install on that? I've tried and Windows doesn't see all of the 3tb drive. (The GPT format option is greyed out.) Then, if I get Windows to recognize the 3tb drive, can I partition it into multiple logical drives? So, for example, the SSD would be C: and I'd split the big drive into D: and E: . Doable?

I have it plugged into the USB port on the router and it is powering on, but not mounting. What have I done wrong? How can I get this to work? Does anyone know how to go about accessing the hard drive files once it is mounting properly? My CD/DVD drive on my HP laptop isn't working. It won't open when I push the open button, doesn't respond when I try to open it through a program, but can be forced open. However, when I insert a disc of any kind, it doesn't read it. Is there a way to solve this problem, or will I have to go through the annoying process of taking it to Best Buy and having them send it out for two weeks? Oh, and also I am running Vista, if that means anything.
I've just successfully installed Win7 onto an older but servicable PC in order to use it as a streaming media player in another room. Problem is that although it can see all of the shared files, folders and drives on my main machine it keeps telling me I don't have the correct permissions whenever I click on them - but permissions are set to 'Everyone' and another machine (a netbook) I do the same thing with can see and play everything perfectly... can anyone offer any help or suggestions please, I'm at my wit's end! Thanks in advance!

I have a Fantom Drive 500GB 7200RPM USB 2.0 External Hard Drive - MDU500. The connection for the power cable came loose from the board and nothing I tried could get it to power up. I removed the drives and connected them to a Linux box running Ubuntu 8.04. It saw the two drives as one and even knew the drive name I'd given it. However I cannot get it to mount. The error message in Linux suggests trying SoftRAID or dmraid. Dmraid didn't work. (At least I couldn't get it to.) The message also suggested trying to access the drives in Windows. Windows XP will also see the drive as one unit but wants to format the drive. Can someone provide me some advice or direction in how I might get this drive to a state where I can move my data onto another drive? [more inside]

I'm trying to get all the pertinent documents off of a Gateway 2000 PC running Windows 98 on to a new Dell running Vista Home Premium. The CD drive on the Gateway doesn't work, it has a floppy drive, and the CAT5 cable doesn't fit in the telephone only jacks. I tried to use my USB stick, but it can't find the drivers as it's not connected to the internet. The new computer has no floppy drive, so I can't just put the driver on a floppy. This may be an easy one (at least I hope so - and no, it hasn't been easy for me). Is there a site, or more than one site, that is somewhat devoted to compatibilities in hardware? I'm looking at notebook cdrw/dvd-rom (slim) drives and it would be nice to know which models will - ostensibly, anyway - work with which laptops. Help if you can. Thanks.
Need more hard drive space... am about to buy a 500 or 600 gb external (LaCie) drive and mentioned it to a friend and she said not to go higher than a 320 due to overheating problems. Experienced MeFites, what do you say? Also, being a Firewire person, I have a dumb USB 2.0 question: can they be chained together? Let's say you had a wooden box you wanted to turn into a PC case. Where would you buy a metal 5.25" bay assembly? I'm talking about a U-shaped piece of flat metal that will screw onto the wood box wherein a couple of drives can be mounted. There's just way too much noise in Google on this one. Thanks!
