Another longshot hardware question, but not the wood table kind: I have an OLD Dell PowerEdge 350. I'm running OpenSUSE 10.3. I'd like to monitor system stats like processor temperature and drive status via the normal IPMI drivers. This should be possible; I can get it working on a 1650 using the drivers from Dell's linux website. It doesn't mention the 350 anywhere. Ideas?

It's a laptop, and the manufacturer (HP) only provides Vista drivers. Will the Vista drivers work in Windows XP?
Is there a hardware-equivalent HP system that is the Windows XP version that I can get drivers for to use on this one? It's an HP DV6235NR.

Windows XP does not support (no drivers) an Agfa Snapscan 1212 Scanner because it is operates through the parallel port. Would the scanner work if I purchased a USB to parallel printer cable even though I would have to rely on the Win 98 drivers or is it a lost cause for this scanner.

I’m driving considerably more than I used to, and have noticed an interesting phenomenon as a result. At least once a day, I see a driver coming towards a stop sign, prepared to make a rolling stop, fixated on looking to their right. At the final second, they look to the left and slam the brakes upon seeing an approaching vehicle.
I’d like to figure out why these folks look to the right, instead of the left, which is the lane that will crash into them first. Am I just noticing the bad drivers because they stand out, or there a better explanation?

Sorry to bother people but I'm at my wit’s end and desperate for help.
I've bought a CardBus PCMCIA card with 2x USB2 ports, 1x 1394 firewire 6 pin, 1x 1394 firewire 4 pin for my laptop from eBay.
It was supplied without documentation and a copied CD with USB 2.0 drivers.
I'm running a Dell Latitude C640 with Windows 2000 SP4. I have today updated my BIOS and am running the most recent set. Windows update reports that my OS is fully up to date.
Upon inserting the card Windows auto-detected the device. Inserting USB devices (camera and iPod) doesn't bring them up and interestingly the iPod isn't charging.
After 8 hours of grappling with VIA USB drivers I’ve hit a brick wall. Under USB controllers in the device manger the following are listed:
Standard Universal PCI to USB Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
VIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller
VIA USB Universal Controller
VIA USB Universal Controller
All now appear to have the right driver installed but VIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller lists a Code 10 error saying that it can't start.
I've downloaded the Microsoft USB2.0 hotfix as well as the VIA USB2.0 2.60 drivers all to no avail.
Does anyone have any idea as to what I could do?

On behalf of a friend: "I need to find a driver for a USB fingerprint reader and I'm drawing blanks. We bought this USB fingerprint scanner off eBay - it was made by ST Electronics, which was then sold off to Upek (www.upek.com) so I think that's probably where the confusion stems from. It's an older model, not supported anymore (or at least, the model number appears nowhere on their website anymore, plus the newer drivers fail to work with the scanner).
Model number: TCFC*TCSA1BL\LFE
5.0V 70mA max
is all that's written on the bottom, apart from a white serial number sticker and an "ST Made in Taiwan" transparent sticker. It still looks like this
; the newer UPEK models that look similar are TCRU1C and TCRU2C. So we have a scanner, tales that companies stopped selling them because of driver support, and no trace of them really on the net at all... at least the old model number anyway." Help?

I have a screwed up driver situation on my pc. I've tried everything i can think of, and i need help. it was suggested i look here.
Here's the PbP:
- My DVD player (Sony DDU1621) on my WinXP box wouldn't open. it would just whirr and blink, so i removed it, uninstalled it, and then reinstalled it.
- While I was checking the connections, i accidentally unplugged my harddrive ribbon. I had XP installed on the second drive in a daisy-chain, and when i replugged everything, my computer started up in win98. But my DVD drive worked.
-- The goal here was to install Linux, so i figured i didn't need XP anyway, and while i was downloading the linux iso (onto another box), i set out to totally clean out the harddrive that used to have XP on it, so i could get it ready for Linux.
-- Two hours later, i went to actually begin installing Linux, and suddenly the DVD drive won't open again.
-- I have now physically removed and replaced the DVD drive at least a dozen times. Sometimes the F drive shows up in My Computer, sometimes it doesn't. When it does show up, it still doesn't work (when i click on it it gives me an error alert saying there is a problem with the device).
- When it doesn't show up , i go to Install New Hardware, and it lists Sony Proprietary CD-Rom Controller. When I select it, i get an update window that says 'This device is already installed, but it has a problem.' There are no updates available (i'm not currently online and all of the networking software was installed into XP), and so i just click OK, and nothing has changed.
- I cannot find another driver for this device. I found something listed on DriverGuide, but it was just some batch that callibrates audio and video input.
- I found another DVD drive, this time a cheap one called a MadDog BKM-52X16, and i replaced it. but my win98 device manager doesn't detect it and still brings up the Sony Proprietary CD-Rom Controller as the only option when i run Install New Hardware.
so all i need is to get a cd drive recognized so i can either reinstall xp, or go ahead and install Linux -- both of which, of course, would solve the problem. but so long as i can't read a cd, i can't do either. so i'm stuck.
help would be deeply appreciated.

I finally picked up a USB-to-serial adapter
for my Mac so that I can use the machine as a serial console on my various SPARC boxes and Cisco equipment. After installing the latest drivers
(the IOGear stuff is actually made by ATEN), I've now got a /dev/tty.usbserial0
device. Using ZTerm
, I can talk to my Cisco router, but ZTerm smells/looks very badly like a ported MacOS 9 product. I can't get Taylor UUCP
to compile under Panther (10.3) correctly in order to have tip
, like I use on my Sun boxes.
Any suggestions for good "serial terminal" programs for OS X 10.3? I've already checked VersionTracker
, Google, and all the regular suspect places.
