Recommend an external hard drive? I'm looking for something in the 500GB range, Windows (XP) format, UBS 2.0 or earlier. Thanks!

I am looking for 2T hard drives for external enclosures for my iMac. I'm interested in the Seagate Barracudas http://bit.ly/fhRdh4
We use them at work but there are some pretty bad reviews on newegg which concern me.
Has anyone used these that could comment? And if you have better suggestions please let me know. Thanks.

Let's say I want to buy a new external hard drive. I can pick a case with a particular interface (USB2/USB3/FW400/FW800/eSATA) and a mechanism with certain performance characteristics (RPM, latency, transfer rate, etc). Is there a straightforward heuristic that will tell me "if you're using interface X, don't bother buying a mechanism faster than Y."? [more inside]

I'm looking for the best customer-facing remote backup solution that can back up from my network NAS drive. A lot of the customer-facing solutions like MozyHome don't support the NAS drive. Also I'm wondering...with 1 terabyte to back up, won't it take months to upload?

Is it possible to salvage a hard drive that has been through hell and back? I have a 40gig HD from a few years ago that was inside a computer tower that was ditched in the backyard for a few months, and there was stuff on it when it was pitched. [more inside]

We thank you as do the puppies.

I'm 19 years old, a guy. I was wondering what has happened to my sexual attraction. Typically during the college and high school years in the past, I used to be more sexually attracted to different guys (yes I'm gay).
Right now it's summer break and I spend most of my time at home and not really in the presence of different people. Now when I occasionally go out, I don't seem to have the sexual oomph that I've had in the past.
I do have success with my self, but it doesn't seem as strong as before.
What is it a problem with? Is it low sex drive? Is it that I'm going crazy? Is it that I'm not seeing enough people? Is my attraction limited to types of people and is that normal? I think it is.

So I am soon going to be driving from Tucson, Arizona to Los Angeles, California. The drive is long, and will most likely be boring, So I have come here to metafilter to ask if there are any natural features, roadside attractions, interesting things I can stop and see along my route

I curse when I drive. Terrible language and the most irritated inflection. It needs to stop because I am in danger of linguistically poisoning my toddler. Unfortunately, I live in an area (Metro Boston) where the roads are crowded and people pride themselves on driving like self-centered monsters. Please give me techniques to (most importantly) stop swearing and also stop appearing apoplectic.

Hello! I'm looking for a simple solution to turn my 64GB USB Thumb Drive into a portable MP3 player. Nothing fancy, simple display, controls, and small screen. I have Microsoft Sync in my new car, and a laptop that I travel with. Seems like it would be easy to keep all my mp3s on one thumb drive and take it with me rather than having multiple copies floating about on all devices. There used to be an old Lexar & I believe a Sandisk product that allowed for this. Anyone aware of anything more recent or that supports all 64GB? Thank you in advance.
PS. My USB drive is not one of those fancy encrypted ones, so it works in every device I've tried it in.

I have an old windows 2000 box. I recently used Acronis to clone the primary master drive. I have done this a number of times before with other boxes and even with this box. When i swapped the disks and tried to reboot, BIOS detects the disk ok, but then i get a Primary master disk failure message. So i put back the old drive and I get the same messge! I would be surprised if Acronis did something to both old and new disks during the cloning process. I can access the disk contents fine on other boxes using USB setup. So can the IDE cable have gone bad suddenly. Is it possible the bios detects the disks but cannot find boot information because of faulty IDE cable ?? [more inside]

Windows Vista no longer recognizes my iPhone 3Gs as a drive and I can't sync with iTunes. When I connect the phone it appears in the iTunes sidebar but no longer appears as a drive in Windows. My phone says it's syncing (set to manual, not automatic) but nothing syncs. So far I've tried: changing the USB cable and ports, reinstalling iTunes, hard booting computer and phone, and installing new iPhone driver. Any ideas? Thanks.
