I occasionally like to go out and have a drink or two, read and people watch. What's a good place for me to try in downtown Montreal where I won't have to deal with hassles from being a woman alone in a bar? Bonus: anglo friendly and near Berri.

I can't recall where I once heard this idea, but it seems to hold true in the majority of mainstream American movies that I've seen. The idea is that during the first half hour or so of a movie, a character will drink a refreshing drink. My question is, what kind of agreement or requirement is going on behind the scenes that causes so many movies to have this feature, when it's not an obvious product placement? [more inside]

I'm hosting a Mildred Pierce (the movie, not the series) viewing party on an upcoming summer evening and want to make snacks and a pitcher of summer drinks appropriate to the movie. What should I make? Assume 12ish people coming, 1.5 hours to make drinks and food (+ prep time the night before). [more inside]

I love cocktails, but because of a recent sleeve gastrectomy, I can't have alcohol or carbonation anymore. Still, I'm going to miss the ritual
of chilled drinks in cocktail-friendly glassware with fruity garnishes on a summer day. Recommendations, please. Snowflake: I don't like tomato juice or clam juice.

I'm the kind of person who gets worried enough they'll do their work not well, or make a mistake, that they end up either not starting or working too slowly and filled with dread.
Last week, I had to work late on a project. I had two beers in the process, found I cared less about the anxiety and dread and perfectionism, and just did a better, less stressful job. I want to do this without drinking. [more inside]

In mid-April, Pips and I will be taking a trip to New Orleans. It's our first time and our hotel is on the fringes of the French Quarter. We've been doing research about places to go (and when the time is right we'll call for a MeFi Meetup), but right now I need inside dope. I wanna know about great places for eating and drinking, especially unknown ones. I'm a big foodie and boozie, so I'm up for just about anything. Thanks in advance.

What happens to the drinking water I swallow? All I know is that it goes down my throat to my stomach, and then my body does its thing. Can you go into greater detail for me? For example: What positive effects does the water I drink have on my mouth, my throat, my stomach and other parts of my body? How does the stomach process the water? Where does the water go after my stomach? How does what's in the water get from my stomach to the necessary parts of my body? What's in water that my body needs? What parts of my body benefit the most from the water I drink? Feel free to answer other relevant questions that I've overlooked.

I am obsessed with ginger at the moment in terms of drinks. I love the sharpness and the bite of gingery burn from the spiciness. I have a hot ginger tea/drink recipe NAILED but now I want to make my own ginger drink that is akin to ginger beer but not too alcohol-y. I would also like it to be as natural and inexpensive as possible (ie. no "Soda Stream" or nutsy chemicals or adding pop). Help? [more inside]

I am a big fan of beer in general, but not much of a fan of German beers, in spite of their much-vaunted reputation. This is mostly due to what I perceive as a metallic taste in some of the classics, such as alt bier and dunkelweizen. To me these beers taste like someone took a “regular” beer, dropped a bunch of pennies in it, and stirred it up. This is most noticeable when I’m drinking the beer by itself, but fortunately the metallic taste subsides when I have the beer with food. A few questions about this. 1. Is it just me? Is there some quirk in my palate that makes me taste this metallic flavor and most other people don’t? 2. If other people do taste the metallic notes, why/how do they put up with it or even like it? 3. What is it in the ingredients or the brewing process that produces this flavor?

At a restaurant I ordered a margarita, but when it came it had clearly been made with a mix. It occurred to me that surely there is a word or a way of ordering that indicates you want it mixed classic style - with lime juice, triple sec and tequila, no mix - without having to order in the negative, e.g. "not with a mix." How do I order the drink I want - or can I?

I'll phrase this in a way to avoid legal problems or simple unfairness. I've noticed that certain foods and drinks I buy from The Big Store differ from the same items when I buy them from a Small Store. The items are the same brand with same description on packaging. But they just seem different in how they taste, feel, or spoil. Any insights on how and why this happens? [more inside]

Chum-Churum (19.5% alcohol made from sweet potato with added sugar and hfcs).
Open, unrefrigerated bottle for 24 hours at room temperature, then refrigerated. Safe to drink?
I'm saying it's totally fine. My friend has grave doubts.
