Title and author of a sci fi short story about dream crafting needed

I'm wracking my brains trying to remember the title and author of a science fiction short story to do with dream crafting. I suspect it is either Philip K Dick or Robert Heinlein but cannot pin it down. [more inside]

How do I stay on track with my goals after I have this kid?

How did you find ways to have a great family, and to keep trucking along with what you need to do to fulfill yourself professionally, especially when that professional work is really tough (but rewarding?) In other words, how do I keep myself from just drooling over strollers all day? [more inside]

How can I forgive myself for something I did as a teenager?

When I was 15, I was extremely cruel to a friend and sabotaged our very special relationship. I was crazy and didn't really understand what I had done until college. When I finally "got it" too late, I wrote him a letter to apologize, but he never responded. 10 years later, suddenly the guilt is flooding back again big-time... [more inside]

Why can't I stop thinking/dreaming about my first love?

I'm a 29 y.o female, engaged to a wonderful man who I've been with for almost 3 years. Our relationship has the normal stresses and strains, but I feel like I am authentically 'me' when I am with him, which is what was missing from my prior relationship. Except I still think about that relationship a lot. Especially in my sleep. I'm looking for help on how to reconcile my brain to the fact I'm no longer with someone who I was with for so long. Help me focus less on my fears and more on my dreams.

I'm struggling with a lack of self-confidence and undercurrent of doubt, and hoping that I might be able to shift my attention more towards what I hope for the future than what I fear from it. What are some simple techniques that I can use to gradually move the spotlight over to the positive? Looking for very concrete exercises or practices. Something like: “start each morning writing a vision of what you want.” Would that actually work? I'd think it might just freak me out more, make me feel guilty that I'm not there yet. But something concrete like that. Thanks. [more inside]

Trying to remember a quote about sleep being the greatest reward

Somewhere in the back of my brain there's a memory of a quote I once read, possibly by a Greek philosopher but just as possibly not. The quote was something about sleep (and maybe dreams?) being the greatest reward in life - that the only reason we toil through the day is to "earn" our sleep at night. [more inside]

I can't sleep. I like sleep.

I usually sleep OK. Sometimes I have trouble falling asleep (mind racing, problems at work, etc, etc) but once I'm out, I'm out. I'll wake up once a night maybe to take a leak, but other than that, I'm good. Now, not so much. [more inside]

To Sleep, Perchance to Not Dream

My husband is frequently cranky/off his feed/out of sorts for hours after awakening either in the AM or after our traditional late afternoon nap (we both work from home, have for the past 10 years) and his response whenever I ask "what's wrong?" is usually "I had bad dreams." When he describes his dream it's not necessarily a nightmare, but for some reason it exhausts him mentally. [more inside]

How are British people taught to expect failure and disappointment?

Is it true, what Ricky Gervais says, about how in contrast to Americans and their high hopes, British people are taught to expect disappointment? British people: What life advice along these lines are British people given, that might differ from such U.S. ideas as Back to the Future's "you can do anything if you put your mind to it?"

Movie-like memories

Some of my best memories, when I think back on them, become more cinematic than linear, more musical than factual. They are a flowing montage of events, energy, motion. I am dreaming oddly

As I have gotten older my dreams have gotten less vivid and meaningful. In addition, I don't feel part of them, like they aren't exactly happening to me. Instead I'm watching events as they happen to me, while still retaining some control. The best analogy is like how in many modern video games, there is a scripted plot sequence where your actions are limited but you can still look around at will. Can anyone identify with or explain these phenomena? [more inside]
