Does it become legal to use a person's image without their consent or knowledge, as long as you put a black bar over their eyes and don't use their real name? I cannot afford to talk to a lawyer about this. [more inside]

Does anyone remember kids drawing/painting show from the early 80's hosted by a stereotypical type New England fisherman/sea captain? I remember it being on CBS early on Saturday mornings, 6am or so.

The tale: an ape in a zoo is taught how to draw. The first thing it draws is the bars of its cage. I've heard this story a couple of times (often in connection with Vladimir Nabokov), but can't find any information about the original experiment. Did this actually happen? Is it just a fable? Did Nabokov get Punk'd? Who was this ape and where can I find out more?

Fellow artists, I have drawn in pencil on a 24" x 30" gessoed wood panel. I would like to seal the drawing before painting on top of it. I've thought of spraying it with Damar varnish or coating it with acrylic gloss medium. My goal is to not smear the drawing. I can work in acrylic or oil. Any ideas are welcome.
Thanks!

A while back, a friend of mine introduced me to Kurt Halsey Frederiksen and I immediately fell in love with his work. Since then, I've been on the hunt for artists who have an equally "simple," yet beautiful and eloquent style. Can any of you recommend artists in a similar vein? (Preferably with online galleries or printed books of their art that I could purchase.) [more inside]
