Pool Drainage Question

We have to drain our pool. We moved into a new place, and apparently the water is pretty old. I have a few unresolved issues about this, as I'm not especially handy when it comes to these kinds of things. [more inside]

Reality check re: slow bathtub drain on the third floor

I feel like I'm being gaslighted by my landlord, who is either crazy like a fox or completely idiotic and I can't tell which, and I just want to ask a few really ELEMENTARY questions regarding my slow draining bathtub. Snowflakes? Oh you bet I've got snowflakes. [more inside]

Looking for this exact dish drain/drying rack!

Here are photos of my current dish drain. It's about 13"x18"x10"H when unfolded (ready to use) and ~16"x18"x3"H when folded. I think I got it in the late 90s at, like, a grocery store or something. It was cheap ($5-10). Since it got worn/rusty, I've tried to find a new one, but none of the places I've looked have anything like this anymore. [more inside]

How to unblock the drain that I blocked while unblocking it?

I have the type of bathtub drain that opens and closes from a knob at the side of the tub. This morning, I fished out a lot of hair from the drain with a metal stick. I was very pleased with myself as I turned the water on, expecting it to flow at great speed down the drain. Instead, nothing! [more inside]

Nauseating smell after drain overflow

An old waste pipe in my apartment, that shouldn't have been connected to anything, overflowed earlier this week. The pipe was in the bottom of my interior HVAC closet. I had standing water in the location for slightly over 12 hours. Maintenance came out to repair the pipe and replaced part of it. Now I've got a nauseating smell pervading my downstairs. What could this be from, and what if anything does my landlord need to do about it? More after the cut. [more inside]

Snake It Ourselves, or Call a Professional?

Our basement drain got overwhelmed last night and started bubbling back some black silty water. Should we just call a Roto-Rooter style service, or try and rent a power snake to D.I.Y it? Vinegar+baking soda+hot water+sink drain= hole in metal pipe??????

The bathroom sink drain was clogged, probably with hair. The tenant poured some combination of baking soda, vinegar, and boiling water down it. Shortly afterward the bottom of the metal U-shaped drain pipe beneath the sink in the vanity cabinet developed a hole. The vanity full of useful and not-so-useful items was flooded. Could this combination of ingredients have caused the metal pipe to corrode. I don't know what kind of metal it is.

How can I fix this bath drain plug?

My house came with a plug like this. A few weeks back my wife unscrewed it to remove some hair and now it won't go back. It won't screw to the threads in the drain. It seems like the drain threads are slightly larger than the one in the plug. Maybe some adapter was there that fell into the drain? No idea. I bought another plug from Lowes that looked slightly larger, but it didn't thread. How can I fix this without getting a plumber to visit?

Help me not snake the drain every day

My shower has a flat drain cover that looks like this. I have a lot of hair that of course falls out when I take a shower. I wanted to get a hair catch for the drain to prevent clogs, but all the ones I can find at Home Depot have a little cup which won't work. Also, the drain cover doesn't appear to be easy to remove, as there are no screws on the top (I'm a renter, so I don't want to pry it off or anything). Do you have any ideas of what I can use instead (and how to attach it)? Some kind of mesh that would withstand daily showering?

How wet is too wet for a basement carpet?

The basement floor drain where condensation from my AC unit drains backed up, leading to a minor leak which soaked a small section of carpet (maybe 50 sq feet). I'm guessing it was 4-8 gallons of water total that leaked, and that it had been wet 24-36 hours before we noticed. The back up now is fixed. I've got every fan in the house blowing on the area of carpet. Do I need to do anything else? I'm thinking I don't need professional help given the amount of water and that a few days of the fans blowing in that corner of the basement will dry it out without permanent damage.

My brooklyn tub won't drain and now brown water is coming up!

I live on the top floor of an old apartment building and my shower stopped draining the other day. After trying drano, I upgraded to Pequa last night and its not working. Or it seems like its working, and then it stops. Before, some brownish water came up before it went down. But now that I've poured the last of the Pequa down the drain some really dark rusty water has come up. Is this a good sign? And if I let it sit for an hour or two and flush with warm water I'll be saved? Or do I have to deal with my inept landlord? (Which I'm trying to avoid)

Can't close my bathtub drain.

I am really dumb, and I cannot figure out how to get the stopper back into my bathtub. I live in a new apartment, and I am not used to this style of bathtub stopper. It looks just like this. I pulled it straight out, but when I go to put it back, it doesn't seem to lock on to anything, and I can't get it to sit flat. Is there some trick to these?
