Last year, I bought a $20 synthetic MYSA STRA
(warmth rate 1) comforter from IKEA. It fits perfectly inside my duvet, but it became a lumpy mess the first time it was washed. Granted, I only wash the comforter a few times a year, but still... it's a lumpy mess. I'm tempted to try the down MYSA VETE comforter
, but I'm worried it'll also become a lumpy mess after one wash. I've never owned a down comforter before. Surely some of you own it. I'd appreciate any thoughts. Is it worth $90? [more inside]

Can't take the cold Northeast and wonder if Charleston would work? My husband and I recently moved from Los Angeles to the Eastern shore of Ct. for a variety of reasons mainly cost of living and seeking a closer knit community. Now that we have experienced a cold winter ( it's just starting!) we see that it isn't for us. Weather is a big deal and we thought we could handle it but the being stuck indoors, the layers of clothes, the desire to hibernate are all getting to us pretty quick. [more inside]

I would appreciate any help in finding a ladies quilted down vest in a subdued colour (in Toronto).
My wife has seen the offerings at MEC and several other sportswear chain stores but can't find what she wants. I have a freelance deadline to meet and can't afford to search blindly. Any good prospects between Yorkdale Mall and Queen St. W is good. [more inside]

How do I "read in" my in-laws on my childhood physical/verbal abuse?
My wife's immediate family is very close and I spend a fair amount of time with them (I see some of them weekly and all of them at least once a month). One part of my life that I've only shared with my brother-in-law and his girlfriend (in a very generic way) is that I was sadistically abused by both of my parents for a good portion of my childhood. This has created a barrier between us and while I've only heard whispers about it from my wife, I know they sense that I don't give them much in terms of who I am and what I'm feeling. I've known them throughout my relationship with my wife which started over 16 years ago, so there's a lot of history there.

When do you say 'going down to X' and when do you say 'going up to X' in the context of geography? Do you have a system? For example do you say going up when you going North? For example we are going up to Sydney from Melbourne. Or do you use the rough height of the places? [more inside]

I own this
down alternative comforter. It causes me to wake up with sweaty legs, so I'm looking for a replacement. This
article recommends that people in my situation should go with silk or cotton instead of down. Is there an advantage to do that over just getting a thinner down comforter?
Note: my bedroom ranges from 62-65 at night.

I want something to put at the foot of my bed to keep feet warm - a throw would work, but something more designed for the purpose perhaps- like a giant "sock" that slips over the end of the comforter that you slip your feet into or something like that. down or equivalent preferable, but post whatever you have!

My Wife is pregnant. We just completed the ultrasound test for Down Syndrome.
We had a normal result for Nuchal Translucency (2.5mm for 13 weeks pregnancy).
However the ultrasound did not detect the presence of a nasal bone. We are going for the CVS.
Should I freak out? Does anyone have similar experience and how did it turn out?

Cleaning feather/down - I have several feather or down filled things (pillows, cushions, ski jacket, etc.) that over years have have various liquids spilled *into* them. Liquids like juice, pet urine, beer, gasoline, sweat, etc. (not all on the same item!). My point is these are not surface dirt things - this is stuff that seeps through the cover and into the feathers.
I looking for a way to clean the feathers themselves. Is there a fluid that I can soak - say a cushion - in and it will clean the feathers inside? Or a vapor of some kind ? Or will just soapy water do the job if I can be sure to drying the insides properly? All and any advice please, especially on the pet urine soiled item - it'll have to go if I can't clean it 'deeply'. TIA

So I had a regular sized (full) feather bed, I'm real tall, I thought to take the feathers out of the bed and put them into a king sized duvet and -- Viola! A king sized feather comforter! A good plan. So I bought the duvet, dumped the feathers in, and the thing is warm. But now, feathers large and small are poking through, and poking ME, there's feathers everywhere, I look like a chicken coop landed on me. [more inside]

Down or synthetic? What insulation should I get for our new sleeping bags?
