Mattress Filter: Where to buy a double mattress and/or bed in Montreal? I’m a starving student, and this September I want somewhere comfortable to sleep when I relocate to McGill. I’m not made of money, but metafilter has scary bedbug stories and a $200 Ikea foam job sounds uncomfy.
On the other hand I don't want to be the student who buys a house full of furniture full price, which later needs to be flogged when (s)he relocates in two years.

So, where can I get a comfy bed setup and how much should I expect to pay?

Historical revision filter

After watching BBC Horizon last night (a copy of the Prof. Hebb sensory depreivation experiments of the 60’s) a past thought came back to me. I am fascinated by double (and in the case of Agent Zigzag triple) agents – Philby, Burgess, Ames, Gordievsky…the list goes on and on. I recall reading George Blakes book ‘no other choice’ and remember being profoundly struck by the both psychological and physical torture he received for a period of three years during his captivity in Korea I recall reading George Blakes book ‘No Other Choice’ and remember being profoundly struck by the both psychological and physical torture he received for a period of three years during his captivity in Korea. Blake argued his road to Damascus moment came whilst watching American forces bombing ‘completely defenceless Korean villages’ but after watching this documentary about the effects of sensory deprivation (significant after just 48 hours let alone years), I can’t get this idea out of my mind that George Blake’s so called betrayal was in fact an inevitable consequence of his time in Korea. I have not seen this hypothesis written anywhere else and have felt it since reading the book many years ago. The documentary last night re-ignited my thoughts on this. Reading of the risks and heroism Blake took in the early part of his life I cannot help but feel an injustice has occurred. Has an injustice been done here or am I being oversimplistic in my cause and effect argument?

Help me get to the garden! How can I unlock the patio doors?

In our new house, I can't work out how to get out of the double glazed sliding patio doors. They are locked, and I think I have the key (well, I have a key), but they just won't open. What am I missing? I have always lived in older houses, so am new to the world of double glazing and window locks and patio doors, so I expect I am missing something simple - but here is all the information I have:

These are large sliding double-glazed glass doors. About half way up the left edge of the left door (where it fits the wall) is a fixed sliding door handle (does not turn) with a small lever attached. This lever goes from about -45 degrees to +45 degrees from the horizontal. Below this, at the base of the door, is a metal box with a lock and a small plastic knob which turns but doesn't seem to do anything.

I have a big bunch of keys, and one of these keys, when inserted into the lock, turns about a quarter turn. I have tried both states of the lever with both states of the key (up-vertical, down-vertical; up-turned, down-turned). No luck.

On the right hand door (at the base) is a small box with a light on it. When I touched this box, the light went from green to flashing orange (this, I assume, is something to do with the burglar alarm). The box with the flashing lights does not seem to have any other features. There do not seem to be any other locks or bolts, but I'm not entirely sure what I am looking for. We do not (yet) have a contact number for the people who have just moved out. I know the doors do open, as they were open when I viewed the property.

Any ideas?

manual double-sided printing

I'm looking for a manual duplex printing solution/utility I have an old HP 6MP and I'd like to find a software solution for manual duplexing or double-sided printing. I'm aware of print options in the MS-Word print setup menu that make this possible, but I'd really like something that works across and independently of all my Windows desktop applications. I'd just like to print a wad of paper, flip it upside down, and refeed. I'd rather not go throught the argle-bargle of figuring (or guessing) if page count is odd or even, leaving the last (or is it the first?) page out if odd, remembering to print the odds in order then the evens in reverse and all that stuff. My searches so far only turned up the rather pricey utilities FinePrint and Bookprint which seem to have way more features than I need.

Seeing Double

Double vision, in both eyes. Is it just a side effect of weird astigmatism, or something more serious? This is monocular diplopia, not the two-eyed kind. And it does happen when I'm pretty tired (although that's most of the time, thanks, college!). I happens around reading distance and I'll see the words I'm reading lighter and overlaid about 3/4 of a line down. And so far I think it has happened in both eyes. I went to the eye doctor, and he seemed puzzled by it, and gave me one of those "if it doesn't bother you, ignore it" talks. But is there anything I should be worried about? Eye strain? Something else?

"Mmmmm sounds like my wedding night...."

Who is Jon Stewart impersonating when he does his nasal-voiced, tie-knot-adjusting, eyelids-half-open character? If you're a regular (or even casual) watcher of The Daily Show you know the character/impersonation I'm referring to, as Jon seems to do it almost every show. Here's a video clip from April 9th's episode where he does it, starting at about 1:50 remaining (the video's time display counts down instead of up).

The "character" seems so familiar, but is it based on an actual movie/television persona, or comedian? Or is it just sort of an "archetype" personality, like many of his other characters? (e.g. his "Brooklyn tough guy" accent, his faintly-British-accented waxing-nostalgic "Oh those were heady days indeed" character, etc.)

FirstDateFilter: How do I keep my calm and not turn into a stammering sticky pile of jello? It's been a while since I've been on a real date. By a while, I mean something like three years. I tend to stick to internet relationships as a general rule, because I'm a little afraid of committment- but I met this great guy at my friend's party. Sweet, funny, nerdy, and shy- but the problem is, I am too!

When confronted with something of importance, I tend to turn into a stammering, stuttering, babbling mess- stumbling over my words, talking incessantly about nothing, going off on long tangents, just generally making everyone feel bored and awkward- then once I realize it, I turn about a million shades of pink, but can't seem to calm down and stop. This is going to be a double date with the friend whose party I met him at and her boyfriend (who is his coworker), so the situation will be somewhat alleviated, but I'm not sure just how much.

Please, hive mind- tips on keeping myself composed, keeping on topic, not talking too much, and NOT stuttering and stammering through what I do say? I have a huge girly crush on this guy, and really don't want to mess it up.

Irish rebel fights his own double?

Irishlorefilter: I once heard a brief reference to a fascinating irish legend/tale/fictionalized episode. This was many years ago, back when ask Metafilter didn't exist, so I don't know if everything I say is true or I made it up. - An irish leader / rebel / revolutionary / independentist, etc; (don't know when)
- Probably drunk;
- Maybe in a raft going down by the river? (Liffey?);
- This is the interesting part, he FIGHTS with HIS OWN shadow / double / doppelganger
- Convincing him / her / it that VIOLENCE IS GOOD.

Again, some or many of this details may not be correct, but I think if someone knows that story they will probably recognize it. Is it a song? A novel? A legend? A movie? Does it exist? Please, hive mind, scratch this particular itch of mine!

Excel mindless list jumping

Stop Excel from jumping to end of column when double clicking on cell border Man this is driving me crazy....is there any way of stopping Excel from jumping around when you accidently double click on a cell border, e.g. jumping to end of list when hitting the bottom border, to the top of a list when double-clicking on the top border.

This 'enhancement' is a pain in the ass when you are working on edits to a large list and one wrong double-click brings you to the end of the list whereby you have to find where you were working again.

In the absence of stopping - is there an event handler associated to it that can be macrozied, etc., or a go back to where I was shortcut...thanks!

Studies on double-spacing and readability?

Does anyone know of scientific studies of the readability of double-spaced text? Personally, I find double-spaced text very difficult to read but it seems to be a standard for academic papers and research work. I would like to do what I can to stamp it out, but I can't find anything useful to help make my argument online. I don't know where I might find academic articles on the topic.

Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Film Double Bill Suggestions. I'm putting together a season of double bills of great films. The double bills could be linked by actor, director, cinematographer, editor or genre, or they could be linked thematically - 2 films about childhood/set on a runaway train/sharing a common influence and so on. Anything goes, although both films must appeal to a broad audience, and should be generally recognisable as 'classics' of their type. What 2 films have you always wanted to see together?
