We live in a two-story duplex in Portland, OR. It's a converted single family home with an interior stairway connecting the two units. There's a door at the bottom of the stairway which sort of locks but not really. How do we deal with this? Special snowflake details inside.

On two doors, the door closing mechanism's paint is peeling, and underneath the paint there is a Lockwood sticker. Is this a design feature, an 'easter egg', or what? Photos inside.

I've got Weslock doorknobs in my new house... which I can remove
easily, except for the ones with privacy latches, like the bathroom doors. The privacy latch is a little button on the side of the door with the collar that's supposed to rotate so that you can access the screws underneath it. How do I get it out of my way?

Help! I'm stuck in my bedroom. The knob won't turn much either way and won't come unlatched. The only person who has a key to my house is out of town, so I can't even call a locksmith and have him let in. How can I get out of my bedroom? The door knob is the kind with screws only on the exterior. I've tried to slide a credit card in, but that did not yield results. Anyone have any advice to help me get out of my room?

What is the use of double locks? Not two separate lock, just the kind of lock that you can turn once (which locks the door) and then another time, in the same direction (which locks the door... more?).

When I lock my car with the remote, approx every 1 in 5 times the drivers door doesn't lock. I hear the mechanism activate, but I can see that the little lock handle on the inside of the door only moves halfway. Similar thing happens on unlock. What's going on here and who can fix this - my regular mechanic wasn't able to help.

I have searched online, and been to 2 different hardware stores, including one with an extensive lock collection, and no one seems to have anything available. The door is 2 1/4" thick, and most lock hardware is for doors 1 1/2-1 3/4" thick.
Any suggestions?

I have a home with old school door handles on the bathroom/bedroom doors. It's the push button type lock with no lock on the outside, or even screws on the handle. How would I open this up without breaking down the door?

Is it safe to leave your house key in the lock on the inside of your door? I always do this so I know where my keys are, but I've always wondered if doing so makes it easier for the lock to be bypassed by ill-intentioned citizens. Should I store my keys somewhere else?
