I'm not looking for investment advice or money-savings advice. Pretty much the opposite. I'm looking for ideas of things that I could do with around $1000 - it could be a weekend trip, a premium consumer product, or something that will benefit me for a long time. Snowflake details inside, but really anything that comes to mind would be great! [more inside]

I've been thinking of starting a small, single-serving Web site that offers a very specific service for $10. I was thinking about calling it “Sawbuck [Service]”. How much confidence should I have that the word "sawbuck" will be understood by most casual readers as meaning $10?

Best place to exchange dollars for pounds in London?(debit/credit card not available)
I am flying to London and need to exchange my US dollars into pounds there. I cannot use my credit or debit card to withdraw money from ATMs due to severe government restrictions in my country of origin regarding foreign currency operations. Debit and credit cards issued by all banks at home are at present mostly useless abroad.
If you know where I can get good rates to buy pounds in London, that would be a great help.

A friend, who's as bad at numbers as I am, has money in an American bank account. He needs to pay for something in Switzerland. Is there any advantage to changing the dollars to euros and then to Swiss francs, or is a direct dollar-franc transfer the best way to go? [more inside]

How to get the best conversion rate (GB Pound to US Dollar)?
I've been working in London for the past year, trying to save up money for grad school when I return to the states. I was told that December was the best month of the year to do a GBP to USD conversion (not too sure how accurate that is).
I bank with Barclays (England) and Chase (US) and am in the states at the moment. I've brought the money (in GBP) over because I thought it would give me more conversion options.
I know that it can get complicated with conversion rates changing, various banks with their own exchange rates, etc. I'm willing to open an online bank account if that's the best option to transfer pounds to dollars.
Are there any conversion geniuses out there who can help give me any tips?

I'm looking for an affordable, but still good quality camera to use for nighttime shots. My current camera is a Canon SD1000, which has an incredibly good macro mode, and takes decent pictures otherwise, but the nighttime mode leaves much to be desired. [more inside]

Through my various online transactions I've ended up with a bunch of British Pounds and Australian Dollars in my Paypal account. I could convert these to USD, but the exchange is currently pretty weak, and to make matters worse Paypal uses one that is even weaker by a bout 1.5% on average.
So I was wondering if there's a way around converting this money in order to use it. Can anybody thinking of good ways to spend these GBP or AUD? I was looking through Ebay Australia, particularly for coupons and "e-items" where I wouldn't have to pay any shipping, but couldn't find any. It seems most items along these lines are only posted on Ebay US. Another idea I had was to hire out someone in the UK or Australia to do some graphic design work, but I've had trouble finding any one and am not sure where to look.
