Any advice for training a deaf puppy?

Starting tomorrow, I will be fostering this little guy, a 12-week old dalmatian mix. He's deaf, and I have zero experience working with deaf dogs. As per the rescue group's requirements, I'll be taking him to puppy socialization classes (yay!) but I think the training is going to be up to me. Can anyone offer any advice or suggest resources that might be helpful? Also, I'd love to hear some name suggestions.

Foster Dog with guarding and growling behaviour

I have another foster dog whose circumstances mean I would rather foster her long-term. She's sweet, and generally well-behaved and walks well with my dog. However, she has some pretty extreme guarding behaviour with her bed, bowl and toys. Moreover, she tends to steal my dog's toys and make them hers by dropping them in her dog bed. My dog is calm about it all, but right now I don't dare leave them alone in the same space. Any ideas to work on guarding? [more inside]

Dog suddenly vocal, but only with her sitter. Why?

I have an ideal support system for my rescue dog in the form of a wonder dog-sitter. She walks Huggy every weekday at lunch and when I am away, boards her. They are clearly fond of each other. Last weekend I was away, and the sitter let me know Huggy was starting to act out and be much more vocal with people and other dogs. Not aggressive, just reactive. That change has continued into their daily walks. The dog never acts that way with me. [more inside]

Whine and cry, whine and cry. Repeat.

We have a whiny dog. We've tried everything and don't know what to do. He is 9, maybe older, a Border Collie mix who's probably got trauma in his past (the shelter found him by a dumpster with maggots in his fur), but no current medical problems that our vet was able to find. He has anxiety but takes meds for that. [more inside]

Shutdown for Shelter Dog?

Has anyone else done a "two week shutdown" with their new shelter dog? Although our new pup (35 adorable pounds of dachsund and possible beagle) will whine at the gate to go on a walk, he definitely gets stressed out and intense while we're walking him, and the shutdown would mean that we only let him outside in the yard for the next couple weeks. Would that be too frustrating, or just the relief he needs? [more inside]

My dog is afraid to get in the car...

My dog (seven year old heeler/aussie shepherd mix) is afraid to get in the car. She's a shelter dog who came with some nervous issues (other fears include bathrooms, abandonment, and strange men, especially with hats or beards), but she has made amazing progress over the last year or so... except when it comes to getting in the car! She'll sit outside the open door and tremble, roll over in abject surrender, etc. How can I help her? [more inside]

Now that it's getting colder, I won't be leaving the back door open all the time for the dogs to go in and out. With my Dane, this is not such an issue, but with the Beagles it kind of is. Resources for teaching kids about dogs?

We may find ourselves temporarily caring for an ailing family member's dog. I've had dogs in the past, but never a little dog and the ones I had were being trained as service dogs rather than family pets. I'm looking for books that can help my kid adjust to life with a dog, as well as explain basic training and care principles.

My little scavenger

My sweet pup learned to scavenge to survive as a stray in a rural area with her mom. Now she's up to her ears in kibble and tasty treats, but the allure of dead animals, chicken bones, live bees, and bird poop beats everything out...not to mention the nectar that is dirty pond water! Dog Runs Like Crazy Inside for No Reason

So, we recently moved from a small apartment to a big apartment, about 3x size of the old one. We'd really like him to walk like a civilized beast again, if possible. [more inside]

NewDogOwnerFilter: Is it worth the fight?

I adopted an awesome dog from the local Humane Society. The dog is a one year old German Shepherd who is very well behaved (doesn't chew, rarely barks, never steals even when freshly cooked cheeseburgers are left unattended, etc) and already knows basic commands like "sit" and "come" and "heel." The only problem is the "heel" - he was obviously trained to heel to the left and I really want him to heel to my right. The question: is it worth the effort to retrain him and if so how do I accomplish this? More details and some photos below the fold. [more inside]
