Help me find a dog. I love dogs. The wife does not. She has compromised with me, and said that I can have a dog as long as it is not too big. Big to her means a black lab. I am looking for a dog that can guard the house, bite bad guys whilst walking at night, play with kids, catch a frisbee, and convert my wife to a dog lover. Does such a dog exist in a smaller form factor? Are border collies really as hyper as people say? Hook me up with a K-9.

I have known people that have intentionally 'smoked out' their animals from time to time, and it hasn't seemed to be harmful, but I was just wondering, since it's come up recently.

I'm looking to get a dog in the next month from a shelter / rescue league. I'm wondering:
- How can you tell which one is 'the right one'?
- How can you make sure to pick one that won't snap and eat a baby? (I'm leaning towards puppies/younger to try and combat this, there's a lot of dog fighting and douchebags in Florida.)
- What breeds do you recommend?
- What breeds do you recommend staying away from?
- Without the parents on site, how do you assess if an animal is going to be healthy? (I know the shelters do basic checks, but ... I get really attached to my animals and to have one die prematurely would be really rough) [more inside]

Is it in-humane to keep a dog(s) outside in the yard (with lots of walks, and time spent together outside)?
My wife and I would like to adopt one or two dogs. Because she has pretty significant allergies to dogs, the dog would spend most, if not all of its time outside. That said, we're pretty attentive, caring people and we'll definitely take the dogs on lots of walks and we have a big park right behind our house and we also spend a lot of time in our yard gardening etc so the dog wouldn't be left out there alone. In addition, we plan on either creating a bed in the garage or a dog-house so the dogs could definitely be protected from the elements.
We've talked to a couple of rescue organizations who simply won't allow us to adopt given that the dog will be primarily an outside dog. We both love dogs and believe we can provide a good home.
I'd love to get feedback from others about whether it is in-humane to have dogs be outside, but well taken care of. My father in law argues that, as long as we're getting the dog from the pound, that we'll be giving them a much better life, but I don't want to use that fact just as a cop-out and not provide a good living environment.

My Old English sheepdog has developed a very bad habit of using his snout to pop open the lid of our trash can in the kitchen - and then helping himself to whatever's inside. I've tried scolding him, as have my sisters and my parents. All he does is give us that same goofy-looking, puzzled expression, and then fifteen minutes later he's at it again. He's very well-fed and has more than his fair share of daily dog treats. Putting the trash inside a cabinet is not an option, and we'd really rather not resort to putting it on top of a clean kitchen counter. Help! [more inside]

Can dogs eat beef bones? My dog loves them (the raw discarded sort from butchers or rib joints) but when I give him one he goes crazy, actually consuming the bone and digging into the marrow. It worries me, but I've heard the marrow is good for them. But every time I've given him one I've had to take it away because he just gets too crazy. I know they can't have chicken bones (obviously, ow!) but what are the risks of giving him a beef bone as an occasional primal treat, even if it means he'll likely chew the whole thing up?

My roommate and I adopted a dog about two weeks ago. He's a submissive/excited urinator. When I get home from school, if I so much as look at him, there's pee everywhere. Same thing with scolding--he does something bad, I'm all "no, that was bad," and he's all "okay, have some of my urine!"
I've been told that the best way to deal with this is just to wait, but if there's something to expedite the process, I'm all ears. (More about our training methods inside.)
