Help me think of some out of the box ways to liven up photo updates on doggies I'll be watching for the next 3 weeks, in the style of Dave Engledow. [more inside]
Dear AskMetaFilter, I never thought this would happen to me! My partner and I adopted a terrier mix and we are stumped for a name! (Well, strictly speaking, this isn't true; we each have ideas, but we can't agree.) Your collective wit, whimsy, and wisdom are required within. [more inside]
I think my father would love to have a dog. My mom, however, is allergic, and so getting one that would live with them is not possible. How else can my dad get access to regular doggy goodness without actually having his own dog? [more inside]
Eleven hours ago our 80 pound dog, Oscar, put both his front paws through a small pane of glass in a set of french doors which resulted in lacerations to the "back" of both front legs. Thankfully we were home and reacted quickly by summoning our neighbor who is an exotic pet veterinarian. She was able to wrap up both legs and call ahead to the ER vet. Even with this quick reaction Oscar still lost a lot of blood and did pretty serious damage to one of his legs. The ER vet was able to repair the severed (partially or completely, they did not provide specifics) muscle, tendon and artery and we were able to bring him home about six hours ago. Now what? Week 4 with the new pup. I *think* I'm giving him a great life but sometimes he gives me a look that says 'i want to go back to the shelter, i'm bored and this sucks'. Is this normal as a new pet owner? How can I relax and not stress about being the best. owner. ever? What's a normal 'life with a dog' schedule like? [more inside]

Our Golden has had repeated bouts with gastro infections--one month ago he was treated for clostridium. He was given Metronadozole (2 weeks) and Fortiflora for a full month. Yesterday, he wouldn't eat and temp was 103.6. This morning temp down to 101.5. He is drinking water and will take a few Variety Snaps. Yes, we'll most likely get in to see the vet tomorrow--but this problem with his gut keeps returning. What is the next best step to beat this once and for all?
Help me help my neighbor's dog (and mine) learn to share. [more inside]
I recently started dating someone who has a 4-year old dog (a female terrier mix.) Every time we make out, the dog growls. She's started jumping up on me too. We're not sure how to fix this. The dog has taken obedience classes and seems a bit anxious but otherwise well-behaved. But she's been interrupting activities and freaking out when we hug and/or kiss. Help!
I want to foster a shelter animal...but there are snowflake details and questions... [more inside]
I was walking my dog off leash in a wooded area about an hour ago. From about 100 yards away I saw her playing with and nosing something I assumed to be a dead animal. Yelling "drop it," I headed over to her. She finally dropped it and i saw it indeed was a squirrel -- but not dead, just really sick. The squirrel lay on its side panting heavily while my dog now watched it curiously. My dog could never have caught a healthy squirrel in this woods filled with squirrel-escape-trees, and so I am very sure my dog was playing with an already-sick squirrel that she found lying on the ground. It's super hot and my dog is getting old. Today I soaked her gently with cool hose water. (She doesn't love it but tolerates it well if I am gentle.) I figure it will help her cool off both as the water is running over her and later as the water evaporates. I am reading online that wet dog fur traps heat. What's the real story?
How long can a dog really stay in a parked car? I am new to dog ownership and thoughtless. Today I left my black lab in a parked car for 90 minutes in the sun and 80 degree temperatures with a bowl of water and the windows partly down. Again, no idea what I was thinking. I now understand even fifteen minutes of that was pretty much a death sentence and feel terrible -- except that he seems fine. Is he actually fine? If not, what should I do for him? If so, how did he survive? I won't do it again either way, but I want to know if I should treat him for heat damage and/or better understand what happened.
My neighbor is hassling me about my dog very occasionally peeing/sniffing/rolling on the grass between the sidewalk and the street. This is totally legal, but what can I do to get her to piss off? Yellow snow inside. [more inside]
I have a 9 year old pitbull female. I've owned her all her life and she is very attached to me and other members of my family. She seems to remember some past abuse and is not friendly to strangers, especially men. She did get in a serious fight once, with my son's dog who normally she enjoys playing and swimming with. I bought a very young puppy and... [more inside]

My dog whines incessantly when I leave him alone. Time has passed. I've tried all the things. Dog is otherwise great. It is time for my sweet pup who I otherwise adore to chill out quietly in his kennel so that I can leave the house. What to do? [more inside]
My dog had diarrhea sometime overnight on our (new!!!!) beige carpeting (I've found advice for white). I am about to go to WalMart and Petco to buy whatever I need. What do I need? I want to clean it today so it doesn't set permanently. I'm willing to throw any amount of money at it. I also have a bissell little green proheat deep reach. [more inside]
A week before my former roommate moved out her dog came into heat, resulting in my own ankle biter marking everything he could hike his little leg at. Apparently in his haze of lust he decided that bathing the house in stink would boost his chances of getting a bit of action. Defiled items include the back of my couch, my box spring and the linoleum in the kitchen (where I keep him penned up when I'm out). Also some bedding and other small items I'm comfortable throwing away instead of trying to clean. Next week I'm moving to another property under the same management and hoping to get back most of my deposits (as well as keeping in the landlord's good grace) by getting the house as minty fresh as possible before I turn in the key. I'm looking for some low budget recommendations on getting the stench out. I would prefer they be methods that you've used with success, so if I have further questions I can actually discuss it with someone who has experience with the specific method. [more inside]

I have an 8 yr old American Staffordshire (LAILA), I adopted her at 2 years old (she had a past of abuse/neglect). She is an amazing dog but since I got her when I would leave sometimes she would chew anything in sight ...this behavior stopped finally once I worked with her and she started to become more confident in herself/me. Now, the only time she misbehaves is when another dog is introduced into the picture, and I can't get her to stop. [more inside]

I am going to adopt a dog this summer. One of the dogs that I am considering is currently being treated medically for anxiety. If I adopt him, he will be the first dog I've had who has had this condition. With that in mind, observations and experience addressing any part of this three part question are welcomed: 1) What resources [online, print, or other] might help me better understand dog anxiety? 2) What questions do I need to ask at the shelter to better understand the range and scope of anxiety in this particular dog? 3) What questions do I need to be able to answer of myself before I commit to an anxious dog? My sweet 8 1/2 year old golden retriever has been diagnosed with an aggressive peripheral nerve sheath cancer this week. She can hardly walk on one leg and is on a lot of pain medication and she still is quite uncomfortable. We have been offered palliative radiation as a method of reducing some of her pain, not extending her life. Have you ever chosen palliative radiation for your dog? Was is a good decision for your pet or in hindsight would you have chosen euthanasia instead? [more inside]
When we first got our dog, Brandy, we didn't even know she *could* bark because she never barked. Now that she's come to realize this is her forever home, she's bound and determined to let everyone and anyone know it, so she barks at everything. [more inside]
My wife and I have talked of adopting a dog for a while. Following the untimely passing of one of our cats, this is more feasible, and could help console us. But we have questions for adopting a dog in our desert climate, and on dogs coming into a family with a baby, and a cat. And we're concerned about being good owners, as our time at home is limited during the week. Also, we're discussing what a good age range for an adoptable dog would be. Details inside. [more inside]
Our dog, Apple who you might remember from some other puggle-problem questions- is doing really well. She no longer shows signs of separation anxiety and we've even got her to stop barking hello when we walk in the door. But for the first time in her little life with us- I will be transitioning from working at home to working at an office full time. Poor little apple will be alone for a good seven hours five days a week. So what do we do to make it easier on her? [more inside]
I have a 5 month old lab mix, about 22 lbs. Yesterday I sprayed some weed on our porch with RoundUp, and my SO went through and weedeated afterward, but failed to sweep remanents of weeds that were scattered out all crime scene like. This morning took puppy out for walk and he IMMEDIATELY grabs something off the porch and eats it. All of the pieces scattered were probably smaller than a thumb print, but he swallowed it before I could get to him. [more inside]
I adopted a three year old Chiweenie from a couple unable to keep her. The dog seems to have lost her potty training. The couple said she was fine with it, she goes to the door to be let out... But absolutely refuses to use the bathroom outside. Help! [more inside]
So, we recently moved from a small apartment to a big apartment, about 3x size of the old one. Tiny dog has adjusted well, except for one thing: he runs around the house, to get from Point A to Point B. Walking no longer occurs. We'd really like him to walk like a civilized beast again, if possible. [more inside]
My dog generally loves people, though she's usually a bit shy at first. Normally, when we have people come over, she has a chance to warm up to them and is their best friend in no time. However, we're having an upstairs bathroom remodeled, she's having a hard time with it (the noise and strangers), and is subsequently barking a lot. I have considered some of the anti-bark products (citronella, ultrasonic), but since I suspect this is fear-based barking, I don't want to encourage her to be even more fearful. We are especially motivated, because we're expecting a baby in 10 weeks or so, and we don't want her waking him/her up every time something goes bump. Does anyone have any tips or tricks that could make things better? Thanks, MeFi! [more inside]
Looking for new chew treat/toy options for my puppy. Snowflake details inside. [more inside]
I recently adopted a rescued terrier mix, about 3.5 years old, and she's a bit of a snowflake - loyal, intelligent and sweet but also previously abused, lived on the street, quick to fear, and absolutely terrified of other dogs. Love, fresh air and positive reinforcement training have been mellowing her out over the few months I've had her, but she needs to be spayed, and I'm worried about the effect it'll have on her. My vet keeps post-op dogs together in a room, and they told me she'd be so zonked on drugs that it wouldn't be a problem. I'm not so sure. Are there vets that have private rooms or areas for dogs after surgery? Does anyone have experience with this kind of situation? I'm in Southern California, and the dog licensing law does require that she gets spayed.
I super love my 4-year old German Shepherd, but his desire to work/have a purpose has not waned with age, and I feel like he would be so much happier in life if I could help him find that purpose. His favorite thing on earth is playing fetch, but I know I can give him more than that. Suggestions? [more inside]

I have some problems with a couple of dog training efforts: discouraging snapping at treats (but she doesn't always snap), and how to train "drop it," when she's not typically interested in holding something in her mouth to drop. I'd love some ideas on these two problems. [more inside]
