Recommendations for dog books seem a common request here, but this one is going to be a little bit more specific: I'm after a kind of dog book that involves a person getting a dog for the first time, only in their adult life. Meaning, they didn't grow up with dogs, or didn't have any meaningful experiences with dogs as a child, but as an adult, from a cold start, got a dog. Examples - My Dog Tulip, he gets the first dog of his life, the dog who changes his whole life, in his 50s. Dog Man - The guy who was instrumental in saving the Akita breed from extinction, got his first dog only in his 30s. Counter-examples - Marley & Me, they both had dogs as kids. [more inside]

Our 8 year old Maltese dog eats twice a day: a main amount at 7:30AM and a smaller amount at 6:30PM. We recently got an automatic feeder so we don't get pawed awake in the morning. For the first few days it was fine, but now he barks at the feeder every morning when the food comes out. Once I go into the kitchen and nudge him near it, he stops barking and eats all his food. At night, with the same food and feeder, he doesn't have an issue. Any ideas?
I took my dog to vet to get his teeth cleaned today. They saw a very obvious bump on his nose that I hadn't noticed before, told me to see a specialist ASAP, and the dental cleaning did not happen. And then I cried in the car for twenty minutes. Obviously, I'm not asking for a diagnosis via Metafilter, but how can I negotiate/maneuver with veterinary costs? [more inside]

My husband and I adopted a shelter dog last week, who we absolutely adore. When we were looking at her I asked one of the workers if they knew what kind of dog she was and they said no....just a mutt. My curiosity is getting the best of me though, and I would like to see if anyone might have some insight into what kind of breeds she might be. Pictures are here 3 photos included and she is the bigger dog in photo 1. She's about 2 years old so I'm assuming she's fully grown, also slightly under weight. As for her height, her head is about hip height (I'm 5'5"). So please someone satisfy my curiosity about our newest baby and tell me what kind of pup could she be?
We just adopted a dog and and are looking for a good dog walker in Cambridge, MA to take out him out four times a week. We're new to the area and don't know other dog owners who could recommend someone, so we're at the mercy of Yelp. We live in the Inman Square neighborhood of Cambridge. Any suggestions would be very welcome!
My puppy does not want to go through the door at doggy day care. Is there any likely explanation other than she just doesn't want to go there? [more inside]

I just hired a dog walker this week... and it just occurred to me today: am I supposed to be tipping? And if so, how? The weekly bill is $60; am I supposed to leave a couple of bucks a day, or could I leave $10 or $12 at the end of the week or something? Or is it more of a holiday bonus thing (in which case I feel kind of bad, because the holidays are a year away). Some days, the owner of the business will walk my dog. Is it like a salon where you're not supposed to tip the owner, just employees? Or am I totally over thinking this, and is dog walking not a tipping sort of service?
Please to give me your best dog jokes. Thanks!
My wife and I have a corgi/heeler mix who will be two years old in May. She's an absolute sweetheart most of the time but gets into foul moods occasionally where she will snarl and bite. Once she's in a bad mood she tends to stay that way for a few hours. How can we correct that behavior? [more inside]
I'd like to help my mom get a new dog. In the past she had a lab and then a pointer, loved them both to death, but this sort of dog is just too big and requires too much exercise for a 70-year-old woman living alone. Trouble is: she hates most small dog breeds - doesn't like the lap dog type or the Paris Hilton type dogs. I tried to convince her a Boston Terrier would be a good compromise, but she doesn't like the pointy ears and the bug eyes. [more inside]

My little dog seems to have an ear infection -- head tilting, ear-scratching, ear-shaking, general sadness. She has a vet appointment Saturday, for an unrelated follow-up, and I will tell the vet about it then. In the meantime, would it hurt her to give her some of the miconosol eardrops (1%) I have left over from when this happened before? [more inside]
How do I keep my puppy entertained on a rainy day? My 6&1/2 old puppy (see this previous post) has turned out to be ... rather interesting. She is not particularly high-energy and doesn't seem to take much joy in long walks. She is, however, really interested in romping and socializing with other dogs. [more inside]

Our 30 lb dog beast has torn (or ruptured) his ACL. He has a host of other medical issues, but the vet has put him on pain meds (he was already on an anti-inflammatory) and wants to see how he does by the end of two weeks. Because it's a common problem, I was hoping you folks might have some tips to make him as comfortable as possible. [more inside]

What advice do you have for raising a happy, healthy and sane Australian Cattle Dog? We just adopted an 5 & 1/2 month old ACD/mixed breed puppy from a shelter and for the most part, she is a dream come true. She does have many of the less-pleasant but totally normal puppy behaviors like mouthing/biting when playing. We were told that she is a little socially delayed because she had diarrhea when she was transfered in from a high-kill shelter a few weeks ago. Treating the diarrhea threw off her vaccination & spay schedule, so she hasn't had much of a chance to socialize with other dogs and people until now. [more inside]

I am looking to adopt a dog, but first I want more information. I live in Seattle. I'd love to find a dog group/dog place where I can go, ask questions, maybe even get to know some different dogs, but I've lived in Seattle for more than 20 years and I've seen how ridiculous, make-PETA-look-sane, over the top animal people here can be. Is there a dog place/group in Seattle that is kind to people? [more inside]
