My husband and I are adding another dog to our family. Yay! He's a rescued coonhound/great dane mix, about 18 months old. We couldn't be more excited to bring this awkward, gangly guy into our home. But what should we feed him? [more inside]
I'm vaguely remembering a movie, maybe a made-for-tv movie. The plot involved a kid, I think a boy, coming to live with relatives (?) Maybe he was a foster kid, or maybe the adults he was to live with were his grandparents. The kid wants a dog. Wilford Brimley, I believe, was the irascible grandfather with a heart of gold. Can you recommend a plush squeaker toy for dogs that's durable? [more inside]
I have a good friend who wants a dog. Here is the criteria. We are looking for ways/places to go check out/ideas on how to find a dog for her: -My friend lives in Northern California, and is willing to travel a reasonable distance (50 miles give or take). She is willing to pay adoption fees. The dog: -Must be male. -Can be of any breed/mix. -Must be young to adult, but not a puppy. -Must be medium to large in size. -Must have all shots/vaccines. -Must be neutered. -Must be a rescue dog. Help us find places to look around for rescue dogs. We have been striking out... maybe there's some places we aren't finding/thinking of besides the pound, pet shops, rescue agencies, etc?
My new dog seems to have a problem with her anal glands. Which is now my problem. [more inside]
What can I do to make my home "dog-proof" for the new 18-month-old dog I'm getting from a shelter? And what can I do to ease the trauma for him of moving to a completely new home? [more inside]
We adopted a three-year-old special-needs pooch from the pound. We thought he was a rottweiler at the time, but now we don't know. We love him and want to know more about his provenance so we can train him better. (pics provided) [more inside]
My dog is allergic to a lot of things (39 out of 54 in her allergy test), some of her worst reactions were to several types of very common grasses and her own yeast. The doctor recommends allergen immunotherapy -- exposing her to low levels of the allergens to increase her tolerance to them over time. It is expensive and it takes a while -- about $1,200 over about 1 year. I would love to hear about people's (and their dogs') experiences about this therapy to get a better sense of its efficacy and safety. How well did it work? Were there any side effects? [more inside]

What is the maximum duration a dog can be left alone in his locked crate? I've been maxing it out at 3 hours (and I still feel terrible) and wondering if on the odd occasion I can push that to 4 or 5 or if that's really not a nice thing to do. [more inside]
My dog is a kleptomaniac. Anything left in his reach he will steal and chew on and hide. Paper goods, remote controls, anything. He's a freaking 5 lb Chihuahua but nothing is safe if he can reach it or climb to it. After 3 years of being terrorized by his ways I'm wondering if there's any training that can make it so we can trust him to have free reign of the house. [more inside]
Friend rescued a five-year-old sick Labrador from the streets and adopted him, but he absolutely hates water and can't be bathed because of this. What can we do to get him over his fear? [more inside]
One of my family members was just bitten by a neighbor's dog on a walk. The family member is elderly with a baby, doesn't speak the best English. The dog is not large, but did bite the elderly lady's leg and scared them half to death (she already thinks they have a weak heart...). Apparently the woman owner did not run to get the dog but just called him. The baby was scared too. I'm going to go home and try to take a picture of the bite. What's the next step? Police? Animal control? Even if just talking to them, I need to know my options. [more inside]
My husband and I are in the process of adopting a dog. Based on online profiles and email conversations with foster families, we've got it narrowed down to two pups that have been fostered through two local rescue groups. Now we are scheduling in-person meetings with the dogs and "home visits" where they send a volunteer to make sure our house is ok for a dog. Should we be telling each group that we are deciding between two dogs, which we're meeting on Thursday and Friday? [more inside]
I want to go backpacking in Minnesota or western Wisconsin this weekend. Where should I go? [more inside]
We are considering adoption of a dog who was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Seeking advice from people who have experience caring for a dog with IBD. I am concerned about: Scavenging. We live in a dense suburban neighborhood with no fenced area. Doggie gets walked 4 times a day. As hard as I try, he grabs mysterious food items off the ground. Sometimes I can pry the food away from him. Scavenged food is bad for IBD maintenance. Progression of the disease. Can dogs live normal healthy lives with IBD? Or is it a string of crises? Our last dog had a serious heart condition. He lived a long, reasonably comfortable life. But it was costly, time-consuming, and we worried a lot. We grew attached to this dog before we knew about the IBD. I wonder if we should decline to adopt him. [more inside]
Which ultrasonic toothbrush has the least noise and vibration? This is for my 12-lb dog, who has a correspondingly small head. He's already great about letting me brush with a manual toothbrush, which I do nightly, but still had some periodontal pockets at his recent dental cleaning. I think I can get him to accept an ultrasonic one if I introduce it very gradually, but I want to get the gentlest one possible. Related issues inside. [more inside]
My sister is taking home a new puppy from a breeder who feeds her dogs raw meat purchased from a local butcher. Sis does not want to continue this practice but is concerned the transition to commercial dog food might be hard on the pup. Does anyone have advice for weaning the dog from raw to conventional dog food without causing significant distress?

I volunteer with a rescue group that fosters and adopts out tiny dogs. I am looking for someplace that will custom-print either a collar or a pet bandana with the group's logo, so it's similar to the"adopt me" signs that many adoption groups use. Likely I'm going to want less than a few hundred, which seems to be below the radar for most commercial outfits. Any suggestions for a company that might do that without costing an absolute fortune?
I'm about to break up with my girlfriend of two years who I live with. We've had intermittent fights of me not being happy where it was going. The latest one happened just last week, the day before we picked up two dogs. She's going to keep the dogs (hard decision for me) if we break up, but what can I do to help? I feeling like I'm abandoning her with kids we just had. [more inside]
My small dog loves squeaky tennis balls and will chase them incessantly, morning and night. However, he is also quite adept at de-squeaking these toys, sometimes within minutes. While he does continue to play with the balls after they have lost their sound, these are far less alluring. As neither my budget nor my house has room for the infinite supply of fresh squeaky balls he desires, I seek to re-squeak these balls with fresh squeakers and some super glue. [more inside]

I live with a person who has a dog that I like quit a bit. She's really friendly, well mannered, not many complaints. Another roomie moved in about 2 months ago with her own dog. Ever since moving in both dogs fight constantly. I don't know if you can assign fault, but the new dog often does a thing where it will bite at the old dog's neck until it responds. The old dog will sometimes steal food and chew toys from the new dog. This is nearly always play fighting, but sometimes they get carried away and seem to want to harm the other. If I'm home by myself yelling "Hey, assholes, stop it!" is enough to get them to stop for the rest of the day, and I can usually give a loud "Hey!" if I see them doing things that lead up to fighting. However, both other owners have a harder time getting them apart, and sometimes do things I think are counter productive. I don't want to tell them how to control their dogs, but it's really tiring to be living in the constant center of a dog fight. Should I take more active steps to discipline them while the owners are around, or should I just say "well, not my dog," and not intervene? [more inside]

Eleven hours ago our 80 pound dog, Oscar, put both his front paws through a small pane of glass in a set of french doors which resulted in lacerations to the "back" of both front legs. Thankfully we were home and reacted quickly by summoning our neighbor who is an exotic pet veterinarian. She was able to wrap up both legs and call ahead to the ER vet. Even with this quick reaction Oscar still lost a lot of blood and did pretty serious damage to one of his legs. The ER vet was able to repair the severed (partially or completely, they did not provide specifics) muscle, tendon and artery and we were able to bring him home about six hours ago. Now what? Week 4 with the new pup. I *think* I'm giving him a great life but sometimes he gives me a look that says 'i want to go back to the shelter, i'm bored and this sucks'. Is this normal as a new pet owner? How can I relax and not stress about being the best. owner. ever? What's a normal 'life with a dog' schedule like? [more inside]

Our Golden has had repeated bouts with gastro infections--one month ago he was treated for clostridium. He was given Metronadozole (2 weeks) and Fortiflora for a full month. Yesterday, he wouldn't eat and temp was 103.6. This morning temp down to 101.5. He is drinking water and will take a few Variety Snaps. Yes, we'll most likely get in to see the vet tomorrow--but this problem with his gut keeps returning. What is the next best step to beat this once and for all?

I recently started dating someone who has a 4-year old dog (a female terrier mix.) Every time we make out, the dog growls. She's started jumping up on me too. We're not sure how to fix this. The dog has taken obedience classes and seems a bit anxious but otherwise well-behaved. But she's been interrupting activities and freaking out when we hug and/or kiss. Help!

I was walking my dog off leash in a wooded area about an hour ago. From about 100 yards away I saw her playing with and nosing something I assumed to be a dead animal. Yelling "drop it," I headed over to her. She finally dropped it and i saw it indeed was a squirrel -- but not dead, just really sick. The squirrel lay on its side panting heavily while my dog now watched it curiously. My dog could never have caught a healthy squirrel in this woods filled with squirrel-escape-trees, and so I am very sure my dog was playing with an already-sick squirrel that she found lying on the ground. It's super hot and my dog is getting old. Today I soaked her gently with cool hose water. (She doesn't love it but tolerates it well if I am gentle.) I figure it will help her cool off both as the water is running over her and later as the water evaporates. I am reading online that wet dog fur traps heat. What's the real story?
