What are some good online sources for pet medicine? Medicine from my vet is expensive, and I want to get the best price without sacrificing quality, service, or my dog's health. [more inside]

I know you ANAV, and even if you are, you ANMV. Which is exactly the point, because I'm not sure if my vet has this diagnosis right. [more inside]

I heard that you can send a sample of your dog's DNA out to be tested to determine breed. I have a pound mutt who I would love to know the mix before she passes. Anyone know if such a service exists?

Is there such a thing as a dog harness that a dog cannot chew through, or is unlikely to physically chew through? I am not interested in answers regarding repellants such as bitter apple--I already know about them. [more inside]

My dog licks himself --a lot. The Vet suggested a very expensive (and possibly inconclusive) allergy test. Before spending $700-1000 so the Vet can tell me she has no idea I thought I would consult the hive mind. [more inside]

Why does my dog have a fear of storm drain openings along curbs and gutters? I have a small (10 lb) dog who absolutely will not walk past a gaping storm drain. On our walks, every time we encounter a drain, I have to pick her up and carry her past. Any ideas why she has this fear, and any suggestions on how to cure her of it?

In the BBC show Hustle
, series 2, the gang stays at a hotel in London decorated with huge dog portraits. They're straight on, un-ironic portraits of dog faces. They're fabulous. Does anyone know who painted them?

As usual, we skipped spring here in Texas and went straight to what my Yankee self considers summer. And with summer in Texas comes bugs -- fire ants, chinch bugs, and all kids of other assortments of creepie crawlies. Normally I'd simply diazinon the entire yard and just fuhgetabout it, but this year -- I have a puppy. A puppy that likes eating digging in dirt and rubbing her nose in it. [more inside]

Bringing Pets in Airplane Cabin: I know that each airline has its limits on the dimensions of the under-the-seat carrier and combined weight, but how strict are they? Do airlines actually measure your carrier and weigh the pet plus carrier? Or just eyeball it? I'm wondering particularly about Northwest and American Airlines. Any horror stories or warnings appreciated.

A tick dug its foul way into my dog's belly yesterday. We found it dug in but not yet engorged in the middle of an irritated red patch of skin. I tugged 2/3 of of it out of my dog's skin, but despite my best efforts, the head's still in there. What now? [more inside]

Mrs. Lester played Laura Mirsch's essay called 'The Dog Who Loved to Suck on Toads
' for the first time last night. It's a great piece, but my bullshit detector went off immediately. How likely is this to actually happen? Have any dog owning mefis had had problems with dogs being addicted to other substances?

My mother's dog (part of our family for 10 years) passed away last night of major sudden medical problems. My mother is in her late 50s, divorced, and lives alone - and considered the dog practically one of her children. How can I help her through this better?
