Smelling-Nose Dog?

My fiancee and I are both anosmic. We've joked about needing a smelling-nose dog, but is that possible? Could you train a dog to recognize and alert you to certain smells? If so, how? [more inside]

Optimal dog walk: vary route or not?

I walk my eight-year-old boxer every day. I vary the route among a set of 4 or 5 possibilities--different directions, incline, etc. I do this a) because I like variety and b) I have been assuming the dog likes variety, too. Is that true? Or does a dog prefer, for some reason, to stick to one familiar route?

When Dogs Attack

My dog and I were viciously attacked Wednesday at a place of business. The dog is owned by an intern of the business. She has a new puppy and was unrestrained and had no collar (which made it difficult to control her). I was going to let it slide, but they have been less than friendly and take no responsibility for the attack. [more inside]

Yellow snow etiquette?

Yellow snow etiquette? It's my dog's first winter in a snowy clime. I always scoop poop, of course, but what is the etiquette for cleaning up the yellow snow? I usually try to cover it up with a little fresh snow, but it still seems gross to me.

How to help a cranky cat get used to the dog?

(Pet harmony filter) A little over 3 months ago, we adopted Phoebe, an 18-month old poodle/bichon cross. She's a fantastic dog, very well behaved, perfectly lovable and playful and awesome in every way, and we adore her. We also have 4 cats, 3 of which have settled down and seem to have gotten used her. But not Phil. Phil hates Phoebe with white-hot kitty hate. And it's breaking my heart. [more inside]

I'd like some tips on clicker training my new dog.

Help stop my dog's pee colonization on my carpet.

I've read related posts on AskMeFi several times, as I've dealt with this before. I know there's something I'm missing. My dog pees in the house, albeit infrequently...except when she's peed in the house recently. I clean up the spots using Nature's Miracle (now Petastic). I do things to discourage her from peeing again near that area (blocking it off, putting her food nearby, etc.). She pees again in close proximity, but not at exactly the same spot. So, what do I do? Un-crate our dog?

I have a bichon frise/shih tzu mix dog named Beatrix who is a little over 1 year old. She is crate trained and has no problem with going into the crate when my husband leaves for work. She spends no more than 5 hours in the crate a day while we are at work. Next week my husband's work hours will be changing and this will mean that Beatrix will be at home for 8 hours alone while we are at work. Unfortunately we cannot afford to hire a dog walker. We are thinking about leaving her out of the crate since it seems like a significantly longer time to keep her cooped up. Is this the best thing to do? If so, how should we go about it? [more inside]

Yes, I cook for my dog. How can I do it better?

I'd like nutritional advice for homemade dog food and maybe treats, using easy-to-find ingredients. Our big old dog is becoming incontinent -- How can we all be happy together?

My 11 year old male shepherd-mix is in congestive heart failure, but doing very well on medicine. He has a good outlook for many months of high quality living. The diuretic medicine causes him to pee in the house occasionally -- because I can't get him out the door fast enough. We live in a condo and he has to go out on leash. We can't leave the house for more than a couple hours or he will need to pee. I welcome any tips on managing incontinence for large male dogs. [more inside]

Is there a canine version of Feliway?

There's a miserable yapping barking dog right behind the front door of the apartment across the hall, and it's driving me mental. Rather than deal with the skeevy-looking tenants at 12:30 AM I just want the dog to go bark elsewhere in their apartment. If it were a cat I'd spray a little Feliway under their door... is there something I can spray under there that will make that dog avoid the area?
