Citronella Collar: Can I refill it with water?

I have a Coon Hound and she barks a LOT. Pretty much on a constant basis. She has gotten much better about barking, but my husband and I are fixing to move and when we are gone we have been told that she howls/barks/cries the ENTIRE time we are gone. I have been looking at Citronella Collars, but before I opt into buying one I need to know if I can refill it with water. [more inside]

Grass, the natural prey of the miniature poodle.

We had a new grass lawn put in at the start of the year. Before long, it had developed yellow spots: pic 1, pic 2. A suspect has been brought in for questioning. She did not confess, only licking the detective on advise of counsel. Two questions: 1) Is she likely the real culprit? 2) What remedies are available? If it is her, I'd like to note that the whole point of the lawn was so that she could do her business out there. We'll get her a potty pad and encourage her not to go on the grass, but I'm doubtful that she'll always go where we want. [more inside]

Tough decisions regarding my dog

I adopted a dog a few years ago and now I'm considering the possibility of giving her up. I feel awful about it and I'm not sure what to do. Good reason for doing it: starting med school. Not sure if it's a good or bad reason: Boyfriend hates her. Really long, but if you can handle it, I'd love some insight. [more inside]

Puppy, oh puppy...

Help my fiance and I come to a compromise on when to get a puppy. I have grown up with dogs- he was never allowed to have one growing up. I had a puppy of my own for 10 years until she passed away last October only a month in to our relationship- so he never got to know her. We recently moved into a small house with a large fenced in back yard. We have 3 cats. He says the house will be too crowded with a dog. I don't think so. [more inside]

Good dog or bad dog ?

Good dog or bad dog? I think know that it's good to praise a dog for the behavior you want (good dog) and scold it for behavior you don't want (bad dog!). Help me with this please dog-whisperers ... I let 3 dogs out of the house at late late night at night for a few minutes for a last chance to relieve themselves. They have a multi-acre space to run in. When I call them, two of the 3 come back immediately. The third (always the same dog) does not. [more inside]

How can I fix my driveway gate so my dog cannot escape under it?

Our driveway is on a very small incline. At the bottom of the driveway, which exits onto the street, is a gate attached to our fence. The gate swings inwards, so when the gate is closed, there is a small gap at the bottom to accommodate the incline when it's fully open. Our dog can escape out of this gap. Other than plugging it with a long piece of scrap wood while we're out with him, how can we solve this problem? [more inside]

NewDogOwnerFilter: Is it worth the fight?

I adopted an awesome dog from the local Humane Society. The dog is a one year old German Shepherd who is very well behaved (doesn't chew, rarely barks, never steals even when freshly cooked cheeseburgers are left unattended, etc) and already knows basic commands like "sit" and "come" and "heel." The only problem is the "heel" - he was obviously trained to heel to the left and I really want him to heel to my right. The question: is it worth the effort to retrain him and if so how do I accomplish this? More details and some photos below the fold. [more inside]

Ruf ruff sorry about my dog....

What's the best way to get a dog to stop barking at people? We have a three year old mini poodle rescue. I don't know if she was abused but she definitely wasn't socialized. We had her a year and a half and we've worked through a lot of issues (house training, fear, and severe separation anxiety) but the barking is the one issue we have never been able to fix. She's easily spooked by people and she barks if they even look at her let alone walk near her or reach for her. In our house she has actually chased house guests down the hall barking and circling. My husband and I are both able to bring her to our workplaces but the constant barking makes it difficult to do so. [more inside]

The Odd Couple

I have a little female dog (10 lbs, about a year old) and a slightly larger male dog (20 lbs, about 3 years old). The female wants to play with the male most of the time. The male has grown to ignore her other than maybe once a day, if that, when they have a chase/wrestling session. We've had them both for about two months, adopted separately. [more inside]

You don't hear this one every day.

I'd like to add a kitten to the family. However, I have a toy fox terrier which makes this difficult. Every cat I've had in the past would eventually begin stalking the dog, pawing him on his hindquarters and biting his neck. The dog would cower 24/7 and I ultimately needed to keep them in separate areas of the house, at all times, to protect him. I've tried various methods to prevent this, but since the last time I've owned a cat was over five years ago I'm open to re-trying anything.
