Recommendations for dog books seem a common request here, but this one is going to be a little bit more specific:
I'm after a kind of dog book that involves a person getting a dog for the first time, only in their adult life. Meaning, they didn't grow up with dogs, or didn't have any meaningful experiences with dogs as a child, but
as an adult, from a cold start, got a dog. Examples -
My Dog Tulip, he gets the first dog of his life, the dog who changes his whole life, in his 50s.
Dog Man - The guy who was instrumental in saving the Akita breed from extinction, got his first dog only in his 30s. Counter-examples - Marley & Me, they both had dogs as kids.

Tell me your experiences getting over fear or discomfort with dogs. My wonderful brother, bless him, loves me, but fears dogs. But now I'm getting a second one (German Shepherd puppy), the breed of his nightmares, and he is struggling. He's told me himself he wants to get over it, and I'm sure exposure and puppies will help, but I'd love to hear your own experiences and anecdotes getting past this.

My dog is an incredibly vocal dog, in play. He growls like he crazy with humans playing tuggy or rough-housing, with other dogs he meets who he wants to play with or is playing with. It all sounds so fierce but it's not, he's just being playful (he's nearly 3). How do I deal with this on walks, when other dogs don't always figure out the playful part straight away, and other owners who basically call me a liar when I assure them he's friendly?

Recently I got a dog. He's doing great, I'm doing great, it's been nearly 3 months since I got him from the shelter. Problem: He's meeting my brother and his kids, in a few weeks (family reunion weekend), and my brother has a strong fear, maybe even a phobia of dogs. What can I do to put him at ease, navigate the situation and help everyone get through this unscathed?

New neighbour, new dog. Dog was home alone today(indoors), barking and howling, for the first time. Doesn't bother me one bit but I caught another neighbour outside, on the phone to the RSPCA (which seems an insane overreaction), to report this situation. What to do? How to help both neighbours and the dog be happy?

Help me find consensus from the hive mind. I have been wanting and preparing and planning to get my very own dog, my first dog, for years. However the question that keeps raising its head, is should I, given my personal circumstances?
