This is my dog and I have some dumb questions. I had dumb questions in this post too, but now I have more of them. [more inside]
Help me remember the name of a children's book about a dog. [more inside]
I don't have a car, and I want to adopt a dog. How can that work? Can I handle having a medium-size dog? [more inside]
So I've been asking about dog ownership, and got advice here (among other places) which led me to sign up to foster a dog. This is Huggy, my 5 year old foster mutt (though she's clearly got quite a bit of Rottie in her). She has a host of problems and she will be with me for a while. As a result, I have a host of questions. Can you answer some of them? (You are not my vet-- I have a good vet. ) [more inside]
Our dear girl is 15+ years old, 50lbs, and becoming pickier every day. She just won't eat what we've been giving her anymore, she changes her mind every day, and we know we need to aim for low protein. Most of the time now she turns her nose up at just about everything except people food. We are OK with that, but please help us be creative. [more inside]
My wife and I have had Sally, a 7 year-old rescue for about two months now (Requisite picture). About a month ago we wanted her to be able to get a little more activity, so we hired a dog walker. He's been great - he clearly loves her, and she seemed to like him as well. There were no problems at all until last Thursday, when she suddenly wouldn't go outside with him anymore, and snapped at him when he tried to leash her up. [more inside]
My 11 year old Westie has been drinking 2-3x more water than usual. My vet says the next step would either be an X-ray ($75) or an ultrasound ($500). I'm not sure what's the best next step? Cute pup photo here. [more inside]
Hi. I'm losing my home and I need to rehome my adult german shepherd. Thankfully a friend in Omaha offered to take her. Does anyone know of any rescue organizations or people that might be willing to transport her from Utah or Colorado to there, preferably for $300 or less?
Me previously and previously. Sadly, the surgery wasn't successful-- the cancer returned, and I'm saying my goodbyes this week. Yesterday I was asked if I could adopt two bonded senior dogs. Obviously, I can't for the foreseeable future, but now I'm thinking about possibly getting a dog as a next pet. Looking for opinions or relevant experience. [more inside]
Is there any way that a non-dog-owner could get some dog therapy in NYC, ASAP? [more inside]
My new guy does not like dogs the same way I do. Mainly he believes large dogs should be outside at all times because then if they poop he doesn't have to clean up large poop. He states he's a dog lover. [more inside]
We're 99% sure we're bringing home a new dog tonight, to be a companion to our beloved dog already in residence. Following Metafilter regulations, pictures of current dog, Birdie, and new dog are here. [more inside]
Our 7 year old dachshund-beagle mix has decided that her nightly crate sleep should be interrupted by a half-hour of whining and complaining and scratching to get out of her crate. Last night this occurred at midnight, then again at 4:30 AM. This has been a nightly thing for the past two weeks or so. [more inside]
I saw Heart of a Dog, Laurie Anderson's new film last weekend. I'm pretty big fan of hers and ... meh. The film did have it's moments though ... [more inside]
My wife and I are interested in getting a dog. We sort of thought of it as something we'd ease into, especially since we had heard that adoption can take a little bit of time. We stopped by a nearby animal rescue this weekend just to see what was involved, and met a very sweet, gentle 7-year-old pugle. We were very surprised to be told that the rescue does same-day adoption, and we could potentially take her home that day. I balked a little bit because our apartment isn't really set up for a dog, but we're both first time dog owners, so don't really know what that even means. [more inside]
A neighbor's dog completely and utterly flips out whenever my dog and I come within 200 ft of it. I'm worried about my dog's safety but I'm not sure what to do/say. [more inside]
Hi! I'm MMDP! You may remember me from posts such as this one! Well, we took the advice, and waited, and looked ... [more inside]
I take my great dane everywhere except for the grocery store. I left her in the car for ten minutes tops, came back to a mean note citing animal abuse. What should I do? [more inside]
A few years ago we adopted an older dog. She's now an elderly dog. She has a kidney condition that makes her drink massive amounts of water, and she goes through periods where she'll pee in the house. [more inside]
I adopted a sweet 11yo black lab on Halloween. He's obviously still settling into home life after spending two months at the animal shelter, but in general things are going great. This was his first week with his midday dog walker, and I'm not feeling super pleased with the dog walker's services. Help me figure out if I'm right to be worried or I'm being an anxious, over-protective new (dog) Momma. [more inside]
Almost all of the dogs I have ever known (including our new rescue, Mia) have made huffing, blowing or sort of chewing noises when they are feeling a bit soppy or are being petted or cuddled intensively. I'm curious as to why there's no word for this - does anyone have any theories? Is it not as widespread as I think it is? If you have a word for this yourself then bone-us points for sharing your coinage here.
My dog was diagnosed via fine needle aspiration with a mast cell tumor. It is on his left lateral flank. We are scheduled to have it removed and biopsied tomorrow. However, this is our regular vet. Should we halt this and consult an oncologist or specialist first? Or should we proceed and wait till we get the results of the biopsy?
We are probably going to be getting a dog in the next short while. I have seen this question. In terms of an update, or the most current thinking on how to keep a dog happy, manage behaviours brought on / out by being stressed in a shelter, and tips and tricks on bonding, where should we be looking / what should we be reading? [more inside]
My five year old labrador dog seems to be in pain. It's nearly 11pm. The local vet clinic is closed. Ought I wait until morning or call the vets’ emergency number? Details inside. [more inside]
About half an hour ago I saw my dog lounging in the liner of my guitar case, and I thought, aw, how cute. Then I saw that she had been chewing, and swallowing small amounts of my Herco HE360 guitar humidifier. [more inside]
Just as the title says, the last 3 days I've come home to a new, smelly brown paint job on my wall. No new diet, no new anything, just simply - she's started sharting. I've watched her go in the morning today but still, new paint job after work. What could be causing this? [more inside]
If she gets along well with our current pups, Mr. Fig and I will be adopting a 10-yr old very small chihuahua with no teeth. I'm good with what to feed her, but not so good on treats/extras. Do any Mefites own toothless pups, and/or have advice? [more inside]
A lady-dog, that is. I went to a rescue yesterday, fully anticipating that I would bring back a male dog and name him Suetonius (Sue, for short, making him a boy named Sue). But I fell in love with a striking female. Help! [more inside]
We're headed on a family vacation next week that will take us down the east coast from Connecticut to Florida and back. The trip will last about 14 days and we'll be in a Mazda5 (micro minivan with a 3rd row) with 2 adults, 2 kids (8 & 10) and our adult rescue dog, Henry. We've never traveled with a dog before and so are looking for suggestions on how to make this process go as smoothly as possible. [more inside]
A rough fourth of July (and 3rd, and 5th) for my dog here in Sacramento. We want to avoid the five solid hours of booming and whistling next year by getting out of town. Can you recommend a California town or county that bans fireworks and enforces that ban? [more inside]
ASKING FOR A FRIEND: She is trying to remember the name of an old picture book that was about an invisible dog. We think it was originally published in the 30s, then re-released in the 90s at Costco as part of a set of three picture books, one of which was about a lion. [more inside]
One of my dogs has suddenly developed some vision issues, and is having some trouble adjusting. It's breaking my heart to see her bump into things and become disoriented. Have any mefites gone through a transition like this? What are your tips/tricks to becoming a seeing-eye human? [more inside]
How can I make my dog with kennel cough more comfortable as she recovers? [more inside]
My in-law's dog licking up crumbs from my 18-month old daughter's car seat. My daughter toddled over and the dog turned his head sharply and she got a cut under her eye from the dog's tooth. I always thought any action with a dog's mouth was considered a bite but my MIL corrected me and told the urgent care doctor it is a scratch from a tooth. Which was it? Is she trying to protect her dog? I'm confused. [more inside]
Tesla, our brindle plott hound mix is very clever and has separation anxiety. I'd like a dog tracking gizmo so I can stop worrying that I'll get dog-has-escaped messages from my awesome neighbors. Recommend me a dog tracker? [more inside]
I have a wonderful eleven year old Westie. He's physically very healthy. He was just tested for Cushing's and cancer, both were negative. The only symptom he shows during the day is going out the dog door and then forgetting the dog door is there when he wants in. Bedtime is bad, and the accommodation we've been using failed tonight. Can you help me with ways to get him to bed safely? [more inside]
Unfortunately all the resources online are around keeping dogs at "breed standards" which isn't really our jam. She was full grown when we got her but her ears are completely different now! Why is this? [more inside]
That's it really. I live near a large, park-like cemetery and I'm wondering about the etiquette of walking my dog there. It's a modern, suburban cemetery which is quite, um, active. If I were to take my dog there, he would be leashed at all times and if I saw a funeral actually occurring I would keep far away. Would if be upsetting if a person was at the cemetery to visit the grave of a loved one and they saw me casually walking the dog as if it were any other place?
My dream for some time now has been to get a dog. I have a full time job. I'm scared the dog would hate his/her life. [more inside]
We just adopted this 8 month old female Pekingese from a shelter in the midwest. We started out working through Buffy-verse names, and got excited about Fred, which we long-formed first to Winifred, then decided that sounded like a middle name and tried to think of a very generic first name, like Lady. We ended up with Lady Winifred and we call her Fred, but the grandparents object, and we're open to choosing something different, since we chose it before meeting her. [more inside]
Adult dog strained a lot and often trying to poop yesterday, and hasn't had a big poop in 30 hours - but he has managed a bit of poop recently and is behaviorally fine. When is vet time? Lots of poop within. [more inside]
I would like to set up a doggie cam to keep an eye on my pooch while I'm in the office and I need some suggestions! [more inside]
The mister and I are moving into a new apartment! Hooray! The one problem? A dog crate that both fits our new apartment's aesthetic and isn't $1200. [more inside]
I need a bar or restaurant for a small group on Sunday. One of our group however, is my puppy. Another requirement is that it is near the N train, or a quick transfer from the N train on this Sunday (are they still randomly shutting down the 7 train over the weekend?). Beyond that, it's not too picky. I know about the Bohemian Beer Garden, but I am not sure that they allow pets. Sidewalk cafes, anything outdoors should be great.
My sweet pup learned to scavenge to survive as a stray in a rural area with her mom. Now she's up to her ears in kibble and tasty treats, but the allure of dead animals, chicken bones, live bees, and bird poop beats everything out...not to mention the nectar that is dirty pond water! I'm doing the obvious, but have any of you successfully untrained fervent, compulsive scavenging behavior? Tips to share? [more inside]
I had a bag of chewy black licorice sticks, and my mom's dog (a bichon frise) got into it. Not sure how much the little feller ate, maybe 5-8 sticks max before I stopped him. Will he get sick? Googling delivers different results (safe in moderation, OMG poison), so I thought I'd bring it to you folk. He's on a steroidal medication for some kind of itchy skin condition, but I think that's it.
Help me train my dog not to bark at other dogs while we’re walking. [more inside]
Can you help identify the artist behind this painting?
~1 year old Labradoodle name of Twist. Good boy. Crate trained up to this point, house trained so long as we lock him in his crate overnight. Which is the issue. I'd like to start weaning him off of the crate. He seems ready, he has no trouble holding it all night in the crate and it's not like he's rushing for the door in the morning; he'll happily romp around the house while we're getting breakfast etc together. But when I've tried leaving the crate door open overnight he, well, chooses not to wait until morning. Looking for strategies to let him know that that's not okay. [more inside]
I've adopted a dog from a local shelter, and I may have made a terrible mistake. I'm seriously thinking of returning her, but I've had her less than half a day. See details inside. [more inside]
