I used to live with my dog and (now) ex-boyfriend. I moved out. Dog now lives with him. I live in apartment that doesn't allow dogs. Ex is abusive to dog. She can't stay with me, she can't stay with him, even though he wants to keep her. If I find her a new home, she'll be safe, but I won't get to see her again and my ex might retaliate against me. If I leave her there, I'll get to see her more often, but my ex could flip out and hurt her. I'm not sure how to do what I need to do. [more inside]

How do I best socialize my dog with other dogs while we're on our daily walks given that 90% of the dogs we encounter are fenced-in and/or tethered? When a fenced-in dog sees my dog and starts running around and barking, what does it mean and how should I respond? [more inside]

We just got an adorable new puppy. We're ecstatic! The dog, however, seems less enthused... for the past two days, he has done almost nothing but sleep. He has yet to eat anything, and he has no desire to explore our apartment or walk outside. Why is this, and what can we do to help him adjust? [more inside]

I have a Shih Tzu puppy who is 10 weeks old. An elderly lady I know has an adult Shih Tzu (3 years old) that she is going to have part with due to her and her husband's failing health. She offered to give me the dog. Both dogs are females. Would the two dogs get along? Are there any major concerns I should have? I need to try to make a decision within the next couple of days. Thanks!

I rescued my pup from a local animal shelter Monday and I have a few questions I was hoping someone with some puppy experience could answer for me. She seems to be a lab/pit bull mix and the shelter estimated her age at about 4 months. The vet that spayed her says she is probably closer to a year, but her small size (malnourished at 25lbs) and the small size of her teeth make me think she might be closer to 4 months (the vet the shelter was using seems to be a moron, I'll never take my pup there again). DogFilter : My SO and I are looking at getting a dog, probably a puppy, probabably something with Havanese in it. That's all besides the point. The big question is how do I know if the backyard breeder is a GOOD breeder. Takes care of the pups, gives them plenty of socialization, isn't a puppy mill, etc?

PS Ideally, we keep checking the dog shelter for a smallish dog that would fit into our lifestyles, but worse comes to worse, we'll have to get the pup from somewhere (purebreed, cross, dont' matter, cost matters a bit).

Canine flea/tick preventative treatment? I have a rough and tumble pup (18 pounds, 18 months old). He's quite an outdoor companion, and I find ourselves walking more wooded trails this year. I expect fleas, and especially ticks, are going to be a concern this summer. I am staying completely away from Hartz in all shapes and forms. I am very open to the idea of natural/herbal/homeopathic flea and tick preventatives as long as they work well. I am also interested if anyone has any experiences with Frontline or Advantage. Whatever the treatment, it would have to withstand bathing, as he is groomed professionally once a month and usually is rinsed down or bathed at home once a week (depending on how much mud he gets into). I will consult with the vet before going ahead with anything, obviously, but would really appreciate any of your personal feedback.
