Careers in communications / social justice

I'm going back to school for communications in the fall. I'd like to start gathering career ideas now so I know what to look for when I graduate and also so that I pick the right courses for my career path. When I went in to my undergrad in 2007, I had no idea of what I would do upon graduation. So, I'd like to gather some ideas now and tailor my course selection towards potential career options. What should I read after watching the Up series?

I am an American who has just finished watching the Up series on Netflix, and I am wondering if there are any articles or books worth reading about the series. I would be interested in anything, but I'm particularly interested in anything that fleshes out the stories of these people's lives and also anything concerning how the series changed the lives of those portrayed (are they celebrities in the UK? etc.)

Rock Out With Your Doc Out

If you guys were my real friends, you would have told me about Heavy Metal Parking Lot before now. Back in the day, I used to hear about great documentary films through the grapevine. I guess the best example of this is the Evening with Kevin Smith series. But I never seem to hear about these any more. Heavy Metal Parking Lot looks awesome. What else am I missing? Parameter: nothing really sad. Hands on a Hard Body was kind of a bummer to me, but it's still the sort of thing I'm looking for. Anything about, say, the Holocaust, is out of this league. Thanks, MeFites!

We (the royal we) have been watching Wild China recently. It's a 6 part nature documentary that's also a bit of a travelogue. Documentary on Time

I am looking for the title of a documentary on the concept of time that I think was produced for the Discovery Channel in the mid 90s. It was rather bland, but I still want to see it again. It wasn't about time travel or anything flashy, it was just about the concept of time. Can anyone point help me out with a title or a place where I can purchase it?

Looking for a documentary on African military ritual strangeness...

Heard about this documentary from an anthropology student, but she didn't know the name of it... Back in the colonial days (20th C) of African holdings, some European military would depart their bases yearly and allow the African soldiers to take over. The African soldiers would dress as the Europeans and re-enact their modes of life and work, but in some kind of ritualized parody. [more inside]

Identify a recent Radio 4 documentary

I'm trying to identify a BBC Radio 4 documentary I heard within the last week or two. It was about a French woman who creates experiences to communicate science and technology ideas. It ended with a friend of hers at NASA reading a recommendation letter to support her application to become an astronaut. [more inside]

Still and meditative HD films of the rainforest?

I love the NRK's Bergensbanen film - a contemplative, hours-long view of snowy Norwegian railway routes. It's perfect as a kind of gorgeous video wallpaper. I'm looking for something similar but from warmer climates - jungle, rainforest, etc. Not even trains, per se - it could just be stationary, HD tripod footage from the deep jungle. Most nature documentaries are too full of cuts and story: I just want something still and beautiful, but full of greenery and birds. Any ideas?

BBC Documentary Earworm

I've heard this audio track on many BBC documentaries over the past few months, including multiple unconnected Panorama episodes and most recently on Britain's Favourite Supermarket Foods. It seems an audio engineer is crushing on this track quite heavily, and now my brain is demanding to hear the whole thing and will replay it for me ad nauseam until it does. I've tried running it through SoundHound and Shazam to no avail, so I figure it might be from a production audio library instead of an actual song. Does anyone know the title and composer of this piece, and more to the point, where I might obtain a copy?

Help me find this documentary about a kindly abortion doctor!

Maybe ten years ago at a Green Festival in SF my mom and I saw a documentary about a small town doctor, probably in upstate New York or some other part of New England, who gave safe abortions to women even though they were illegal, starting in at least the 1950s. My mom thinks the title was "Thank You, Doctor ------", but can't remember the name. This is bugging her, as she actually had an abortion with him back then. He saved hundreds of lives, but of course when I google search I end up with lots of anti-abortion propaganda. Can someone more skilled with searching help us out? It was a very small production. Thanks!

help me ID a documentary about a small town technology clash

I'm trying to find a documentary I watched sometime in the 90's, perhaps on HBO but at least on cable. It was set in a small town (New England?) where a burgeoning computer/IT company had just settled a large number of employees. the town's main industry previously had been a paper mill (or some similar industry) that hadn't been doing well, and coincidentally went out of business as the IT folks moved in. Does the filmmaker need us to sign a release?

For several years in the past I worked closely with someone who was well known, and very well regarded, in his industry. At the time, a relative of his would occasionally show up at the workplace to shoot film and video. Mostly of the well known person, but since it was at work, and we worked closely, I know that I am in a great deal of this footage. As this person's relative is a filmmaker, my assumption has always been that some sort of film would surface. Recently I have heard that the filmmaker is, in fact, pulling footage together for some sort of documentary film. I have not heard from the filmmaker, but would not be surprised if he contacted me. I am very uneasy about that possibility because I have, over the years, become extremely distrustful of the filmmaker. I know that the filmmaker could edit the film anyway he wishes, but if he wanted to include me (and several others) does he need us to sign some sort of a release?

Documentary about a man representing himself in a lawsuit?

A friend of mine is trying to remember the name of a documentary they once saw and Google has failed them. I'm forever touting the skill and speed with which the AskMe community solves dilemmas like these, so don't fail me now! Here's what she asked me: I saw a documentary about a man who was representing himself in a lawsuit or series of lawsuits -- I think the government had filed them against him for sending threatening letters. Something about defending his land and eminent domain... He had a wife that he met in a foreign country. She was a lot younger than him and she moved to the US and married him. They were both chain smokers and used a plastic fork as a cigarette holder. They lived in a trailer that was a mess and full of document boxes of his "research" for his case. And they had a few big dogs.

My kickstarter successfully funded in 15 days! Now what?

The kickstarter I launched for the documentary I've been shooting over the last 18 months got funded in 15 days. We've got 20 days left to go on the campaign. It's a big project but kickstarter is only part of our fundraising plan so the goal was rather modest. I would certainly like to secure more pledges. What techniques can I use to make the most of this time? The project got funded quickly because of the efforts of the tight-knit community in which I live and the subject matter I'd like to think. How can I bring in more funds having already met the goal? Metafilter is curating the project. Almost all of our marketing has been through Facebook. Any ideas? Google searches lead to plenty of blog articles on launching but not much information specific to this situation. We're funding post-production and film festival entries.

Planet Earth-esque documentaries focusing on cities, etc.?

I love Planet Earth, Life, and other documentaries that David Attenborough is associated with -- as much for the educational value as for the beautiful cinematography and show-not-tell approach. They're works of art in and of themselves. Are there any documentaries in a similar vein that focus on cities, architecture, landmarks, and other human creations?
