It's Always Sunny in L.A. (Dermatologist needed and more LA questions!)

So we moved to Los Angeles four days ago (in what I think is Mid-Wilshire-- the closest landmarks are the tar pits and the Grove) and while I've been eagerly reading past archives of LA lifehacks and tips, I could use some further advice. [more inside]

Would you pay an extra $1K/yr to be able to choose your own doctors?

How much is it worth to you to have (relative) freedom of choice? Enrolling in health insurance and I'm debating between an HMO and a PPO (both under Blue Shield of CA). The difference in cost is roughly $1,000. I'm a 26 year old female but I'm not exactly "healthy". I have mysterious, debilitating, chronic joint pain all over (undiagnosed as of yet), a couple car accident-related injuries that flare up every now and then, and I need to get a pap smear every 3 months due to a recent scare. So acupuncturists, chiropractors, internists, rheumatologists, and gynecologists must all be within easy reach for me. [more inside]

Help me help my very pregnant sister through a tough situation! (DC/MD)

My sister is 33 weeks pregnant. She's miserable and what's worse, she's recently moved from Florida (where her husband was completing school) back home to Maryland. As such, she's lost her doctor. She's pretty much a mess, and I am hoping to figure out a way to help her. Particulars inside... [more inside]

Anyone else experience similar chronic illness symptoms?

Note: I am the patient. Describing the symptoms is pretty difficult task but I will try to do my best. The patient has not felt normal since sometime in October of 2013. The best way to describe it is a feeling as if patient is about to get sick. That feeling as if a sickness is coming on but never really comes on. This feeling is often strongest at night and continues throughout the day and will be gone by night. This toxic/sick feeling that radiates throughout the body seems to come and go at times. Is my neurologist incompetent, lazy or reasonable?

My Doctor wants me back on MS modifying medications. To avoid going back on the self-injecting MS medications I am trying the new pill forms. These medications all have side effects that sometimes go away or lessen over time. I am willing to soldier through this period with help. The prescribing Doctor does not want to deal with the side effects. [more inside]

Do doctors actually tell their patients they "cannot have children"?

In my life I've heard a number of stories from women who claim to have been told they could not have children... who then proceed to have children without intervention. Sometimes, this is an extremely welcome development, other times, very much the opposite. Saying something like "you will not be able to have children" with such certainty seems like an extremely irresponsible thing for a medical professional to say to a patient and so I have a bit of a hard time believing that doctors say it, at least in any case where it is at least physically possible for someone to conceive. What's the process for a doctor specializing in multiple fields?

If a doctor goes to school for, say, pathology, but later wants to also practice family medicine or cardiology, what's the process for them being able to do those things? Do they have to go back to school or just pass board certifications? I realize this may not be standard, but let's say that someone had the funds and drive to do it; what would be required to make it happen?

I want to go back to school for Medicine. I'm 35.

I can't find a job in my industry now for four months, which has pushed me to limits of madness. I am kind of tired of my chosen industry, and I have been considering going back to school to utilize my skills as a Lighting expert to get a degree in Optometry. I have a wife who can work, but her training is Canadian and her monthly tops off at around $1500. Is it possible to go back to school for 4 years and live as a 35 year old? Where should I start? Dermatologist's office in NYC

Are there any dermatologist offices open late evenings or weekends in NYC? I'm just busy working till 6 in the city on the weekdays so that's why I'm asking. Either weekends or later in the evening on weekdays. It's mostly for my acne which has gotten out of hand even though I've tried lots of things to get rid of it.

Divorcing my doctor: how to proceed without being That Patient

My GP's practice has over the last four or five months has just not been filling my needs. That's the nice way of putting it, and I would like to keep it at that without flinging about claims of negligence. So I want to get away from them, but I have a serious ongoing medical problem that won't allow, say, a two-month wait between one doctor's appointment and another. So I need to have some dealings with them. YANMD, but if you are a doctor, which would be preferable: a patient saying, give me a referral, I'm out of here, or, your practice did or did not do x, y, z, please do these things properly and give me a referral to a specialist. Is a concierge doctor worth it?

I've been very disappointed with my doctor--she's obviously rushed and makes simple mistakes (like writing me a prescription for an over-the-counter medicine, telling me I need bloodwork but then not testing for the things she said she was going to, etc). I've also felt on several occasions that she didn't really listen to what I was saying to her. I'm thinking of joining this concierge medical center but I wanted to hear other people's experiences with this form of health care first. [more inside]

Ok, so my gf has some sort of thyroid condition? Shes on a lot of natural hormone (like 18 mg a day? 3 pills, I think) and her TSH is low. She says, and I believe her, that the high thyroid is what keeps her functioning, awake, etc. However, doctors seem to find the low TSH alarming and want to lower the thyroid dose. Seeking clinic and urgent care recommendations in southern Baltimore suburbs

Just moved to Baltimore (working in Columbia), haven't had time to unpack let alone find a new PCP, and wouldn't you know it, i'm sick. Does anyone have any recommendations for a drop-in clinic or urgent care facility in the Laurel-Ellicott City-Columbia area that (a) won't charge ER rates and (b) has decent staff? I found several when I googled, but have no way to evaluate them other than google recommendations. Bonus points if you can ALSO recommend other good practitioners (I need a primary care physician, an endocrinologist and a dermatologist) in that area or the south side of Baltimore for when I have time to set up appointments for initial visits.

Can someone recommend some reliable web sites where I can check reviews for Doctor's in my Area (NJ)? I know there are a ton of sites but I don’t know which ones are reliable I live in NJ Also somebody recommended yelp in one of the other posts here but a quick search there did not reveal any result with more than 1 review for my area. Also, there were only few practices with reviews. Basically I just want to find out a little bit more about the doctor before I visit him / her. Any suggestions?

What recourse, if any, do I have in dealing with this equipment charge from my podiatrist?

About six weeks ago I went to a podiatrist for heel pain and was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. I was given instructions for treatment along with a night splint that I've been wearing every night. Today, I received a bill from the podiatrist's office for the splint: Blue Cross has paid $80 of the $280 (!) charge, and the podiatrist's office is now putting me on the hook for the $200 balance.
