I've have boycotted getting on scales for a while now. However, I hate going to the doctor because I hate getting on a scale. This started when I was a child (I'm female) and has gotten worse throughout the years. For the past couple years, I've boycotted seeing the doctor, but I can't do that forever. What should I do? I'm a pretty healthy, female, late twenties. No major health concerns, but I do need to see a doctor again. But nonetheless, I am literally phobic of getting a scale. More inside. [more inside]

Doctor-Filter: I have an appointment scheduled to see a doctor this afternoon about some... sensitive issues. I'm wondering how free I should be with the information I give them, and whether or not certain factors might discourage them from giving me the treatment I feel like I need. [more inside]

When, if ever, is it reasonable to ask for a preemptive test? Given a family history of congestive heart failure I'm wondering how reasonable it is to reguest a MUGA or echocardiogram just to allay (or confirm) my own worries. I'm definitely already going to see a doctor, so I'm not asking for medical advice. I guess I am asking for perspective to help me frame my request with my physician. [more inside]

I'm confused by my GP's bedside manner. I went to see Dr. B today about my sciatic pain after my physio recommended it. She assessed me and referred me for an xray, which is fine. After that, when I asked about relieving the pain of muscle spasms in my leg, she said "I have something that would work perfectly..." and "I'd be happy to give you a note so you can stay home from work..." She seemed to be either thinking aloud, or waiting for me to respond. In the end I walked away with neither. What's going on? [more inside]

I'm generally a pretty nervous person. Lately (over the last two months), it's become worse. I jump whenever someone enters the room. I'm quite stressed about everyday things (a disagreement, a social event, my future), and nearly every day my stomach or chest or shoulders ache from these worries. I recognise that my response to this is overblown and irrational, and that maybe I need to seek medical attention. But that's the problem. Can you help me gather the courage to see a doctor? I'm a doctor in private practice. I love to blog, just not about medicine. I like to do more personal writing, post photos and links, creative projects, write about recent trips, my city, etc (i.e. nothing political, offensive).

I went to a new doctor on a recommendation from a friend to get Implemnon (sp?). The ob-gyn performed a pap smear (it's been a year since my last one). At the end of it, he stuck his finger in my ass -- he was feeling my belly at the same time. Why did he do it?

What would be the ethical issues surrounding dating one's optometrist? I realize that dating one's doctor would be against their professional practice codes but an optometrist seems like a less clear case. The O.D. Ethics guide does not address the question at all. I can't easily change optometrists as I live in a small city and she is the only one qualified to fit lenses for my rare corneal disease - I need new lenses every six months or so.
